The family is listed on the 1870 census of 4th Ward Erie City, Erie Co., PA. They are listed in an 1871-1872 City Directory for Erie, PA, but there daughter Gertrude Harriet was born in Chicago, IL in September 1872. They moved to Michigan sometime before 1875, and Francis Edwin is listed on a Civil War pension document that year as living in Grand Rapids, Kent Co., MI. Francis Edwin is listed by himself on the 1880 census of Ludington, Mason Co., MI; at that time he was working for the railroad. The same year Jennie & the children are listed on the census of Meadville, Crawford Co., PA. Jennie divorced Francis Edwin on June 03, 1886 in Grand Rapids, Kent Co., MI. The record shows that he admitted to several acts of cruelty and non-support and was unsuitable to have care, custody and education of the minor child, Gertie Thorne. It was ruled that Gertie remain with her mother till she attained the age of 14. Francis Edwin remarried in January 1887. Jennie died on March 22, 1887 in Sadsbury Twp., Crawford Co., PA. She is buried in the Watson Run Cemetery, Crawford Co., PA.

The family was in Chicago, IL in 1872, but his parents had marital difficulties and Frank Edwin is living with his mother & siblings on the 1880 census of Meadville, Crawford Co., PA while his father was working for the rairoad in Ludington, Mason Co., MI. His parents divorced in 1886, and Frank Edwin went to live with his father in Grand Rapids, Kent Co., MI. Frank Edwin was working in his father's store in 1887 in Grand Rapids, but his occupation on his marriage record in 1888 is listed as Carpenter. He married Eveline Ingersoll on February 07, 1888 in Grand Rapids, Kent Co, MI. Eveline was the sister of Frank Edwin's stepmother, Lulu Carrie Ingersoll. Edwina died some time between 1888 to 1900. Frank is listed as widowed in the household of his father on the 1900 census of Jocko Twp., Missoula Co., MT; his occupation is listed as Carpenter. He is listed on the 1910 census of State Line, Kootenai Co., Idaho, living next door to the household of his married sister Gertrude ( & Samuel) Webb. At that time his occupation was listed as Saw Mill. have not found Frank on the 1920 census at this time. At some time before 1930 he remarried Emma. They are listed on the 1930 census Annapolis, Kitsap Co., WA. I do not know of any children for Frank Edwin from either of his marriages. Frank Edwin Thorne died June 27, 1945 in Retsil, Kitsap Co., WA.

2. Ruth ThorneFlorence Ruth Thorne was born April 30, 1869 in Sadsbury, Crawford Co., PA. She is listed at age 1 with her parents on the 1870 census of 4th Ward Erie City, Erie Co., PA. The family was in Chicago, IL in 1872, but her parents had marital difficulties and Ruth is living with her mother & siblings on the 1880 census of Meadville, Crawford Co., PA while her father was working for the rairoad in Ludington, Mason Co., MI. Her parents divorced in 1886, and Ruth remained with her mother. In a letter written March 1, 1979 from Florence St. John, a daughter of Ruth. Florence states that her mother would not have anything to do with her father Frances Edwin. She remembers hearing her mother say "No, he shall never come here" when she was not suppose to hear it. She also wrote in the same letter that her mother went to live with Charlie Magill. He was Ruth's grandfather. At some time between 1880 to 1895 Ruth went from Pennsylvania to Ohio. Ruth married Winfield Scott Stearns in 1895 in Randolph, Wood Co., OH, and they had 3 children. The family is listed on the 1900 census of Liberty Twp., Wood Co., OH. I have not found them on the 1910 census at this time, but the family returned from Ohio to Pennsylvania sometime before 1920. They are listed on the 1920 census of Meadville, Crawford Co., PA. At that time Winfield's occupation was listed as Railroad Engineer. Florence Ruth Thorne Stearns died on September 25, 1925 in Meadville, Crawford Co., PA. Winfield died on April 6, 1937. They are both buried in the Greendale cemetery, Meadville, Crawford Co., PA Children of Winfield Scott Stearns & Florence Ruth Thorne are Aline (1897), Florence Ruth (1900) & Arthur (1903).

The family is listed on the 1920 census of Ashland Twp., Clarion Co., PA. Samuel Webb died on February 27, 1923 in Ashland Twp., Clarion Co., PA. He was killed in an accident involving a tractor. Gertrude remarried Samuel P. Beck in 1926. They are listed on the 1930 census of Shippenville, Clarion Co., PA with 3 of Gertrude's sons from her first marriage also living in the household. Gertrude Harriet "Gertie" Thorne Webb Beck died February 21, 1940 in Shippenville, Clarion Co., PA. Children of Samuel Webb & Gertie Thorne are Walter (1900), Paul (1901), Robert (1907), Francis (1909), Joseph (1911) & Edwin (1913).

Francis Edwin Thorn married Lulu Carrie Ingersoll on January 01, 1887 in Grand Rapids, Kent Co., MI. They had 8 children. Based on the birthplaces of their children the family was in Michigan in 1887 & 1898, but moved to Washington by 1892 when they were listed on the state census in Douglas Co., WA. They moved from Washington to Montana about 1899, and they are listed on the 1900 census of Jocko Twp., Missoula Co., MT. They returned from Montana to Washington about 1901. They had a daughter born in Washington on Feb. 21, 1902, and they are listed on records in 1905 & 1906 in Spokane & Spokane Bridge, WA. They moved to Chewelah, Stevens Co., WA by 1908. Their son Robert was born on September 10, 1909 in Chewelah, WA, but later that same year their house in Chewelah burned. The family is listed on the 1910 census of Allen Pct, 1st Ward Spokane, Spokane Co., WA, which was taken April 16, 1910. They moved to Spirit Lake, Kootenai Co., Idaho about 1911 and they homesteaded there until at least 1917. Their daughter Carrie states that the photo at left was the only photo she had of her parents. Carrie thinks Francis Edwin was in his 60's and it was probably taken at their homestead in Idaho. In 1918 Francis went to live at the Old Soldier's Home (Washington Veteran's Home) in Kitsap Co., WA. He is listed at age 76 on the 1920 census Retsil Postoffice, Veteran's Precinct #1, as an inmate in the Washington Veteran's Home. Lulu is listed with her married daughter Mabel and her two youngest children on the 1920 census of Blaine Precinct, Spokane, Spokane Co., WA. She is listed as "widowed" that year for some reason, although Francis was still alive, and her occupation is given as Nurse. Francis is listed at age 87 on the 1930 census of the Veteran's home, Retsil, Kitsap Co., WA, and Lulu is also listed as living there with her occupation listed as Nurse. Francis Edwin Thorne died on May 25, 1930 in Retsil, Kitsap Co., WA. He is buried at the Washington Veteran's Home, Kitsap Co., WA. Lulu Carrie Ingersoll Thorne died on March 11, 1941 in Seattle, King Co., WA.

4. Fred ThorneFrederick Lawrence Thorne was born October 25, 1887 in Grand Rapids, MI. He moved with his parents from Michigan to Washington sometime between 1889-1892, and he is listed with his parents at age 4 on the Douglas Co., WA state census. He moved with his parents from Washington Montana about 1899, and Fred is listed at age 12 with his parents on the 1900 census of Jocko Twp., Missoula Co., MT. The family returned from Montana to Washington about 1901, and they are listed on records in 1905 & 1906 in Spokane & Spokane Bridge, WA. The family moved to Chewelah, Stevens co., WA by 1908. His parents had a son born on September 10, 1909 in Chewelah, WA, but later that same year their house in Chewelah burned. The family is listed on the 1910 census of Allen Pct, 1st Ward Spokane, Spokane Co., WA, which was taken April 16, 1910, but Frederick is not listed with them and I have not found him on the 1910 census at this time. (He would have been about age 22). His parents moved to Spirit Lake, Kootenai Co., Idaho about 1911 and they homesteaded there until at least 1917. Fred married Lottie Hubbard about 1911, probably in Idaho, and they had 7 children. Based on birthplaces of their children the family was in Idaho in 1912, but had moved to Washington by 1916. They had a child born in King Co., WA in 1916 and are listed in the Seattle City Directory for that year. When Fred filled out his WWI Draft card on June 5, 1917, the family was living in Bremerton, Washington, and Fred was working in the Navy Yard at Puget Sound. At that time he was age 29, tall, with slender build, grey eyes & light brown hair. They are at the same address as Fred's brother Charles, who was single & unemployed at that time. Fred claimed exemption to the draft due to working at the Navy yard, and having to support a wife and 2 children under age 5. The family is listed in the 1918 Seattle Directory, and they also had a child born in Seattle, King Co., WA in 1918. They are listed in Seattle in 1919 on Civil War pension papers and are also listed there on the 1920 census. They are listed in pension papers as living in Charleston, Kitsap Co., WA on January 5, 1921. Based on birth places of their children they lived Washington through 1926. Lottie is listed as head of household with the children and her mother on the 1930 census of Bingen, Klickitat Co., WA. She is listed as "married" but Fred is not listed in the household at that time. Fred Thorne of Seattle Washington is listed as a survivor on the June 30, 1945 funeral records of his half-brother Frank Thorne. Frederick Lawrence Thorne died sometime after 1945, but I don't know when or where. Lottie Hubbard Thorne died on March 14, 1968 in Spokane City, WA. Children of Fred Thorne & Lottie Hubbard are Eleanor (1912), Frank (1916), Fred (1918), Charlotte (1921), Ray (1922), Virginia (1925) & William (1926).

Her parents had a son born on September 10, 1909 in Chewelah, WA, but later that same year their house in Chewelah burned. Mary married James Kennedy about 1909, and they are listed with her parents on the 1910 census of Allen Pct, 1st Ward Spokane, Spokane Co., WA, which was taken April 16, 1910. At that time Mary was age 19, and the census indicates they had been married 1 year and had no children. Mary's parents moved to Spirit Lake, Kootenai Co., Idaho about 1911. Mary & James separated and/or divorced sometime between 1910 to 1916. Mary married Thomas E. "Ned" Peckham on March 18, 1916 in Coeur D'Alene, Kootenai Co., ID. (Mary Edwina's brother Charles also married Ned's sister Hazel in 1918.) Ned & Mary had 2 daughters. They returned from Idaho to Washington soon after their marriage, and their first daughter was was born in October 1916 in Spokane Co., WA. They are listed on the 1918 City Directory of Seattle, King Co., WA. The family is listed on the 1920 census of Annapolis, Kitsap Co., WA; Mary's brother Charles & his wife are also living with them at that time and they are living near the households of Mary's married sisters Carrie & Grace. Ned died in an accident on October 24, 1923 in Shelton, Mason Co., WA - he was working as a brakeman for a logging railroad at the time of his death and possibly the accident was job-related. Mary is listed as widowed on the 1930 census of Annapolis, Kitsap Co., WA. Mary moved to Alaska sometime between 1930 to 1938 and also married Mr. Robertson. (This was possibly Loring Chapman Robertson, who died on May 22, 1934 in San Francisco, California.) When she applied for her Social Security number on April 29, 1938 she listed her name as Mary Edwina Thorne Robertson. At that time she was living in Cordova, Alaska and working at Gulf Packing Co. in Cordova, Alaska. She returned from Alaska to Washington sometime between 1838 to 1845. On June 30, 1945 she was listed as Mary Robertson of Seattle in the funeral home record of her half-brother Frank Edwin Thorn. Mary Edwina Thorne Peckham Robertson died in November 1963. Her last residence on the Social Security Death Index is listed as Washington. Ned & Mary are both buried at Shelton Memorial Park, Shelton, Mason Co., WA. Children of Ned Peckham & Mary Edwina Thorn are: Mary Fayetta (1916) & Alice (1921)

His parents moved from Montana to Washington about 1901, and they are listed on records in 1905 & 1906 in Spokane & Spokane Bridge, WA. The family moved to Chewelah, Stevens Co., WA by 1908. His parents had a son born on September 10, 1909 in Chewelah, WA, but later that same year their house in Chewelah burned. Charles is listed at age 16 with his parents on the 1910 census of Allen Pct, 1st Ward Spokane, Spokane Co., WA, which was taken April 16, 1910. His parents moved to Spirit Lake, Kootenai Co., Idaho about 1911 and homesteaded there until 1917. Charles filled out his WWI Draft card on June 5, 1917, and at that time he was age 23, single & unemployed. He was living in Bremerton, Kitsap Co., WA, at the same address as his older brother Fred. Charles was medium height, medium build with grey eyes & brown hair. In 1918, Charles' father went to live at the Old Soldier's Home (Washington Veterans Home) in Kitsap Co., WA. Charles had married Hazel Peckham in 1918. (Hazel's brother Ned married Charles' sister Mary Edwina in 1916.) Their marriage license is dated August 31, 1918 in King Co., WA, with instructions that the marriage had to occur within 3 months of that date At that time Charles is listed as being a resident of Retsil, WA, and Hazel is listed as a resident of Seattle, WA. They are listed on the 1920 census of Annapolis, Kitsap Co., WA, living in the household of Charles' married sister Mary and near the households of his married sisters Carrie & Grace. Charles & Hazel had 4 children. The family is listed on the 1930 census of Westside, Mason Co., WA. At that time Charles' occupation is listed as Truck Driving - Logging. Charles moved to Alaska sometime between 1830 to 1845. He is listed as Charles Thorne of Cordova, Alaska on the June 30, 1945 funeral records of his half-brother Frank Thorne. He returned from Alaska to Washington sometime between 1945-1955. Charles Monroe Thorne died on January 23, 1955 in Seattle, King, Washington. He is buried in Washington Memorial Park, SeaTac, King Co., Washington. There is another Charles M. Thorne who died at age 77 on May 25, 1979, at his home in Silverdale, Kitsap Co., Washington. His death was listed in the Bremerton Sun newspaper on May 27, 1979, and I'm not sure who he is. Children of Charles Thorne & Hazel Peckham are Hazel (1922), Charles (1924), Larry (1928) & Chester (1929).

Her parents had a son born on September 10, 1909 in Chewelah, WA, but later that same year their house in Chewelah burned. Mabel is listed at age 11 with her parents on the 1910 census of Allen Pct, 1st Ward Spokane, Spokane Co., WA, which was taken April 16, 1910. Her parents moved to Spirit Lake, Kootenai Co., Idaho about 1911 and homesteaded there until 1917. In 1918, Mabel's father went to live at the Old Soldier's Home (Washington Veterans Home) in Kitsap Co., WA. Mabel married John Williams Burton about 1917 and they had 5 children. They had a daughter born in Seattle, King Co., WA in 1918, and a son born in 1919 in Spokane City, WA. They are listed on the 1920 census of Spokane, Spokane Co., WA with several of John's siblings in the household, and near the households of Mabel's mother Lulu. Youngest son Ned was born in 1928 in Shelton, Mason Co., Washington. I have not found the family on the 1930 census at this time. John Williams Burton died on July 11, 1942 in Bremerton, Kitsap, Washington. Their son Jack was given the purple heart and reported missing in North Africa on October 24, 1943. On June 30, 1945 , Mabel Burton of Yelm, WA was listed as a surviving relative in the funeral home record of her half-brother Frank Edwin Thorn. Mabel married Mr. Weeks sometime between 1945 to 1952. Mabel Thorne Burton Weeks died July 13, 1952 in Tacoma, Pierce, Washington. She is buried in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Seattle, King, Washington. She is listed on the Washington Death index as Mabel J. Weeks, born abt 1899, died July 13,1952 in Alabama, Washington, but I have not been able to locate a county or city named Alabama in Washington.

Her parents had a son born on September 10, 1909 in Chewelah, WA, but later that same year their house in Chewelah burned. Grace married Frank Hubbard about 1919 and had 4 children. The family is listed on the 1920 census of Annapolis, Kitsap Co., WA, living near the households of Grace's married sisters Mary & Carrie. Grace & Frank divorced sometime between 1920 to 1930, and Grace is listed as divorced on the 1930 census Bremerton, Kitsap Co., WA. Grace married Mr. Darbyshire sometime between 1930 to 1945, probably in Washington. On June 30, 1945 she was listed in the funeral home record of her half-brother Frank Edwin Thorn as Grace Darbyshire of Everett, Washington. There is a Norris Darbyshire on the SSDI who was born in 1893 and issued his SSN in Washington who may be a possibility for Grace's second husband. Grace Darling Thorne Hubbard Darbyshire died on March 20, 1951 in King Co., Washington. She is buried in the Evergreen Washelli Memorial Park, Seattle, King, Washington under the name Grace Hubbard.

11. Robert Thorne

Robert Ingersoll Thorne was born September 10, 1909 in Chewelah, Stevens Co., WA. Later that same year his parent's house in Chewelah burned. Robert is listed at age 7 months with his parents on the 1910 census of Allen Pct, 1st Ward Spokane, Spokane Co., WA, which was taken April 16, 1910. His parents moved to Spirit Lake, Kootenai Co., Idaho about 1911 and homesteaded there until 1917. In 1918 Robert's father went to live at the Old Soldier's Home (Washington Veterans Home) in Kitsap Co., WA. Robert is listed at age 10 with his mother and sister Maude in the household of his married sister Mabel Burton on the 1920 census of Blaine District, Spokane, Spokane Co., WA. I have not found Robert on the 1930 census at this time. Robert moved to Alaska sometime before 1945. He is listed as Robert Thorne of Kodiak, Alaska in the June 30, 1945 funeral records of his half-brother Frank Thorne. Robert returned to Washington sometime between 1945 to 1979. Robert Ingersoll Thorne died October 1979 in Seattle, King Co., WA.
