Notes for Francis Edwin Thorn

The Families of Francis Edwin Thorn

Born 20 Oct. 1843 in Corning, Steuben Co., NY according to Civil War Records

1848 Lawrence & wife & 6 children among 1st families of Corning, NY

1850 census Painter Post, Steuben Co., NY - Lawrence Thorn (40), Hannah (37), George (14), William (12), Fayette (11), Sarah J. (8), Edward (6), Maryette (3), and Charles (1). Lawrence's occupation listed as Mason. Lawrence, Hannah & George listed born NJ, all others born NY.

1855 Census, Scio, Allegany Co., NY shows Lawrence Thorn age 35, Martha age 23 , George age 15, Fayette age 14, Jane age 13, Manult (think they mean Maryetta) age 7 and Edwin 2/12 b. Allegany Co. For the others they have birth place marked unknown, so I wonder if Martha might have given the information and being 2nd wife she would not know where step children were born. Where were William and Francis Edwin at this time?

June Webb Horner has in her possession the original letter from Jennie to Miss Gertie Thorne -

Alpine May 2 (no year given)
Dear Gertie I have been waiting to see what I will do is the reason I have not wrote to you before this you have heard that your Pa is here in Grand Rapids at least was there last wendsday I am still out here in the country and if it was not for you girls it would be hard to tell what would become of me I have been about sick but happen to be many friends I was in to Mrs. Branes a few days she is such a good little
woman I tell you she is a true friend it is very lonesome out here today I looked every day last week for a letter from Ruthie or you but did not get any
Oh gertie my poor heart is most broke then I think of you how hard it is to be seperated so but it wont be long I hope keep up good courage and do be a good girl, help Hattie all you can I sent you some music last week that Mrs. Hill gave me to send to you I will get that music someday when I think of it. I forgot when I was in
every thing is so nice the cherry trees are in blossom and Peach trees and I almost forgot to tell you a neighbor gave me a female bird and I put it with your Bird which is a bright yellow and they have four little birds they are a week old I think I will put her with the other singer when these get old enough to feed them selves write soon and dont forget your MaMa
NOTE - I typed the letter just as she wrote it. I have a feeling she wrote this just before the divorce which took place June 3, 1886. Since she only mentions "you girls" I feel that by this time Frank Edwin was probably with his father Edwin, although she does not mention him, just "your PA". If the letter was written in 1886 the Directory shows that Edwin & Frank E. were both living in Grand Rapids.

Jennie divorced Edwin Thorne. The record shows that he admitted to several acts of cruelty and non-support and was unsuitable to have care, custody and education of the minor child, Gertie Thorne. It was ruled that Gertie remain with her mother till she attained the age of 14.
