THE FAMILY OF PEDER ASLESON LUNDE & ELSE OLSDATTER GRAVLI
| Peder Aslesen Lunde & Else Olsdatter Gravli |
Peder Aslesen Lunde & Else Olsdatter Gravli were married in 1845 in
the Viker Church, Aadalen, Buskerud, Norway and they had two sons. Peder,
Else, and their 4 year old son Asle immigrated to America in 1850. According to
family stories, Peder & Else landed at Quebec, Canada and went by canal boat
through the Great Lakes to Milwaukee Wisconsin. I have found them on a passenger
list for the ship Christiane, which landed in New York on July 1850. Several other
people from Aadalen immigrated about that same time, and they traveled from Drammen
to New York and then went by canal boat to Buffalo New York and then went from
there by ship through the Great Lakes to Milwaukee. I think this is probably the
way that Peder & Else went also as it seems unreasonable that the ship would
have continued up to Quebec from New York, or that Peder & Else would have
chosen to stay on the ship and depart at Quebec if their destination was Wisconsin.
From Milwaukee they walked to Rock Prairie, Dane Co., Wisconsin. Peder Lunde worked
for a short time in a lead mine at Mineral Point, and he was a clerk in Peddler's
Creek, Wisconsin by 1852. The family then emigrated from Wisconsin to Iowa between
1852 to 1856, and they are on the 1856 state census of Osage Twp., Mitchell Co.,
IA. Peder & Else emigrated from Iowa to Minnesota in July 1856. They were
one of the first two permanent settlers of Hayward, Freeborn County, MN in July
1856 (the other was Endre Gulbrandson, a relative of Peder's. Endre Gulbrandson's
wife was Marit Gravle, Else's first cousin who had been raised in her family.)
Peder & Else's son Ole was born on May 27, 1858 - he was the first white child
born in Hayward, Freeborn Co., MN. The family is on th 1860, 1870 & 1880 censuses
of Hayward, Freeborn Co., MN. The first log school house in Hayward was built
on Peder's farm. Peder A. Lunde died on October 1891 in Hayward. Else is
listed on the 1900 census, living with her son Asle's 4 children, who had been
orphaned when their father died in 1892 & their mother died in 1896. Else
is listed on the 1905 state census of Moscow Township, Freeborn Co., MN living
with her son Ole P. Lunde & his family. Ole's daughter Cornelia remembered
having to keep an eye on Else in her last years - Else had gotten a little "scattered"
and she would decide she was going to walk back home to Norway and take off. Cornelia
said Else was a fast walker! Else Olsdatter Gravli Lunde died in 1908 in Freeborn
Co., MN. Ole & Else are buried in the Hayward Lutheran church Cemetery,

The children of Peder Asleson Lunde & Else Olsdatter Gravli:
| Asle Pedersen Lunde | Asle Pederson Lunde was born April 8,
1846 in Aadalen, Buskerud, Norway. He came to America with his parents when
he was 4 years old. After living in Wisconsin a few years, Asle is listed at age
10 with his parents on the 1856 state census of Osage Twp., Mitchell Co., IA.
The family then settled in MN, and Asle is listed with his parents on the 1860,
1870 & 1880 censuses of Hayward, Freeborn Co., MN. This photo of Asle was
taken about 1872 when he was 26 years old. Asle married Gunhild Fredericksdatter
on May 15, 1883 in Freeborn Co., MN and they had 4 children. Gunhild was the
daughter of Fredrik Jorgensen Omoen and Eli Olsdatter Lunde. Asle & Gunhild
were second cousins - their grandmothers Kari & Barbro Hval were sisters.
Asle died on November 5, 1892 in Hayward, Freeborn Co., MN. His death was
caused by a kick from a horse. Gunhild died in 1896 in Hayward, Freeborn Co.,
MN. Asle and Gunhild are both buried in the Hayward Cemetery, Hayward, Freeborn,
Minnesota. Asle's 4 children stayed in their home with their grandmother, Else
Gravli Lunde, and later by themselves; they spent summers, most holidays and lots
of time with Ole & Ingeborg Lunde's 6 children after the death of their parents,
and were referred to as "The 10 cousins" The Family of Asle Pedersen Lunde & Gunhild Fredericksdatter Notes for Asle Lunde Tombstone of Asle Pedersen Lunde | |
| Ole Pedersen Lunde | Ole Pedersen Lunde was
born May 27, 1858 in Hayward, Freeborn Co., MN. He was the first white child
born in Hayward. Ole is listed with his parents on the 1860, 1870 & 1880 censuses
of Hayward, Freeborn Co., MN. Ole married Ingeborg Olsdatter Viker on May
15, 1881 in Grand Meadow, Mower Co., MN, and they had 6 children. Ingeborg was
the daughter of Ole Nilsen Viker & Margit Onsgaard.
The family is listed on the 1900, 1905, 1910, & 1920 censuses of Moscow Twp,
Freeborn Co., MN. Ole and Ingeborg retired from farming in 1920, and went to Hayward
to live. Their son Rudolph took over the Moscow farm. Son Peter bought his own
farm down the road. Pete's son, Olaf, said that for about 5 minutes their daughter
Margaret owned the Moscow farm, then she signed papers (quit claim?) as the elder,
and it went to Rudolph. Margaret lived in Hayward with her parents after they
moved to Hayward. They are listed on the 1930 census of Hayward, Freeborn Co.,
MN. Ole Pedersen Lunde died on April 18, 1933 and Ingeborg died on June 18,
1948, both in Hayward, Freeborn Co., MN. They are buried in the Hayward Cemetery,
