Jensen,
Thomas H, born Dutchess County, N. Y., came when quite young to Caroline, Tompkins
County, N.Y. He taught school most of his life He married Betsey K. Barbour, of
Chemung County, and they had six children: Spencer H Mary E., James, Seymour H.,
Daniel, and Joel M. The latter was born January 3, 1843, and was reared on a farm.
When eighteen years 0ld he enlisted in Company C., One Hundred and Forty-first
Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry, and served until the close of the war. He
was promoted fife-major of the regiment, was with Sherman on his march to the
sea, and was discharged June 8, 1865. November 9, 1865, he married Philena M.,
daughter of John and Mary. Breese of Horseheads by whom he had four children,
viz. M. Maud, who married Eugene Atkins, superintendent of the poor of Chemung
County; Winifred who married Bela C. Tifft of Horseheads, agent for the Wells-Fargo
Express Company; and Ernest D. and Bessie M., who, reside at home. Mr. Jansen
was keeper of the county-house, for six, years, and reigned the position on account
of the death of his wife, January 8, 1888. He was solicitor insurance for Chemung
County outside of Elmira till March 1, I891. when he was reappointed keeper of
the poor-house, which position he still holds.
