58. ABRAHAM7 BENNETT, LLL (ABRAHAM6, ABRAHAM5, JAMES4, THOMAS3, JAMES2, NICHOLAS1) was born August 7, 1778 in Orange Co, NY, and died March 25, 1851 in Near Big Flats, Town of Corning, Stueben Co,NY. He married (1) PEGGY BURT, daughter of THOMAS BURT and WELLING. She was born October 1, 1781, and died April 10, 1839. He married (2) NANCY GOFF August 25, 1839.

Notes for ABRAHAM BENNETT, LLL:
The next old pioneer in order in my journal is Abram Bennitt. For many years he resided in the town of Big Flats, but for thirty of thirty five years preceding his death he resided upon the same farm in East Painted Post. His 1st wife Peggy, who died in 1839, aged 56, was a very accomplished and amiable woman. Her children were Telman N. Bennitt, Atlas Bennitt, and Telina (wife of the Hon. Samuel Minier, Esq.), Lorinda (deceased wife of Henry Minier Esq.), Sabina (deceased wife of George W. Longstreet of Cayuga Co NY) and Pantha (deceased wife of Frederick Wolcott of East Painted Post) of whom I shall hereafter separately speak. Nancy (widow of Roswell Goff was his 2nd wife by whom be had 2 children, Harrison and Peggy.

Abram Bennitt deserves a more extended notice than my limits will permit me to make. He was, for more than that half a century, a consistent Christian and Free Mason, and probably no man (the Rev. Roswell Goff excepted) did more to establish the Baptist Church in
Big Flats than he, and probably on one of the founders contributed more to its support and maintenance, and no one was more persecuted
by bigots and fanatics on account of his connection with the Free Masons.

Under the leadership of the Rev. Benjamin R Swick, an anti-Mason and pastor of the church in 1845-6-7 the idea was conceived by him that Free Masonry was incompatible with pure Christianity. Swick succeeded in influencing a sufficient number of his church to coincide with him in his bigotry and ignorance, and accordingly Mr. Bennitt, one of the patriarchs of the church, together with David B. Brown Esq., now of Elmira and Dr. William S. Minier were excommunicated.

Conscious of having committed no crime either in the sight of an all wise and beneficent Creator, or in the unprejudiced or unbiased judgment of man he passed the evening of his life like one who had "fought the good fight" and "had kept the faith". He passed the ordeal
of death in 1856, aged 75. Let the brethren of the "Mystic tie" ever cherish his memory and imitate his virtues.
