THE FAMILY OF SAMUEL BREESE & BETSY SMITH

Samuel Breese & Betsy SmithSamuel Breese & Betsy Smith were married about 1802, probably in Tioga (later became Chemung) Co., New York. They had 11 children, 9 of whom lived to adulthood. The family is listed on the 1810, 1820, 1830 & 1840 censuses of Elmira, Tioga (was Chemung in 1840) Co, New York. Daughter Lorinda married Clark W. Wormley about 1839 (where?) and their first child was born in 1840 in Illinois. In 1843, 1844, 1846, 1847 and 1848, more of their children married in Kane Co., Illinois. Betsy Smith died in 1846, probably in Elmira, Chemung, New York. Samuel emigrated to Illinois, probably to join his children there after Betsy died. Samuel Breese is recorded in the 1848 Kane County Personal Property Tax List, residing in Aurora Twp.; valuation $159. Samuel Breese died on April 2, 1849 in Aurora, Kane Co., Illinois. He is buried in the West Aurora Cemetery, Aurora, Kane, Illinois along with several of his children, but I am not sure if wife Betsy is buried there also. Samuel's stone was buried for many years, and his grave was listed as an Unknown. Thanks to Lisa Gerald & Elaine Lindoo for their work restoring and documenting the West Aurora Cemetery.

The Children of Samuel Breese & Betsy Smith

Hellen M. BreeseHellen Mariah Breese was born on January 24, 1803 in New York . There is a female the right age to be Hellen in the household of Samuel Breese on the 1810 census of Elmira, Tioga, New York.. I have not found Hellen in 1820, but she had son Lysander C. Breese on October 29, 1824 in New York. There is a female the right age group to be Hellen and also a male the right age group to be Lysander in the household of Samuel Breese on the 1830 census of Elmira, Tioga, New York. Helen M. Breese is listed as head of household on the 1840 census of Elmira, Chemung, New York with a male the right age to be son Lysander and an unknown female under age 5. Hellen married widower John A. Miller sometime between 1840 and 1850. John, Hellen, and his daughter Ellen from his first marriage are listed on the 1850 census of Lenawee Co., Michigan, and I have not found Lysander in 1850 on any census. John A. Miller died in 1852, and Hellen moved to Kane Co., Illinois to live with her son Lysander. She is listed with him and his family on the 1860 & 1870 censuses of Aurora, Kane, Illinois. Hellen Maria Breese Miller died on January 27, 1872 in Aurora, Kane, Illinois. She is buried in the West Aurora Cemetery, Aurora, Kane, Illinois. Her gravestone says she is the wife of John A. Miller, and also says "MOTHER". It is next to the stone of Samuel Breese. Note: There are some online trees that state that Samuel & Betsy had a son Cicero Breese who parented Lysander Breese with an unknown mother. In this case Hellen M. (Unknown) would be this unknown mother. I believe what I have written fits the documentation better as there is no son in Samuel Breese's household in 1810 and Lysander was born in 1824. Child of Hellen Maria Breese & Unknown father is Lysander (1824)

Eveline Breese Eveline Breese was born on February 15, 1805 in New York. She is listed as a child of this family on Judy Martin's "Bonner Martin Family Tree" on Ancestry.com. Eveline died when very young. Eveline Breese died between 1805-1806 in New York.
Loretta BreeseLoretta Breese was born on April 18, 1809 in New York. She was the twin of Lorinda Breese who was born on April 18, 1809. There are females the right ages to be Loretta & Lorinda, age 1, 11 and 21 in the household of Samuel Breese on the 1810, 1820 & 1830 censuses of Elmira, Tioga, New York. Loretta is not listed with her parents in 1840, but there is a female in the household of her married sister Lorinda that is probably Loretta. Loretta married Henry Vail Breese on December 02, 1843 in Kane Co., Illinois. Henry & Loretta were second cousins - their father's John Pierson Brees & Samuel Breese were first cousins. Loretta and Henry had 2 children. The family is listed on the 1850, 1860, 1870 & 1880 censuses of Aurora, Kane Co., Illinois. In 1850 Henry's occupation is listed as Druggist; in 1860 it is listed as Gardener'Henry died on May 20, 1889 in Kane Co., Illinois. Loretta Breese Breese died on July 20, 1893 in Kane Co., Illinois. Henry & Loretta are both buried in Spring Lake Cemetery, Kane Co., Illinois. Children of Henry Brees & Loretta Breese are: Mary Elizabeth (1844) & Huon Francis "Frank" (1846) Breese

Lorinda BreeseLorinda Breese was born on April 18, 1809 in New York. She was the twin of Loretta Breese, who was also born about 1809. There are females the right ages to be Loretta & Lorinda, age 1, 11 and 21 in the household of Samuel Breese on the 1810, 1820 & 1830 censuses of Elmira, Tioga, New York. Lorinda married Clark Winans Wormley about 1839, and they had two children. Clark was about 6 years younger than Lorinda, which I think explains why Lorinda stated that she was younger than she actually was on census records 1850 and later. The family is listed on the 1840 census of Kane Co., Illinois, and Lorinda's sister Loretta is probably living with them. Lorinda B. Wormley bought land in Illinois in 1843, and also bought land in Kendall Co., Illinois on July 10, 1844. The family is listed on the 1850, 1860 & 1870 census of Oswego, Kendall Co., Illinois. In 1850, Clark is listed as owning $1900 in real estate and Lorinda is listed as owning $1460 real estate. In 1860 Clark is listed as owning $4,000 real estate and in 1870 he is listed as owning $10,500 real estate. Clark & Lorinda had marital troubles, and separated sometime between 1870 to 1880. I find Clark living as a boarder in another household in 1880, and I haven't been able to find Lorinda that census year. On July 5, 1882 Clark W. Wormley married second to Laura Adams in Marengo, Iowa Co., Iowa. Lorinda Breese Wormley died on June 22, 1885 in Kankakee Co., Illinois. She has two memorials on www.findagrave.com. She was originally buried on June 26, 1885 in West Aurora Cemetery (S3 B5 L71), but her remains were moved to Spring Lake Cemetey, Kane Co., Illinois on April 30, 1888. The West Aurora cemetery record states that she was 75 years old, and that she died of "Hemorage". Children of Clark & Lorinda (I think!) were: Julia A. Wormley (1840, George Wormley (1842) and possibly Frank Wormley (1858)
Notes for Lorinda Breese Wormley
Seneca C. BreeseSeneca Cicero Breese was born on May 11, 1811 in Elmira, Tioga (became Chemung), New York. There is a male the right age to be Seneca, ages 9 & 19 in the household of Samuel Breese on the 1820 & 1830 censues of Elmira, Tioga, New York. There are 3 males age 20-29 in Samuel Breese's household in 1840, and he had 4 sons who were in that age group so one could possibly be Seneca, age 29. "Seneca Cicero Breese" is listed on an Illinois land purchase record dated June 7, 1842. His mother died in 1846, probably in New York, and his father died in 1848 in Kane Co., Illinois. Seneca married Eliza Weatherwax sometime before 1850. Seneca & Eliza are listed on the 1850 census of Madison, Lenawee Co., Michigan. At that time Seneca was age 42, occupation farmer, and Eliza was age 42. No children are listed in their household at that time. Seneca C. Breese is listed as purchasing land in Denmark, Tuscola Co., Michigan on February 12, 1851. Eliza died on January 28, 1853 in Lenawee Co., Michigan. She is buried in Sand Creek Cemetery, Lenawee Co., Michigan, and her gravestone states that she was wife of S. C. Breese and that she was aged 44 years, 6 months & 29 days when she died. I have not found Seneca on the 1860 or 1870 census at this time, although he is listed in the 1859-1860 city directory for Aurora, Kane, Illinois. At that time his occupation was Brickmkr, and his home was "Broadway bet Flag and Spring". Seneca Ciciero Breese died on September 11, 1872. He is buried in West Aurora Cemetery, Aurora, Kane Co., Illinois. The name Eliza Weatherwax is on his marker with no dates. The marker is four sided, but two of the sides do not have names. I do not know of any children that Seneca had at this time.

Angeline married Phineas Nelson Culver on December 30, 1844 in Kane Co., Illinois, and they had 2 daughters, the first was born in 1845 in Prospect, Cook Co., Illinois. Phineas died on August 22, 1849. He is buried in Cook Co., Illinois. Angeline was married second to Calvin Valentine on June 25, 1850 in Kendall Co., Illinois, and they had 2 sons.I have not found Angeline in 1850 at this time, but her daughter Julia, age 5, is listed with Clark & Lorinda (Breese) Wormley in Oswego, Kendall, Illinois. Calvin, Angeline and the children are listed on the 1860 census of Oswego, Kendall, Illinois. Calvin died on July 17, 1861 in probably Oswego, Kendall Co., Illinois. Angeline is listed on the 1870 & 1880 censuses of Oswego, Kendall Co., Illinois. Angeline Breese Culver Valentine died on September 13, 1885 in Aurora, Kane Co., Illinois. Angeline is buried in West Aurora Cemetery, Aurora, Kane Co., Illinois. Children of Phineas Culver & Angeline Breese were Julia Augusta (1845) & Adaline Breese (1848) Culver. Children of Calvin Valentine & Angeline Breese were Charles Henry (1850) & Ransom Clark (1854) Valentine.

On August 26, 1897, there was an article in the Batavia (Illinois) Herald that said "The relatives of John and Grover Breese of Aurora held a picnic and family reunion at the farm of the former, west of Aurora. The event was in honor of the 81st birthday of John and Grover. They are the oldest twins in the vicinity and are the last of a large family of brothers and sisters."
