Hannah Bennett was born abt 1740, probably in Connecticut. She was either the daughter of Ephraim Bennett & Hannah Benedict, or of Abraham Bennett Sr & Silence Hickox. Ephraim & Abraham were brothers, both sons of James Bennett & Deborah Adams

Jonathan Rockwell & Hannah Bennett Jonathan Rockwell & Hannah Bennett were married on January 1, 1760 in Ridgefield, CT, and they had 7 children. The family moved to Orange county, NY just prior to the American Revolution. Jonathan supposedly worked in Newburg and later lived on a farm in Warwick township.When the war broke out Jonathan, being a member of the militia, was called into service. He was a private in the 4th Regiment under Col. John Hawthorne (spelled Hathorn in other records). His service is accepted by the D.A.R. (#116302; #127548; #368970). In September 1775, Jonathan was listed on the assessment rolls of Warwick Twp., Goshen, NY in District #2. The family is listed on the 1790 census of Warwick, Orange Co., NY. In about 1791 the family moved to the area of Tioga Co., NY that became later became Chemung Co., NY. In 1794 Jonathan was listed as a taxpayer in Newtown (now Elmira) NY. On August 02, 1794, Jonathan and Hannah Rockwell received by letter of dismissal from the Warwick Church in Orange Co.., NY and joined the Wellsburg (or Chemung) Baptist Church. Their names are mentioned many times in the minutes of church meetings from 1797 to 1807. The family is listed on the 1800 census of Newtown, Tioga Co., NY. In the 1810 Federal census, Jonathan and Hannah are apparently living with their son William. Jonathan Rockwell sometime after February 16th, 1820 when he 'personally appeared' to sign a land deed. He probably died in Big Flats, Chemung Co., NY, although it is not known where he or Hannah are buried. Hannah Bennett Rockwell died sometime after March 1820, probably in Chemung Co., NY. Hannah's g-granddaughter Mary Ann Moore later married John Brees, who was a grandson of Abraham Bennett Jr. Abraham Bennett Jr. was either Hannah's brother or her first cousin.

Hannah Rockwell Hannah Rockwell was born October 6, 1760 in Ridgefield, Fairfield Co., Connecticut. Hannah married Cornelius Hopper about 1777, probably in New York, and records indicate that they had 13 children. There is a family headed by Cornelius Hopper on the 1790 census of Luzerne Co,. PA that has numbers that fit this family. They are listed on the 1800 census of Newtown, Tioga Co., NY, and on the 1810 census of Elmira, Tioga Co., NY. Cornelius Hopper died on February 21, 1814 in Belfast, Allegany Co., NY. Hannah is possibly the female over age 45 living with married daughter Hannah (Abraham) Minier on the 1820 census of Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY. I have not found Hannah on the 1830 census at this time. Hannah Rockwell Hopper died on April 07, 1839 in Milport, Tioga Co., NY. Children of Hannah Rockwell & Cornelius Hopper are: Matthew (1778), Hannah (1781), Olive (1782), Esther (1784), Mary (1787), Anna (1789), Rockwell (1792), Amy (1794), Margaret (1797), Ira (1799), Unknown Son (1800-1810), Elizabeth (1801) and Tarry/Fanny (1804).

James Rockwell

James Rockwell was born on March 7, 1763. He is listed by some researchers as being a son of Ezra Rockwell, but DNA studies show he is probably a son of Jonathan Rockwell & Hannah Bennett. James married Hannah Mead Burt about 1783 in Orange Co., NY, and they had at least 4children. Based on birthplaces of their children, they were in New York City, New York in 1795, and in Orange Co., New York in 1788. They moved from Orange to Chemung Co., NY about that time, and James Rockwell is listed on a 1788 survey of Chemung (now Ashland), Chemung, NY. James Rockwell died on February 15, 1835 in Madison Twp, Scioto Co., OH. Hannah died on May 6, 1848. They are both buried in the Martins Cemetery, Madison Twp, Scioto Co., Ohio. Children of James Rockwell & Hannah Mead Burt are: Jonathan (1785), Joseph, (1788), Mary (1795) & Ezra (1801).

Esther RockwellEsther Rockwell was born on March 19, 1769 in Orange Co., NY. Esther married Abraham Vail on July 30, 1789 in the First Presbyterian Church, Goshen, Orange Co., NY. They had at least 5 children. Abraham joined the military in 1800. Esther Rockwell Vail died on October 21, 1811 in Goshen, Orange, New York. Abraham was promoted to first Lieutenant by 1814, to Colonel by 1820, and later was made a Brigadier General. Abraham died on October 14, 1851. Children of Abraham Vail & Esther Rocwell are Eleanor (1793), Abraham (1794-1800), Unknown Daughter (1794-1800), Hannah (1799) and John (1800)

Jonathan married Hannah Rawson about 1797 in NY, and census records indicate that they had at least 9 children. They are listed on the 1800 census of Newtown, Tioga Co., NY. They are listed on the 1810 census of Elmira, Tioga Co., NY. The family moved from New York to Indiana sometime between 1810-1820, and they are listed on the 1820 census of Vigo Co., IN. Hannah died or they divorced sometime between 1820-1827, and Jonathan was married second to Philinda Sibley Johnson about 1827 in Indiana. Philinda was the widow of Willard Johnson, and she had several children from her first marriage. Jonathan & Philinda had 4 more children. Philinda died or they divorced sometime between 1833 to 1848. A biography of one of her sons from her first marriage states that Philena died in 1852, but I have not found her on the 1850 census at this time, and Jonathan married third Margaret Justus Morgan Cox, on October 1, 1848 in Indiana. Margaret was a widow with at least 2 children from her marriage to second husband Jonathan Cox, and Jonathan & Margaret had at least one more daughter. Jonathan & Margaret are listed on the 1850 census of District 85, Parke Co., Indiana. Jonathan Rockwell died on October 14, 1851 in Parke Co., Indiana. Margaret died on April 29, 1869.

There is a male who could be Jonathan, age 19, in the household of Jonathan Rockwell on the 1800 census of Newtown, Tioga Co., NY. William married Anna Kelsey on November 8, 1801, probably in Tioga Co., NY, and they had one daughter. Anna died in 1806. William married Nancy Bennett on Feb.15, 1807 in Big Flats, Tioga Co., NY. Nancy was the daughter of Abraham Bennett & Jerusha Wanzer. William & Nancy were first cousins as William's mother Hannah & Nancy's father Abraham were siblings. Nancy's brother John also married William's sister Sally. William and Nancy had at least 7 children. There is a William Rockwell listed as head of household on the 1810 & 1820 censuses of Elmira, Tioga Co., NY. According to Towner's "History of Chemung County, New York, in 1822 William purchased the farm where they resided the rest of their lives, but I do not find them on the 1830 census at this time. Chemung County was created from part of Tioga Co., NY in 1836. The family is listed on the 1840 & 1850 censuses of Elmira, Chemung Co., NY - in 1850 Nancy is listed as being age 58. Nancy Bennett Rockwell died on January 1, 1859 in Chemung Co., NY. She was age 67 at the time of her death. William is listed at age 78 on the 1860 census of Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY. William Rockwell died on May 24, 1863 in Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY. He was age 82 at the time of his death. Child of William Rockwell & Anna Kelsey is Anna (1805). Children of William Rockwell & Nancy Bennett are: Daniel (1809), Abram (1818), Ezra (1821), Charles (1826), Isaac (1828), Philinda (1830) & John (1834).

John was the son of Abraham Bennett & Jerusha Wanzer. John & Sally were first cousins who shared the same birthday - John's father Abraham & Sally's mother Hannah were siblings. John's sister Nancy also married Sally's brother William. John & Sally had 8 children, born between 1808 to 1830. The family is listed on the 1810 & 1820 censuses of Elmira, Tioga Co., NY. They are listed on the 1830 census of Big Flats, Tioga Co., NY. Chemung County was formed from part of Tioga Co., NY in 1836. John Bennett died on February 8, 1837 in Big Flats,Chemung Co, NY. He left a will that named his wife and children, and he also left some money to Milla Atwood, who was Sally's daughter from her first marriage. John is buried in the Sing Sing (Pioneer) Cemetery, Big Flats, Chemung Co., NY. Sarah "Sally" Rockwell Bennett died on November 29, 1849. Child of Sally Rockwell & Benjamin Atwood is Milla (1806). Children of Sally Rockwell & John Bennett are Comfort (1809), Jeerusha (1811), Thomas (1815), Deobrah (1810-1820), Josiah (1820), Hannah (1823), Miles (1829) & Elias (1830). Of their 8 children, only Miles C. Bennett stayed in Big Flats, Chemung Co., NY.
