are listed on the 1870 & 1880 censuses of Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY. In
1880 their grandson Ernest Moody is living with them - they raised him after their
daughter Minnie Brees Moody died July 16, 1877. Mary Ann Moore Brees died on
April 11, 1890 and John died on March 05, 1897. They are both buried in the

Chemung Co., NY. There is a female the right age group to be Alvina, age 7,
in the household of John Brees 2nd on the 1840 census of Elmira, Chemung Co.,
NY. She is listed as Alvira, age 17, on the 1850 census of Elmira, Chemung Co.,
NY. Alvina married Simeon Case on February 09, 1853 and they had 3 children.
Sometime between 1854 to 1857 they moved to Minnesota, and the family is on the
1860 census of Owatonna, Steele Co., MN. Simeon Case served in the Union Army
in the Civil War, enlisting on October 1, 1861 as a private in Company E 4th Minnesota
Infantry, commanded by Captain E. LeGro. Simeon was transferred to the Invalid
Corps, Co K, 23rd Regt V R C, by reason of chronic diarrhea & loss of right
thumb, and he was discharged from military service on October 1, 1864 at Fort
Snelling, MN. Simeon returned home to Steele Co., MN, and Alvina's brother Solomon
& his family joined them there in 1866. Simeon & Alvina are listed with
their family on the 1870 censuses of Owatonna, Steele Co., MN. They moved between
1870 to 1880 from Steele to Benton Co,. MN, and they are listed on the 1880 census
of Langola, Benton, Minnesota. Simeon died on April 13, 1895 in Graham, Benton
Co., MN. Sometime between 1895 to1900 Alvina moved from Minnesota to Washington,
and she is listed as widowed on the 1900 census Delaware Precinct, 4th Ward Spokane,
Spokane Co, WA. Alvina R. Brees Case died on October 10, 1902 in Spokane, Spokane
Co, WA . Children of Alvina Brees & Simeon Case are: Amelia (1854), Frank

7 children. According to birthplaces I have for their children, they lived in
Factoryville, NY (1862), Otokee, OH (1864) Horseheads, NY (1867)n and then Otokee,
OH again (1869). The family is listed on the 1870 census of Seneca Twp., Lenawee,
Co., MI, along with several of Squire's Brees uncles and cousins. Continuing with
birthplaces of Squire's children; they were in Piketown, OH (1871), and East Saginaw,
Mich. (1874). They were in Owatonna, Steele Co., MN, in 1878 when they moved to
Douglas County, MN with Squire's brother Solomon Brees & his family. Squire
and his family are listed on the 1880 census of Orange, Douglas Co., MN. Their
youngest child was born in1882 in Hudson Township, MN, and the family moved to
Todd Co., MN in 1886. (Solomon & family also moved to Todd Co., MN in 1891).
The family is listed on the 1900 census of Birchdale Twp, Todd Co., MN. Squire
Brees died on May 27, 1906 in Grey Eagle, Todd Co., MN. Ellen died on September
12, 1919, also in Todd Co., MN. They are buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Grey Eagle,

Chemung Co., NY. Solomon E. Brees & Sarah Jane Thorn were married October
06, 1865 in Erie, Erie Co., PA. They had 9 children, 8 of whom lived to adulthood.
At first they farmed in Chemung Co., New York, but they moved to Steele Co., MN
in the spring of 1866, The family is listed on the 1870 census of Havana, Steele
Co., MN. Then they had a claim near Owatonna, MN in 1874 - that claim was given
up very soon. The family returned to New York in 1876 with 4 children, but didn't
farm; son Ward was born there. In 1878, after Ward was born, they returned to
Steele Co., MN. Solomon kept a diary of the journey from Owatonna, Steele Co.,
MN to Douglas Co., MN. The diary begins on April 29, 1878 and ends on May 16,
1878. Solomon & Sarah Jane & family made this trip along with Solomon's
brother Squire Brees & family and also two of the children of Solomon's sister,
Alvina Brees Case. They settled on a farm near Osakis, Douglas Co, MN. (Cornelia
Lunde Brees referred to this farm as English Grove.) This photo of Solomon and
Sarah Jane was taken at English Grove. The family is listed on the 1880 &
1900 censuses of Orange, Douglas Co., MN. In 1901 they moved to the farm outside
Grey Eagle, MN. The family is listed on the 1910 & 1920 censuses of Birchdale
Twp., Todd Co., MN. Solomon died on April 08, 1921 in Grey Eagle, Todd Co.,
MN, and Sarah Jane died on January 06, 1922 in Osakis, Douglas Co., MN. They
are both buried at the English Grove Cemetery, Osakis, Douglas Co., MN. Their
farm in Todd Co., MN was later worked by Arthur Brees. Children of Solomon Brees

05, 1841 in Chemung Co., NY. She is listed with her parents on the 1850 &
1860 censuses of Elmira, Chemung Co., NY. Amelia married James C. Rutan
on November 13, 1861 and they had 7 children. James was the brother of Ellen Rutan
who had married Amelia's brother Squire on March 12, 1861. James served in the
Union Army of the Civil War, enlisting in Company A, 179th regiment of the New
York Volunteers in 1864. The family is listed on the 1870 census of Ward 3, Elmira,
Chemung Co., NY with Amelia's name listed as being Antonette. They are listed
on the 1880 census of Elmira, Chemung Co, NY.Sometime between 1880 & 1900
the family moved from New York to Pennsylvania. They are listed on the 1900 &
1910 census of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA. James' occupation is listed
as Carpenter on the 1870, 1880 & 1900 censuses. I have seen information
listing the death date of both James & Amelia Brees Rutan as being February
26, 1911 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA. There is a Civil War
pension record for James C. Rutan of A179 NY Inf. that is on file that needs to
be researched. I have not been able to find James or Amelia on the 1920 census

| Philena Brees | Philena M. Brees was born on Abt. July
19, 1843 in Chemung Co., NY. She is listed with her parents on the 1850 &
1860 censuses of Elmira, Chemung Co., NY. Philena married Joel Jansen on
November 9, 1865, probably in Chemung Co., NY, and they had 4 children. The family
is listed on the 1870 & 1880 census of Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY. In 1870
they are living next door to Philena's married sister Fanny Ormiston & her
husband's family. On later census records Philena's name is listed as Lena. Of
their children, their daughter Maud married Eugene Atkins, who was the superintendent
of the poor of Chemung County. Their daughter Winifred married Bela C. Tifft of
Horseheads, who was agent for the Wells-Fargo Express Company. Joel Jansen was
keeper of the county-house from 1882 to 1888, but he resigned the position on
account of the death of his wife on January 8, 1888. Philena Brees Jansen died
on January 05, 1888 in Chemung Co., NY. Joel was solicitor insurance for Chemung
County outside of Elmira till March 1, I891, when he was reappointed keeper of

1845 in Chemung Co., NY. He is listed with his parents on the 1850 & 1860
censuses of Elmira, Chemung Co., NY. Philander married Julia Ann Whitney
about 1870 and they had at least 5 children. The family is listed on the 1870,
1880, 1900 & 1910 censuses of Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY. In 1900 Julia is
listed as having 8 births with 4 children surviving, and in 1910 she is listed
as having 5 births with 4 surviving children at that time. Julia died on July
16, 1910 and Philander Brees died on July 19, 1917 in Horseheads, Chemung Co.,
NY . They are both buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Horseheads, Chemung

Chemung Co., NY. She is listed with her parents on the 1850 & 1860 censuses
of Elmira, Chemung Co., NY. Fanny married James Ormiston in 1869, probably
in Chemung Co., NY, and they had 4 children. The family is on the 1870,1880, 1900
& 1910 censuses of Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY. In 1870 they are living with
James' parents, and next door to Fanny's married sister Philena Jansen & family.
In both 1900 & 1910 Fanny is listed as having 4 births and 1 surviving child
at that time. Fanny Brees Ormiston died on October 25, 1918, probably in Horseheads,

| Judson Brees | Adoniram Judson Brees was born on June 21, 1852
in Chemung Co., NY. He is listed with his parents on the 1860 censuses of
Elmira, Chemung Co., NY, and on the 1870 census of Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY.
Judson married Nora Hunt about 1879 and they had two daughters; they are
living with his parents on the 1880 census of Horseheads. Judson is listed twice
on the 1891 City Directory of Corning, Steuben Co., NY, with his occupation given
as Brakeman & also as a F. B. C. Co. employee. They are on the 1900 census
of Corning, Steuben Co., NY. At that time Nora was listed as having 1 birth with
1 surviving child, but that is not correct as she had a daughter in 1879 and another
in 1881. Judson & Nora are listed on the 1910 census of Deerpark Twp., Port
Jarvis City, Orange Co., NY under the name Adinoram J. Breese; at that time Judson's
occupation was dealer in Butter & Eggs and Nora was listed as having 2 births
with 1 surviving child. Lois Brees had a note that he lived at one time in Athens,
PA, but I did not find him there in any of the census years. Adoniram Judson
Brees died on June 24, 1918 in Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY. Nora remarried
Willard/William Peterson about 1919.Willard & Nora are listed on the 1920
census of Erwin, Steuben Co., NY, and on the 1930 census of Painted Post, Steuben
Co., NY. Nora died on April 25, 1938, probably in Steuben Co., NY. Judson &
Nora are buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY. Children
of Judson Brees & Nora Hunt are: Lula (1879) & Mable (1881). | |
| Minnie Brees | Minnie A. Brees was born on August 01, 1855 in Chemung
Co., NY. She is listed at age 5 with her parents on the 1860 censuses of Elmira,
Chemung Co., NY, and at age 15 on the 1870 census of Horseheads, Chemung Co.,
NY. Minnie married James Moody about 1876 and they had one son named Ernest
born in 1877. Minnie Brees Moody died on July 16, 1877 in Chemung Co, NY and
she is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY. She died at
age 21, possibly in childbirth. I don't know when or where James Moody died, but
