THE FAMILIES OF JACOB BENNETT
First Marriage:
| Jacob Bennett & Julia Benjamin | Jacob Bennett
married Julia Benjamin about 1793 and they had 11 children. Their son Isaac
was born June 7, 1793 in NY or Litchfield Co., CT, and daughter Jerusha was born
Sept. 17, 1795 in NY or NJ. No 1800 census for New Jersey exists, but their son
Benjamin, born July 18, 1800, is listed on all later census records as being born
in New Jersey. According to the "History of the Settlement of Steuben County,
New York" by Guy McMasters [1853], Jacob, Benjamin and Daniel N. Bennett,
"settled in 1807 or about that time" in Steuben Co, NY "on what
is yet called Bennetts Flatts". Jacob operated the hotel on the corner
in Howard, Steuben Co., NY. (The Gaynor House was located on that spot in 1983.)
Jacob Bennett is listed as a head of household on the 1810 census of Canisteo,
Steuben Co., NY, living near the households of Thomas & Benjamin Bennett.
The town of Howard was formed from part of Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY in 1812.
Jacob Bennett is listed as a head of household on the 1820 census of Howard, Steuben
Co., NY, living near the households of Jacob's mother Jerusha, his married daughter
Jerusha Bennet Sabin, & several of his brothers and sons.I think that Julia
Benjamin Bennett probably died sometime between 1820-1824, when Jacob was
remarried to Thankful Baker. This is not definite, and more documentation
is need on this family. A bio of daughter Adaline states that Julia Benjamin Bennett
died in 1815, but it also states that her father Jacob Bennett died in 1842, which
isn't correct as he is listed on the census in 1850. See below for more information
on his later marriages. Notes for Jacob Bennett |
The Children of Jacob Bennett & Julia Benjamin:
| Isaac B. Bennett | Isaac B. Bennett was born about 1794 in NY or
CT. At least one online tree lists his birthplace as Barkhamp or Barkhamstad,
Litchfield Co., CT, but his children who survived until 1880 listed his birthplace
as NY or England. I have not found his parents on the 1800 census at this
time; they were probably in New Jersey, where no census exists for that year.
The family moved to Steuben Co., NY about 1807. There is a male the right age
to be Isaac, age 16, in the household of Jacob Bennett on the 1810 census of Canisteo,
Steuben Co., NY. Isaac married Deborah about 1815 and they had one son.
Deborah died or they separated, and Isaac married Lydia Rathbone about
1819, and census records indicate that they had 5 more children. They are listed
on the 1820 & 1830 censuses of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. Isaac erected a small
log tavern on the corner of the street leading to the Baptist church in Howard,
Steuben Co., NY. and he was the School Commissioner of Howard in 1824. Isaac
B. Bennett died on March 26, 1836 in Howard, Steuben Co., NY. Lydia is listed
as head of household on the 1840 & 1850 censuses of Howard, Steuben Co., NY.
Isaac is listed as deceased in his father's will that was signed January 25, 1851
& probated December 1, 1851, and 3 of his daughters are named as heirs with
their husbands in the will. I have not found Lydia on the 1860 census at this
time. Lydia Rathbun Bennett died in 1861. Child of Isaac B. Bennett & Deborah
is Unknown Son #1 (born between 1816-1820). Children of Isaac B. Bennett &
Lydia Rathbun are: Unknown Son #2 (born between 1821-1825), Unknown Son #3 (born
between 1826-1830), Lydia (1827), Helen (1833) & Julia (1836). Two of the
above Unknown Sons were named Isaac & Joseph, but I have not been able to
find either on census records 1850 or after to confirm ages. According to Bea
Daggett's website, Isaac B. Bennett had sons Isaac & Joseph who "were
stockholders & officers in the Castana Creamery Co. & had three hotels,
Stowell House, the Pioneer Hotel and Whiting House" (in I assume Monona Co.,
Iowa where their sisters Julia & Helen both settled). Children of Isaac B.
Bennett & Lydia Rathbun are Isaac (born 1820-1830), Joseph (1820-1830), Lydia
(1827), Helen (1833) & Julia (1836). Notes for Isaac B. Bennett
| Jerusha Bennett | Jerusha Bennett was born on September
17, 1795 in NY or NJ. There has been some confusion as to whether she was
the daughter of Abraham Bennett & Jerusha Wanzer, or of Jacob Bennett &
Julia Benjamin. As she is listed as a daughter in Jacob's will, I am assuming
that Jacob & Julia are the correct parents. I have not found Jacob & family
on the 1800 census at this time; they were probably in New Jersey, where no census
exists for that year. There is an unidentified female the right age group to be
Jerusha, age 5, in the household of Jerusha Bennet on the 1800 census of Warwick,
Orange Co., NY, which is one of the things that has added to the confusion. Jacob
Bennett moved with his family to Steuben County, NY about 1807. There is a female
the right age group to be Jerusha, age 15, in the household of Jacob Bennett on
the 1810 census of Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY. Jerusha married William Sabin
on January 05, 1820 in Steuben Co., NY and they had at least 10 children. They
are listed on the 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850 & 1860 censuses of Howard, Steuben
Co., NY. The 1850 census lists Jerusha's birthplace as New Jersey, and the 1860
lists it as New York. Jerusha Sabin is listed as a daughter, and William Sabin
is listed as a son-in-law in the will written by Jacob Bennett on January 25,
1851 (probated December 1, 1851). Jerusha Bennett Sabin died on July 6, 1861
in Howard, Steuben Co., NY. She is buried in the Old Towlesville Cemetery,
Howard, Steuben Co, NY. William Sabin died in 1868 in Titusville, PA. Some of
their sons emigrated to Illinois and then Tama Co., Iowa between 1860 to 1870.
Children of William Sabin & Jerusha Bennett are: Maria (1821), Jacob (1823),
Hannah (1825), William (1827), John (1828), Lydia (1830), Daniel (1833), twins
Orrin & Warren (1836) & George (1840). Notes for Jerusha Bennett Sabin
| Abraham Bennett | Abraham Bennett was born on September 13, 1798
in NY or NJ. I have not found his parents on the 1800 census at this time;
they were probably in New Jersey, where no census exists for that year. The family
moved to Steuben Co., NY about 1807. There is a male the right age to be Abraham,
age 12, in the household of Jacob Bennett on the 1810 census of Canisteo, Steuben
Co., NY. The town of Howard was formed from part of Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY
in 1812. Abraham married Emily Rathbone about 1819, probably in Howard,
Steuben Co., NY, and census records indicate they had 7 children. Abraham Bennett
is listed as head of household on the 1820 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY.
There is a household headed by Abraham Bennett on the 1830 census of Stockton,
Chataqua Co., NY that I think is this family, listed near the households of Jesse
Wells and David & Nathaniel Gitchell. Emily died in 1837, and Abraham was
married second to Cordelia about 1840, and they had 3 more children. The
family is listed on the 1850 & 1860 censuses of Rockdale, Crawford Co., PA,
and Abraham Bennet is listed as a son & heir in Jacob Bennett's will (written
on January 25, 1851 & probated December 1, 1851). Abraham & Cordelia moved
from Crawford County to Erie Co., PA sometime between 1860-1865, and Cordelia
died on August 23, 1865 in Mill Village, Erie Co., PA. Abraham was married third
to Betsy Bogle Wilkins on November 1, 1865 in Mill Village, Erie Co., PA
and they had 1 daughter. At the time of their marriage, Abraham was age 67 and
Betsy was age 35. They are listed on the 1870 census of LeBoeuf, Erie Co., PA,
and on the 1880 census of Mill Village, Erie Co., PA. Abraham Bennett died
on May 28, 1889 in Mill Village, Erie Co., PA. Abraham & second wife Cordelia
are both buried in the Chapinville Cemetery, Mill Village, Erie Co., PA. Betsy
died on February 11, 1901 in Fluvanna, NY. Children of Abraham Bennett & Emily
Rathbun are Son #1 (1820), Daughter #1 (born between 1821-1825), Son #2 (born
between 1821-1825), Edwin (1826), Son #4 (born between 1826-1830), Martin (1828)
& Eunice (1835). Children of Abraham Bennett & Cordelia are Emily (1843),
Jared Alphonso (1844) & Mary (1847). Child of Abraham Bennett & Betsy
Wilkins is Mary Ella (1867) Notes for Abraham Bennett
| Benjamin B. Bennett | Benjamin B. Bennett was born on
July 18, 1800 in New Jersey. I have not found his parents on the 1800 census
at this time; but no New Jersey census exists for that year. The family moved
to Steuben Co., NY about 1807. There is a male the right age to be Benjamin, age
9, in the household of Jacob Bennet on the 1810 census of Canisteo, Steuben Co.,
NY. Benjamin married Marietta Mapes about 1820, probably in Howard, Steuben
Co., NY.Benjamin Bennett Jr. is listed as head of household on the 1820 census
of Howard, Steuben Co., NY with a wife age 16-26 and no children at that time.
I do not know of any children for this marriage, and Marietta probably died before
1824. Benjamin remarried Mary Ann Armstrong about 1824, probably in Steuben
Co., NY, and they had 7 children. Benjamin Bennett is listed as a son & heir
in Jacob Bennett's will (written on January 25, 1851 & probated December 1,
1851).. The family is listed on the 1860 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY, living
next to the household of Sidney & Nancy (Bennett) Mesick, who is Benjamin's
half sister. Benjamin Bennett died on January 03, 1865 in Howard, Steuben Co.,
NY. Mary Ann is listed as head of household on the 1870 & 1880 censuses
of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. In 1880 she was age 70. Mary Ann died in 1894 in Howard,
Steuben Co., NY. Benjamin & Mary Ann are both buried in the Howard Cemetery,
Howard, Steuben Co., NY. Children of Benjamin B. Bennett & Mary Ann Armstrong
are David (1825), Adelia (1829), Amanda (1830), Oscar (1832), Asenath (1835),
Omer (1838), & Mary (1848). David married his first cousin Esther Gitchell,
daughter of David & Betsy (Bennett) Gitchell. Notes for Benjamin B. Bennett
| Betsy Bennett | Elizabeth "Betsy" Bennett was born November
2, 1802 in Steuben Co., NY as her parents moved there about that year. There
is a female the right age to be Betsy, age 8, in the household of Jacob Bennet
on the 1810 census of Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY. The town of Howard was formed
from part of Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY in 1812, and there is a female who is either
Betsy, age 18, or her sister Maria, age 17, in the household of Jacob Bennett
on the 1820 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY.. Betsy married David Gitchell
on November 15, 1821 and they had 9 children. The family is listed on the
1830 census of Stockton, Chataqua Co., NY. Based on birthplaces of their children,
the family moved from New York to Ohio about 1832, and from Ohio to Illinois about
1839. They are listed on the 1840 census of Rock Grove, Stephenson Co., IL. David
died on December 11, 1848 in Ridott, Stephenson Co., IL. I have not found Betsy
in 1850, but have found 5 of the children scattered amongst various households
in Stephenson Co., IL, and another son in Fayette Co., Iowa. Betsy Gitchell is
listed as a daughter in the will written by Jacob Bennett on January 25, 1851
& probated December 1, 1851. Betsy was married second to John Felton
on Sept. 3, 1857 in Stephenson Co., IL. They are listed on the 1860 census of
Ridott, Stephenson Co., IL, living next to Oscar & Mary (Gitchell) Osborn.
John died between 1860-1870, and Betsy is listed on the 1870 census of Ridott,
Stephenson Co., IL. Betsy moved from Illinois to Iowa sometime between 1870-1874.
A biography of her son-in-law Oscar H. Osborn indicates that Elizabeth "Betsy"
Bennett Gitchell Felton died on May 4, 1874 in Brush Creek (later Arlington),
Fayette Co., Iowa. Children of David Gitchell & Betsy Bennett are Daniel
(1822), Calvin (1824), Nathaniel (1827), Wallace (1830), Esther (1831) David (1833),
Melvina (1835), Louis D. (1837), Betsy (1840) & Mary (1841). Two of their
children married first cousins. First was son Calvin married his cousin Julia
Winne in 1847 in Stephenson Co., IL. Julia was the daughter of Daniel & Maria
(Bennett) Winne. Second was daughter Esther who married David Bennett in 1850
in Stephenson Co., Illinois. David was the son of Benjamin B. & Mary Ann (Armstrong)
Bennett. Notes for Elizabeth "Betsy" Bennett Gitchell Felton
| Maria Bennett | Maria Bennett was born on October 9, 1804 in NY
or NJ. She is listed as Mariah in her father's will, but is listed on all
census records as Maria. Her parents moved to Steuben Co., NY about 1807, and
there is a female the right age to be Maria, age 7, in the household of Jacob
Bennet on the 1810 census of Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY. The town of Howard was
formed from part of Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY in 1812, and there is a female the
right age group to be Maria, age 17, or her sister Betsy, age 18, in the household
of Jacob Bennett on the 1820 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. Maria married
Daniel G. Winne between 1821-1824, probably in Steuben Co., NY, and they
had 7 children. The family is listed on the 1830 census of Bath, Steuben Co.,
NY and on the 1840 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. They moved from New York
to Illinois between 1843-1850, and they are listed on the 1850 census of Ridott,
Stephenson Co., IL. Mariah Winne is listed as a daughter & Daniel B. Winne
is listed as a son-in-law in the will written by Jacob Bennett on January 25,
1851 (probated December 1, 1851). The family is listed on the 1860 & 1870
censuses of Ridott, Stephenson Co., IL. In 1870, Daniel was age 76 & Maria
was age 65. I have not found Daniel or Maria on the 1880 census at this time.
Maria Bennett Winne died sometime after 1870, and probably before 1880 in Ridott,
Stephenson Co., IL. Children of Daniel G. Winne & Maria Bennett are: Julia
(1824), Unknown Daughter #2 (born between 1826-1830), Jerusha (1829), John (1833),
Jacob (1837), Daniel (1840) & Abraham (1843). I believe that the oldest daughter,
Julia Winne (b. 1824), married her cousin Calvin Gitchell in Stephenson Co., IL
in 1847. Calvin was the son of David & Betsy (Bennett) Gitchell. Notes for Maria Bennett Winne
| Asenath Bennett | Asenath Bennett was born about 1805 in NY or NJ.
Her parents moved to Steuben Co., NY about 1807, and there is a female the right
age to be Asenath, age 5, in the household of Jacob Bennet on the 1810 census
of Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY. The town of Howard was formed from part of Canisteo,
Steuben Co., NY in 1812. There is a female the right age group to be Asenath,
age 15, in the household of Jacob Bennett on the 1820 census of Howard, Steuben
Co., NY. Asenath's mother died between 1820-1824, and her father remarried in
1824 when Asenath was about 19. Asenath married Jesse Wells about 1825
and they had at least 8 children. The family is listed on the 1830 census of Stockton,
Chatuaqua Co., NY. I have not found them on the 1840 census at this time, but
based on birthplaces of their children they moved from New York to Illinois sometime
between 1837-1842. Asenath Bennett Wells died in 1844 in Silver Creek, Stephenson
Co., Illinois. Jesse remarried Lovina Everett about 1848, and they
had at least 2 more children. Jesse & Lovina are listed with children from
both his first and second marriages on the 1850 census of Ridott, Stephenson Co.,
IL. Seven of Asenath's children are listed as heirs in the will of Jacob Bennett
that was written in January 25, 1851 & probated December 1, 1851. Children
of Jesse Wells & Asenath Bennett are: Lydia (1827), Haskell (1828), Eunice
(1831), Isaac (1832), Jesse (1834), Rhoda (1835), Harris (1837) & Bennett
(1842). Notes for Asenath Bennett Wells
| John Fletcher Bennett | John W. D. Fletcher Bennett was born about
1811 in Steuben Co., NY. His parents are living in Canisteo, Steuben Co.,
NY in 1810, and the town of Howard was formed from part of Canisteo, Steuben Co.,
NY in 1812. There is a male the right age group to be John, age 9, in the household
of Jacob Bennett on the 1820 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. His mother died
sometime between 1820-1824, and his father remarried Thankful Baker about 1824
when John was age 13. His father was captured by the Indians about 1828 when John
was about age 17, and while captured he remarried an Indian woman named Charlotte
Gitchell. Jacob returned with Charlotte to Steuben Co., NY, and there is a male
the right age group to be John, age 19, in the household of Jacob Bennett on the
1830 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. John married Prudence Baker on
August 24, 1831 in Steuben Co., NY. John married Anna Rose about 1843,
and they had at least one daughter.I don't know if Rose is her middle or maiden
name; she is listed on census records as Anna P. (1850 & 1860), Annie (1870)
& Rose (1880). John W. D. F. Bennet is listed as a son & heir in Jacob
Bennett's will (written on January 25, 1851 & probated December 1, 1851).
John is listed on the 1860, 1870 & 1880 censuses of Hiram, Portage Co., OH.
In 1880 he is living near the household of Maroa Bennett Sperry, widow of his
half-brother Daniel Bennett. I have not found John on the 1900 census at this
time. John W. D. Fletcher Bennett died sometime after 1880, & probably
before 1900 in Hiram, Portage Co., OH. Child of John Fletcher Bennett &
Anna Rose is Rosetta (1844). Rosetta married John Simon Rose, who is probably
a relation (younger brother?) of Maroa Rose Bennett Sperry. Notes for John Fletcher Bennett
| Adeline Bennett | Adeline Bennett was born on June 1,
1811 in Steuben Co., NY. There is a female the right age group to be Adeline,
age 8, in the household of Jacob Bennett on the 1820 census of Howard, Steuben
Co., NY. Her mother died between 1820-1824, and her father remarried Thankful
Baker when Adeline was about age 12. Her father was captured by the Indians about
1828 when Adeline was about age 16, and while captured he remarried an Indian
woman named Charlotte Gitchell about 1829. Jacob returned with Charlotte to Steuben
Co., NY, and there is a female the right age group to be Adeline, age 18, in the
household of Jacob Bennett on the 1830 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. Adeline
married William Nichols on April 20, 1831 in NY and they had 14 children.
I have not found them on the 1840 census at this time, but children born from
1831 to 1841 are all listed on later census records as being born in NY. Based
on birthplaces of their children, the family moved from New York to Michigan sometime
between 1841 to 1847. William & Adeline are listed with their children on
the 1850 & 1860 censuses of Jefferson, Hillsdale Co., MI. Adeline Nichols
is also listed as a daughter & William Nichols is listed as a son-in-law in
the will written by Jacob Bennett on January 25, 1851 (probated December 1, 1851).
An 1876 Atlas of Fulton County, Ohio states that three of William & Adaline's
sons served in the Civil War, and that two of these sons died from wounds received
during the war. The same book also says that William & Adaline Nichols moved
to Fulton Co., OH in 1867, but it also states that their post office was Morenci,
Michigan. A bio of their daughter Julia Nichols Hart in the same book is states
that William Nichols died on January 29, 1862 in Michigan. Adeline is listed at
age 56 as head of household on the 1870 census of South Arm, Charlevoix Co., MI.
I have not found her on the 1880 census at this time. Adeline Bennett Nichols
died sometime after 1870 and probably before 1880 in Michigan or Ohio. Children
of William Nichols & Adeline Bennett are David (1832), Avis (1834), twins
Henry & Hellen (1835), James (1838), Phebe (1840), William C. (1841), Julia
(1842), Philetus (1844), twins Francis & Franklin (1846), Douglas (1848),
Owen (1850) & William (1852). Notes for Adeline Bennett Nichols
| Unknown Son Bennett | Unknown Son Bennett was born about 1815 in Steuben Co., NY. There is a male the right age group to be this son, age 5, in the household of Jacob Bennett on the 1820 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. There is a male the right age group to be this son, age 15, in the household of Jacob Bennett on the 1830 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. This son is not listed as an heir in the will written by Jacob Bennett on January 25, 1851 (probated December 1, 1851), and no grandchildren inherit his portion. Unknown Son Bennett died sometime after 1830 but before 1851, possibly in Steuben Co., NY but that is not for certain. | |
| Jeremiah Bennett | Jeremiah Bennett was born about 1817 in Steuben
Co., NY. There is a male the right age group to be Jeremiah, age 3, in the
household of Jacob Bennett on the 1820 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. There
is a male the right age group to be Jeremiah, age 13, in the household of Jacob
Bennett on the 1830 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. Jeremiah married Anne
Winne on July 18, 1838 in Howard, Steuben Co., NY, and they had at least 2
children. I have not found Jeremiah on the 1840 census at this time. Jeremiah
Bennett died in March 1844 in Fremont, Steuben Co., NY. Anne remarried James
Head on October 26, 1848 in Steuben Co., NY. James was a widower who also
had children from his first marriage, and he and Anne had at least 2 more children.
The family is listed on the 1850 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. Son Harvey
is listed at age 8 with his Winne grandparents in Howard, Steuben Co., NY that
same year. Jeremiah Bennet is listed as being a deceased son, and his sons Lewis
& Harvey are named as inheriting his portion in Jacob Bennett's will (written
on January 25, 1851 & probated December 1, 1851). James & Ann Head are
listed with the children on the 1860 census of Wayland, Steuben Co., NY. They
are listed on the 1870 census of Fremont, Steuben Co., NY. James Head died between
1870 & 1880, and Anne is listed as widowed in the household of her son Garret
on the 1880 census of Howard, Steuben co., NY. Anne Winne Bennett Head died on
May 22, 1889 in Haskinville, Steuben Co., NY. Jeremiah Bennett & Anne are
both buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Haskinville, Steuben Co., New York.
Children of Jeremiah Bennett & Anne Winne are Lewis (1840), & Harvey (1842)
& possibly Esther (1842). Notes for Jeremiah Bennett |
Second marriage:
| Jacob Bennett & Thankful Baker | Jacob Bennett married second Thankful Baker Stephens about 1824, probably in Howard, Steuben Co., NY. Thankful was the widow of Rufus Stephens, and she had at least 3 children from her first marriage. Jacob & Thankful had 2 more children, born in 1825 & 1827. Jacob was captured by the Indians about 1829, and while captured he married a full blooded Mohawk Indian named Charlotte Gitchell and returned with her to Steuben Co., NY by 1830. (The wife in Jacob's household in 1830 is age 30-40, so is Charlotte, age 36, and not Thankful, who would be age 52.) At least one online tree states that Thankful Baker Stephens Bennett did not die until 1867, in Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY, but I have not found her on any records after her last child was born about 1827. Jacob had at least 4 children with Charlotte betwen 1829-1836, and he is listed with Charlotte as his wife on the 1830, 1840 & 1850 censuses of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. |
The Children of Jacob Bennett & Thankful Baker:
| Jacob B. Bennett | Jacob B. Bennett was born about
1825 in Howard, Steuben Co., NY. His father was captured by the Indians about
1828 when Jacob was about age 3, and while captured he remarried an Indian woman
named Charlotte Gitchell. Jacob had a child named Comfort with Charlotte in 1929,
and he had returned with her to Steuben Co., NY by 1830. There are 2 males under
10 in the household of Jacob Bennett on the 1830 census of Howard, Steuben Co.,
NY, who may be Jacob, age 5, Daniel, age 3 and/or Comfort, age 1. There is one
male age 10-15 in Jacob's household in 1840, but I think it is son Comfort, age
10 so I'm not sure where Jacob B.(age 15) & his brother Daniel (age 13) were
that year. It is possible that Jacob went to Chemung County (with or without his
mother Thankful) after his father Jacob returned from the Indians with third wife
Charlotte, and since he is not with Jacob in 1840 he could have been in Chemung
County with Thankful or another family. There is a Jacob Bennet of Big Flats,
Chemung Co., NY who married Miss Jane Clark of Catlin on Feb. 17, 1842
in Chemung Co., NY, and at least one site says they moved to Steuben Co., NY soon
after the marriage when Jane was age 19 (about 1843). I have not found Jacob,
Jane or Jacob's mother Thankful in 1850, and Jacob should be on there somewhere
because Jacob B. Bennett is listed as a son & heir in Jacob Bennett's will
(written on January 25, 1851 & probated December 1, 1851), and he is also
listed on Susan Rockwell Austin's online tree as living in Howard, Steuben Co.,
NY in 1852. Jacob's brother Daniel is listed on the 1850 census of Howard, Steuben
Co., NY. Jacob B. Bennett probably died sometime after 1852, possibly in Steuben
Co., NY but that is not for sure. I do not know of any children of Jacob B.
Bennett. Notes for Jacob B. Bennett
| Daniel Bennett | Daniel Bennett was born about 1827 in Steuben Co.,
NY. His father was captured by the Indians about 1828 when Daniel was about
age 1, and while captured he remarried an Indian woman named Charlotte Gitchell.
Jacob had a child named Comfort with Charlotte in 1929, and he had returned with
her to Steuben Co., NY by 1830. There are 2 males under 10 in the household of
Jacob Bennett on the 1830 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY, who may be Jacob,
age 5, Daniel, age 3 and/or Comfort, age 1. There is one male age 10-15 in Jacob's
household in 1840, but I think it is son Comfort, age 10 so I'm not sure where
Daniel (age 13) & his brother Jacob B. (age 15) were that year. Daniel married
Maroa Rose about 1846 in probably Steuben Co., NY, and they had 6 children.
The family is listed on the 1850 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. Based on birth
places of the children, the family moved from New York to Ohio between 1850-1853.
A biography of son-in-law Benjamin Taylor (married daughter Ida) states that Maroa
Rose Bennett was born in Geauga Co., OH, and that is where the family went. Daniel
Bennet is listed as a son & heir in Jacob Bennett's will (written on January
25, 1851 & probated December 1, 1851). Daniel Bennett died in 1858 in Troy,
Geauga Co., OH. Maroa is listed as head of household with the children on
the 1860 census of Troy, Geauga Co., Ohio. Maroa remarried Leman Sperry sometime
between 1860 & 1868. It was the third marriage for Leman, and he had at least
1 grown daughter from his first marriage. Leman Sperry died on June 25, 1868 in
Burton, Geauga Co., OH. Maroa is listed with the children twice on the 1870 census
of Troy, Geauga Co., OH, once as Maroa Bennet and once as Maria Sperry. Maroa
moved from Geauga to Portage Co., Ohio sometime between 1870-1880, and she is
listed on the 1880, 1900 & 1910 censuses of Hiram, Portage Co., OH, living
with or near the household of married son Charles. In 1910 she was age 86 &
widowed. I do not find her on the 1920 census at this time, and believe that Maroa
Rose Bennett Sperry died between 1910-1920 in Hiram, Portage Co., Ohio. Children
of Daniel Bennett & Meroa Rose are: Twins Lester & Levi (1847), Ella (1850),
Charles (1853) & twins Ida & Watson (1857). Notes for Daniel Bennett |
Third marriage:
| Jacob Bennett & Charlotte Gitchell | Jacob Bennett married third Charlotte Gitchell/Getchell about 1828. Several online sources state that Charlotte was a full blooded Mohawk Indian, although there were Gitchell/Getchell families that lived in the same areas as the Bennetts, and one of Jacob's daughters from his first marriage married David L. Gitchell. Bea Daggett states on her website that Jacob was captured by the Indians and married Charlotte at that time. Jacob & Charlotte had at least 4 more children, born between 1829-1836. The family is listed on the 1830, 1840 & 1850 censuses of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. The 1850 census lists Jacob's birth place as NJ. Jacob wrote his will on January 15, 1851, in which he named Charlotte as his wife, and also named as his heirs 15 children, 3 son-in-laws, 12 grandchildren, 3 husbands of his granddaughters, and a niece. Jacob Bennett died on December 1, 1851 in Howard, Steuben Co., NY. He was age 79 when he died. Charlotte is listed at age 67 on the 1860 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY in the household of her married daughter Nancy Mesick. I have not found her on the 1870 census at this time. Charlotte died April 20, 1877. Jacob & Charlotte are both buried in the Howard/Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Howard, Steuben Co., NY. |
The Children of Jacob Bennett & Charlotte Gitchell/Getchell:
| Comfort Bennett | Comfort Bennett was born about 1829, probably in
Howard, Steuben Co., NY. There are 2 males under 10 in the household of Jacob
Bennett in 1830, who may be Jacob, age 5, Daniel, age 3 and/or Comfort, age 1.
There is a male the right age group to be Comfort, age 10, in the household of
Jacob Bennett on the 1840 census of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. Comfort Bennet is
listed as age 21, Farmer, in the household of Solon Ingalls on the 1850 census
of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. Comfort Bennet is listed as a son & heir in Jacob
Bennett's will (written on January 25, 1851 & probated December 1, 1851).
Comfort emigrated from New York to Ohio sometime between 1850-1860. There is a
Comfort Bennett, Farmer, age 30, born NY, who is listed in the household of Cyrus
Rider on the 1860 census of Hiram, Portage Co., OH who is probably this Comfort.
Comfort served in the Union Army in the Civil War, enlisting at age 32 as a Private
on Sept 20, 1861 in Company A, 42nd Infantry Regiment, Ohio. Comfort Bennett
died on March 14, 1862 in Ashland, Kentucky while serving in the Civil War.
He is listed as being honored with "Distinguished Service" in the American
Civil War Records on www.ancestry.com. Notes for Comfort Bennett
| Nancy Bennett | Nancy Bennett was born in February 1833, probably
in Howard, Steuben Co., NY. There is a female the right age group to be Nancy,
age 7, in the household of Jacob Bennett on the 1840 census of Howard, Steuben
Co., NY. She is listed as Nancy, age 17, with her parents on the 1850 census of
Howard, Steuben Co., NY. Nancy Bennet is listed as a daughter & heir in Jacob
Bennett's will (written on January 25, 1851 & probated December 1, 1851).
Nancy married Sidney Mesick about 1852, probably in Steuben Co., NY, and
they had at least 7 children. The family is listed on the 1860, 1870 & 1880
censuses of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. In 1860, Nancy's widowed mother Charlotte
is living with them, and they are listed next to the household of Nancy's half-brother
Benjamin B. Bennett. Information posted on line indicates that Sidney Mesick died
on June 26, 1885, but he is listed as a farmer in the 1891 Steuben Co., NY Directory.
Sidney did die sometime between 1880-1900, and Nancy is listed as widowed, age
67, in the household of her married son Charles on the 1900 census of Howard,
Steuben Co., NY. I have not found Nancy on the 1910 census at this time. Nancy
Bennett Mesick died after 1900 and possibly before 1910, probably in Steuben Co.,
NY. Children of Sidney Mesick & Nancy Bennett are: Charles (1853), Ella
(1855), Ada (1857), Florence (1859), Etta (1863), Ange (1865) & Jennie (1869). Notes for Nancy Bennett Mesick
| Philip P. Bennett | Philip P. Bennett was born in 1835, probably
in Howard, Steuben Co., NY. There is a male the right age group to be Phillip,
age 5, in the household of Jacob Bennett on the 1840 census of Howard, Steuben
Co., NY. He is listed as Philip, age 15, with his parents on the 1850 census of
Howard, Steuben Co., NY. Philip P. Bennett is listed as a son & heir in Jacob
Bennett's will (written on January 25, 1851 & probated December 1, 1851).
Phillip married Maria E. Rose between 1850-1860, probably in Steuben Co.,
NY. Phillip & Maria are listed on the 1860 & 1870 censuses of Howard,
Steuben Co., NY. In 1860 Maria's father, Samuel Rose, age 68, is living with them.
Maria died or they separated, and Phillip married second Julia Emma Randall,
sometime between 1870-1880. Phillip & Emma are listed on the 1880 census of
Fremont, Steuben Co., NY in the household of her parents Samuel & Alida Randall.
I have not found any known children for Phillip from either of his marriages,
and have also not found him on any census record after 1880, although at least
one online tree indicates that he died after 1925. Phillip P. Bennett died
sometime after 1880, probably in Steuben Co., NY. Notes for Phillip P. Bennett
| Deborah Bennett | Deborah Bennett was born on June 18, 1836, probably
in Howard, Steuben Co., NY. There is a female the right age group to be Deborah,
age 3, in the household of Jacob Bennett on the 1840 census of Howard, Steuben
Co., NY. She is listed as Deborah, age 13, with her parents on the 1850 census
of Howard, Steuben Co., NY. Deborah Bennet is listed as a daughter & heir
in Jacob Bennett's will (written on January 25, 1851 & probated December 1,
1851). Deborah married William H. Freelove sometime between 1852-1856,
probably in Steuben Co., NY. Deborah Bennett Freelove died on March 21, 1856
in Howard, Steuben Co., NY. Deborah is buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery,
Howard, Steuben Co., NY. William H. Freelove (born abt 1823) is listed on the
1860 & 1870 censuses of Howard, Steuben Co., NY with wife Sarah (born abt
1833) and 3 children born after 1858. They also raised a daughter Joannah, born
about 1851 in New York who is possibly a daughter of William & Deborah, but
she is listed on the 1860 census as being named Joannah Shoules so I do not think
that she was Deborah's daughter. Notes for Deborah Bennett Freelove |
