Cornelius
Hopper was born Feb. 8, 1756 in Clarkston, Rockland Co., NY. He was the son of
Mattheus Hopper & Aeltje Kuyper. Aeltje's name is sometimes listed
as Elsie Cooper.
Hannah Rockwell was born October 6, 1760 in Ridgefield, Fairfield
Co., CT. She was the daughter of Jonathan
Rockwell & Hannah Bennett. (Hannah was a sister or first cousin
of Abraham Bennett).
THE FAMILY OF CORNELIUS HOPPER & HANNAH ROCKWELL
| Cornelius Hopper & Hannah Rockwell | Cornelius Hopper &
Hannah Rockwell were married on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1777 in Tappan, Rockland
Co. New York, and records indicate that they had 13 children. There is a family
headed by Cornelius Hopper on the 1790 census of Luzerne Co,. PA that has numbers
that fit this family. They are listed on the 1800 census of Newtown, Tioga Co.,
NY, and on the 1810 census of Elmira, Tioga Co., NY. Cornelius Hopper died
on February 21, 1814 in Belfast, Allegany Co., NY. Hannah is possibly the
female over age 45 living with married daughter Hannah (Abraham) Minier on the
1820 census of Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY. I have not found Hannah on the 1830
census at this time. Hannah Rockwell Hopper died on April 07, 1839 in Milport,
Tioga Co., NY. |
The Children of Cornelius Hopper & Hannah Rockwell:
| Matthew Hopper | Matthew Hopper was born December 17, 1778 in New York. He died when he was less than a year old. Matthew Hopper died in on January 4, 1779, probably in New York. | |
| Hannah Hopper | Hannah Hopper was born July 24, 1780 in Orange
Co., NY. There is a female who could be Hannah, age 9, in the household of
Cornelius Hopper on the 1790 census of Luzerne, PA. There is a female the right
age group to be Hannah, age 19, in the household of Cornelius Hopper on the 1800
census of Newtown, Tioga Co., NY. Hannah married Abraham Minier in 1803
and they had 8 children. A history of Big Flats, Chemung Co,. PA, states that
they lived at Big Flats until 1808, when they moved to Canisteo, Steuben Co.,
NY, along with the family of Cornelius' brother Henry. Abraham Minier is listed
as a head of household on the 1810 & 1820 censuses of Canisteo, Steuben Co.,
NY. They returned to Big Flats about 1820. Abraham was killed by a falling tree
on June 26, 1827 in Big Flats. He was age 45 when he died. Hannah Minier is listed
as head of household on the 1830 & 1840 censuses of Big Flats, Tioga (became
Chemung in 1836) Co., NY. Hannah Hopper Minier died on December 14, 1842 in
Big Flats, Chemung Co., NY. Abraham & Hannah are buried in an old cemetery
on Sing Sing Road. Their son Samuel married Telina Bennett, whose grandparents
were Abraham Bennett & Jerusha Wanzer.
Samuel was a Sheriff in Big Flats and held several public offices. Children of
Abraham Minier & Hannah Hopper are Samuel (1804), Christiana (1806), Henry
"Harry" (1808), Ira, (1810), Matthew (1812), Anna (1814), Christian
(1818) & William Stephens (1823). Notes for Hannah Hopper Minier
| Olive Hopper | Olive Hopper was born on July 25, 1782
in Orange Co., NY. Some online trees list her birth as July 25, 1778 in Litchfield,
Litchfield, Connecticut, but all of the census records are consistent with her
being born in 1782 or 1783, and the 1850 & 1860 censuses both list her birthplace
as New York. There is a female who could be Olive, age 8, in the household of
Cornelius Hopper on the 1790 census of Luzerne, PA. Olive married Green Bentley
about 1800, and they had at least 9 children. I have not found them on the 1800
census at this time, but there is only one female age 16-25 in Cornelius Hopper's
household that year, and it is probably Olive's sister Hannah, who didn't marry
until 1803. Green Bentley Jr's household is listed on the 1810 & 1820 censuses
of Catherine, Tioga, Co., NY. Green died on November 11, 1820 in Millport, Tioga
Co., NY. Olive married second Oliver Greeno about 1823. Oliver was a widower
with 6 children from his first marriage, and Oliver and Olive also had at least
2 children. They are listed on the 1830, 1840, 1850 & 1860 censuses of Veteran,
Tioga (became Chemung) Co., NY. Olive Hopper Bentley Greeno died on November
14, 1862, probably in Veteran, Chemung Co., NY. Oliver Greeno was married
for a third time to Ann Mallet in 1863. Children of Green Bentley & Oliver
Hopper are George (1801), Ezekiel (1802), Rockwell (1803), James (1804), William
(1806), Esther (1810), Eunice (1812), Elisha (1813) & Margaret (1818). Children
of Oliver Greeno & Olive Hopper are Layton (1824) & Polly (1827).
| Esther Hopper | Esther Hopper was born September 01,
1784 in Tioga (later Chemung) Co., NY. There is a female who could be Esther,
age 5, in the household of Cornelius Hopper on the 1790 census of Luzerne, PA.
There is a female the right age group to be Esther, age 15, in the household of
Cornelius Hopper on the 1800 census of Newtown, Tioga Co., NY. Esther married.
Elisha Moore about 1802 in NY or PA, and they had at least 10 children.
From birthplaces of their children, they were in Pennsylvania in 1806 & 1808
but in New York in 1810. Elisha was baptised on May 26, 1810 at the Baptist Church
of Chemung, located near Wellsburg, NY. There is a family headed by Elijah Moore
with numbers that would fit this family on the 1810 census of Spencer, Tioga Co.,
NY. Elisha was dismissed by letter from the Baptist Church of Chemung on July
2, 1814. The family is listed on the 1820 census of Catharine, Tioga Co., NY.
They returned to the Baptist Church in Chemung at some time, because they were
given a second letter of dismissal from the church in June 1828. They are listed
on the 1830 census of Veteran, Tioga Co., NY. Chemung County was formed from part
of Tioga County in 1836, and Elisha is listed with his family on the 1840 &
1850 censuses of Veteran, Chemung Co., NY. Elisha Moore died on May 9, 1860
in Veteran, Chemung Co., NY. There is an Esther who is listed as age 71 with
her son Asa and daughter Dolly on the 1860 census of Veteran, Chemung Co., NY
who may be this Esther, although she should be age 75. As Asa has a wife named
Esther who is age 31 on the 1870 census, it could also be the wife, age 21 in
1860. Esther Hopper Moore died on April 6, 1865 in Veteran, Chemung Co., NY.
Elisha & Esther are buried in the Newton Cemetery, Veteran, Chemung Co.,
NY, along with some of their children. Children of Elisha Moore & Esther Hopper
are: Unknown Son (1801-1810), Rockwell (1806), Dolly (1808), Mary Ann (1810),
Asa (1812), Unknown Daughter (1813-1820), Lucinda (1822), Cornelius (1823), Hannah
(1824) & Philena (1826). Esther's daughter Mary Ann Moore married John
Brees, whose mother Deborah Bennett Brees was a first or second cousin of
Esther's mother Hannah Rockwell Hopper. The Family of Elisha Moore & Esther Hopper Notes for Esther Hopper
| Mary Hopper | Mary Hopper was born August 24, 1787 in Tioga (later
Chemung) Co., NY. There is a female who could be Mary, age 3, in the household
of Cornelius Hopper on the 1790 census of Luzerne, PA. There is a female the right
age group to be Mary, age 13, in the household of Cornelius Hopper on the 1800
census of Newtown, Tioga Co., NY. Mary Hopper probably married between 1803-1810.
Information from online trees indicates that Mary married a Mr. Owens.
I have seen at least one source that lists his first name as Frederick, but have
not found any other records to confirm this. There is a record in the Wellsburg
(Chemung Co.), Baptist Church on February 6, 1813 that Sister Mary Owens had been
granted a letter of Dismission to join another Baptist church. I have not found
an Owens family I think is them on any census records. Online trees also indicate
that Mary Hopper Owens died on March 16, 1854, but I have not found her
on the 1850 census at this time. I have not other information about her, and would
welcome input on this family. Notes for Mary Hopper Owens
| Anna Hopper | Anna Hopper was born on November 06, 1789 in Tioga
(later Chemung) Co., NY. There is a female who could be Anna, age 1, in the
household of Cornelius Hopper on the 1790 census of Luzerne, PA She is possibly
the unknown female under age 10 in the household of Cornelius Hopper 1800 census
of Newtown, Tioga Co., NY, although she should have been age 10 at thei time -
there are 2 daughters in the household age 10-16, but I think they are Esther,
age 15, & Mary, age 13. There is a female the right age group to be Anna,
age 20, in the household of Cornelius Hopper on the on the 1810 census of Elmira,
Tioga Co., NY. Anna married Elijah Reynolds about 1811, probably in New
York, and they had at least 7 children. The family is listed on the 1820 census
of Caneadea, Allegany Co, NY. The town of Belfast was formed from part of Canedea
in 1824, and Elijah Reynolds held the postion of Town Clerk in Belfast in 1824,
1825 & 1826. Elijah & Anna are listed with their family on the 1830, 1850,
& 1860 censuses of Belfast, Allegany Co., NY. In 1850 Elijah's occupation
is listed as Farmer, and in 1860 it is listed as Constable. Elijah died on June
20, 1862. Anna Hopper Reynolds died on March 15, 1864, probably in Belfast,
Allegany Co., NY. Elijah & Anna are buried in the Chamberlain Cemetery,
Belfast, Allegany Co., NY. Children of Anna Hopper & Elijah Reynolds are:
George (1812), Cornelius (1820), Adaline (1823), Unknown Daughter (1826-1830),
Unknown Son (1826-1830), Caroline (1827) & Jane. Notes for Anna Hopper Reynolds
| Rockwell Hopper | Rockwell Hopper was born April 30, 1792 in Tioga
(later Chemung) Co., NY. There is a male the right age group to be Rockwell,
age 8, in the household of Cornelius Hopper on the 1800 census of Newtown, Tioga
Co., NY. There is a male the right age group to be Rockwell, age 18, in the household
of Cornelius Hopper on the 1810 census of Elmira, Tioga Co., NY. Rockwell married
Elizabeth Comfort on October 26, 1811 in Wellsburg, Tioga (later Chemung)
Co., NY, and they had 8 children. The family is listed on the 1820 census of Rushford,
Allegany Co., NY. They are listed on the 1830, 1840, 1850 & 1860 censuses
of Belfast, Allegany Co., NY. Elizabeth Comfort Hopper died on August 16, 1865,
and Rockwell is listed at age 78 in the household of his married son Edward/Edwin.
Rockwell Hopper died on May 20, 1875 in Belfast, Allegany Co., NY. Children
of Rockwell Hopper & Elizabeth Comfort are: Lovina (1812), Cornelius (1814),
Edward (1817), Hannah (1818), Christina (1823), Alfred Rockwell (1826), Emma (1830)
& Charles (1835). Notes for Rockwell Hopper
| Amy Hopper | Amy Hopper was born September 29, 1794 probably
in Tioga, (later Chemung) Co., NY, although at least one online tree as her
birthplace listed as Angelica, Alleghany Co., NY. There is a female the right
age group to be Amy, age 6, in the household of Cornelius Hopper on the 1800 census
of Newtown, Tioga Co., NY. There is a female the right age group to be Amy, age
16, in the household of Cornelius Hopper on the 1810 census of Elmira, Tioga Co.,
NY. Her father Cornelius died on February 21, 1814, when Amy was age 19. Amy married
Elias Stephens/Stevens on Christmas Day, Dec 25, 1816, in NY, and they
had 7 children. The family is listed on the 1820, 1830, 1840 & 1850 censuses
of Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY. Elias' occupation is listed as Farmer. Amy Hopper
Stephens/Stevens died on October 9, 1859 in Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY. Elias
is listed on the 1860 & 1870 censuses of Canisteo, Steuben Co, NY, and he
died there on April 12, 1878. Children of Elias Stephens & Amy Hopper are:
Abraham Minier (1817), Fanny (1819), Christina (1822), Hannah (1827), Archibald
(1830, Adah (1832) & Samuel Olin (1839). Notes for Amy Hopper Stephens/Stevens
| Margaret Hopper | Margaret Hopper was born March 11, 1797 in Tioga
(later Chemung) Co., NY. There is a female the right age group to be Margaret,
age 3, in the household of Cornelius Hopper on the 1800 census of Newtown, Tioga
Co., NY. There is a female the right age group to be Margaret, age 13, in the
household of Cornelius Hopper on the 1810 census of Elmira, Tioga Co., NY. Her
father Cornelius died on February 21, 1814, when Margaret was age 16. I have not
found Margaret on the 1820 census at this time. Margaret married Nathaniel
Sanford sometime between 1820-1829, probably in New York. Nathaniel is listed
as Ephraim Sanford on the IGI, but he is listed as Nathaniel on the only
record I have found for him. I have not found the family on the 1830 or 1840 censuses
at this time, but based on birthplaces of the children they were in New York through
at least 1840. The family moved from New York to Wisconsin sometime between 1840-1850,
possibly traveling with Margaret's brother Ira Hopper who emigratd to Wisconsin
between 1843-1847. They are listed as Nathaniel & Margret Sanford on the 1850
census of Hebron, Jefferson Co., Wisconsin. At that time there is a daughter,
Melissa Sanford, born about 1821 in the household, and then 3 more Sanford children
born 1831-1840, all in NY. There is also an Ebenezer Hubbard, born about 1821
in NY, who may be an unrelated farm laborer, but he could alaso be a son of Margaret's
by a previous marriage (which would indicate that Melissa is a daughter of Nathaniel's
by a previous marriage). More research is need on this family. Nathaniel Sanford
died between 1850-1860, probably in Wisconsin. Margaret is listed as head of household
on the 1860 census of Kickapoo, Bad Ax Co., WI. I have not found her in 1870 at
this time. Margaret Hopper Sanford died sometime after 1860 and possibly before
1870 in Wisconsin. Children on Nathaniel (Ephraim?) Sanford & Margaret
Hopper are: Melissa? (1821), Ephraim (1830), Ira (1837) & David (1840). Notes for Margaret Hopper Sanford
| Ira Hopper | Ira Hopper was born February 01, 1799 in Tioga (later
Chemung) Co., NY. There is a male the right age group to be Ira, age 1, in
the household of Cornelius Hopper on the 1800 census of Newtown, Tioga Co., NY.
There is a male the right age group to be Ira, age 11, in the household of Cornelius
Hopper on the 1810 census of Elmira, Tioga Co., NY. His father Cornelius died
on February 21, 1814, when Ira was age 15. I have not found Ira on the 1820 census
at this time. Ira married Nancy McIntosh between 1820-1824, probably in
Allegany Co., NY, and they had 8 children. They are listed on the 1830 census
of Grove, Allegany Co., NY, living near Ira's married sister Fanny (Willliam)
Spencer. Ira and family are listed on the 1840 census of Caneadea, Allegany Co.,
NY. Based on birthplaces of their children, the family moved from New York to
Wisconsin between 1843-1847. They are listed on the 1850, 1855 & 1860 censuses
of Cold Spring, Jefferson Co., WI. Ira Hopper died between 1870-1880, probably
in Cold Spring or Palmyra, Jefferson Co., Wisconsin. Nancy is listed as head
of household on the 1870 census, and as widowed and living in the household of
her married son John Wesley Hopper in 1880, both in Palmyra, Jefferson Co., Wisconsin.
Children of Ira Hopper & Nancy are: Unknown Daughter (1821-1825), Unknown
Daughter (1826-1830), John Wesley (1830), Unknown Son (1831-1840), Daniel (1835),
William (1838), Andrew (1842) & Hellen (1848). Notes for Ira Hopper
| Elizabeth Hopper | Elizabeth Hopper was born June 06, 1801 in Tioga
(later Chemung) Co., NY. There is a female the right age group to be Elizabeth,
age 9, in the household of Cornelius Hopper on the 1810 census of Elmira, Tioga
Co., NY. Her father Cornelius died on February 21, 1814, when Elizabeth was age
13. Elizabeth married William Tryon Churchill on January 15, 1820 in Tioga
Co., NY, and they had 6 children. They are listed on the 1820 census of Caroline,
Tioga Co., NY, and Elizabeth's sister Fanny was possibly living with them at that
time. Based on birthplaces of their children, the family moved from Tioga Co.,
New York to Tioga Co., Pennsylvania about 1824. William Churchill died in 1832
in Tioga Co., PA. At the time of his death, Elizabeth had 5 children under the
age of 11, and she was pregnant with their sixth child, who was born in February
1833. Elizabeth was remarried to Mr. Van Pelt between 1833-1835, and they
had at least one daughter. The only Van Pelt household in Tioga Co., PA in 1840
is headed by Jacob Vanpelt, in Elkland, Tioga Co., PA. There is a female in the
household who could be Elizabeth, age 50 (should be 49), but the oldest male in
the household is age 20-29 so she may be widowed and Jacob may be a son of Mr.
Van Pelt's from a previous marriage. Elizabeth was married for the third time
to Joseph Neal about 1840, and they had 3 children. The family is listed
on the 1850 census of Elkland, Tioga Co., PA. Joseph died between 1850-1860, and
Elizabeth is listed on the 1860 & 1870 censuses of Charleston, Tioga Co.,
PA. In 1860 she is head of household, and in 1870 she is living with her son John
J. Neal. Elizabeth Hopper Churchill VanPelt Neal died sometime between 1870-1887,
probably in Tioga Co., PA. Some online trees list her date of death as 1887,
but I have not found Elizabeth on the 1880 census at this time. Children of Elizabeth
Hopper & William Tryon Churchill are: Unknown Daughter (1820), John (1821),
Olive (1823), Ruth (1825), Esther (1827), Elisha (1829) & William (1833).
Children of Elizabeth Hopper & Van Pelt are: Sarah (1836). Children of Elizabeth
Hopper & Joseph Neal are: John (1840), Mary (1843) & Ann (1848). Notes for Elizabeth Hopper Churchill VanPelt Neal
| Tarry (Fanny) Hopper was born October 02,
1804 in Tioga (later Chemung) Co., NY. Thre is some confusion as to her first
name; on the 1850 census her name is definitely Fanny, but on the 1860 it looks
like Fany or Tarry, and in 1870 & 1880 it is definitely Tarry. (Her
descendants that I have been in contact with also refer to her as Tarry.) There
is a female the right age group to be Tarry, age 6, in the household of Cornelius
Hopper on the 1810 census of Elmira, Tioga Co., NY. Her father Cornelius died
on February 21, 1814, when Tarry was age 9. There is a female who could be Tarry,
age 16, in the household of her newly married sister Elizabeth (William) Churchill
on the 1820 census of Caroline, Tioga Co., NY. Tarry married William R. Spencer
on March 24, 1825, probably in Allegany Co., NY, and they had at least one daughter
named Nancy. William's occupation was Carpenter/Joiner/Builder. They are listed
on the 1830 census of Grove, Allegany Co., NY, living near Tarry's brother Ira
Hopper. I believe I find them on the 1840 census of Nunda, Allegany Co., NY. They
are listed on the 1850 census of Caneadea, Allegany Co., NY. William & Tarry
moved from New York to Barry Co., Michigan sometime beetween 1853 to 1859. Based
on birthplaces of their children, they moved from Michigan to Wisconsin by 1860.
Tarry's sister Margaret & brother Ira had already emigrated with their families
to Wisconsin in the 1840's. William & Fanny/Tarry are listed on the 1860 census
of Pulaski, Iowa Co., WI. They are listed on the 1870 & 1880 censuses of Avoca,
Iowa Co., WI. William died on April 4, 1883, in Avoca, Iowa Co., WI. Tarry
(Fanny) Hopper Spencer died on Sept 3, 1889 in Avoca, Iowa Co., Wisconsin.
Child of William R. Spencer & Fanny/Tarry Hopper is: Nancy Manilla (1826).
Thanks to Betty Hampton for the photo of Tarry. Notes for Tarry (Fanny) Hopper Spencer
| Unknown Son Hopper | Unknown Son Hopper was born between 1800-1810 in Tioga (later Chemung) Co., NY. There is a male the right age group to be this unknown son, age 0-9, in the household of Cornelius Hopper on the 1810 census of Elmira, Tioga Co., NY. His father Cornelius died on February 21, 1814, when this son would have been between age 4-13. I have not found any other records for this son. Unknown Son Hopper died sometime after 1810, but I don't know when or where. |
