INFORMATION FROM BURKETT-GREEN-WOODROME BOOK by Mina Mae Woodrome:
Little information is available on Little Berry Green's parents. Quoted is a letter from Aunt Rosa (Mary Ann Rosanna Green Rae, Little Berry Green's oldest child) to my [Mina Mae Woodrome] mother:
"Dear Sister Maggie:
Our grandfather's name was David Green. Grandmother's name was Tabitha. I do not know what her maiden name was. I do know she was of Scotch descent and very wealthy. Daddy's father was an Irish gambler - - therefore her wealth went.
Daddy had only one full brother. His name was Burton. I have his razor. He had six half-brothers. His father was a widower when he married Mrs. Tabitha Randal, who was a widow with one girl. They were married in Shelbyville, Tennessee.
Father, Little Berry Green, was born in Shelbyville on July 13, 1834. He died December 5, 1900. Mother, Sarah Ann Burkett, was born October 20, 1840 at Hochheim, Texas. She died December 17, 1919 at Burkett, Texas. Father and Mother met and were married at Gonzales, Texas, on July 12, 1855, by the Rev. Thomas Pilgrim, a Baptist Minister. Mother told me this.
Aunt Rosanna Randle was the lady I was named for. She and Uncle Burton came to Texas with daddy. Daddy was a carpenter and made lots of money in those days. Aunt Rosanna met and married Captian Gus Jones. They went to the old Jones homestead and had four children: James, 1st; Will, 2nd; Sophy, 3rd; and Charlie, 4th. Aunt Rosanna took pneumonia when Charlie was 8 days old and died. Grandmother mostly raised the children.
Now, dear sister, I hope I have made this plain.
               With Love,
               Rosanna."

James Alexander Braud was born on 13 January 1848 at New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the son of Victorin Braud and Sara Antoridge. On 13 July 1885, at age 37, James Alexander Braud married Margaret Mahala Green, age 17, daughter of Little Berry Green and Sarah Ann Burkett. James Alexander Braud died on 8 November 1888 at age 40. He was buried at Hochheim Cemetery, DeWitt County, Texas.

      From Mina Mae Woodrome:
James Alexander Braud was born in the City of New Orleans on Triton Walk on January 13, 1848. His father was Victorin Braud, a native of the Parish of St. John, Louisiana. His mother was Sarah Autoridge (Antoridge), a native of New Orleans.

At the New Orleans Historical Collection Library, I learned that the name of Triton Walk had been changed to Fulton Walk, later to Delord Street, and it is now Howard Avenue. Triton Walk was located in District I and was in the American Sector.

At a branch of the Louisiana Historical Library, New Orleans, I found old City Directories. In the 1851 Directory, V. Braud lived at 18 Triton. He was not listed in the 1852 Directory. In the 1853 Directory: V. Braud, grocer, 18 Triton Walk; dwells 115 St. Joseph. I did not find the family listed in later Directories. Elbie remembers that when she was quite small mama took her to New Orleans to visit the family. At that time V. Braud had a cigar-making business.

At both libraries I tried to find names of Jim Braud's brothers and sisters but did not find any. In the list of Louisiana Soldiers in the War of 1812, a number of Braud's were listed; one was Vy. Braud.

There is no information on how or why Jim Braud came to Texas and to the Hochheim Community. One Sunday when he went to church, he was impressed with the beauty and voice of a pretty girl singing in the choir. He stared at her until she was embarrassed. He arranged to meet her - Margaret Mahala Green. He courted her and they married July 13, 1885. Elder L.A. Hays performed the ceremony. Witnesses: J.L. Crawford and H. Alsup. Marriage Record No. 2373, DeWitt County, Tex. She was 17, he was 34.

They lived on the Green farm. Braud was a music teacher. He taught "singing" (voice) and piano. He had a melodeon made of solid walnut with hand-carved legs. The crosspiece was removable. The legs could be folded, the instrument wrapped, placed on the back of his buggy and went through the country giving lessons. Many times he took his pretty wife with him.

The melodeon was in the upstairs hall of our home in Yoakum for many years. The works were gone but some of the keys were still there. In 1929 I had it made into a spinet desk. Most remarkable thing was that with all the years of use and disusse there was only one small scar on it when it was refinished. It was last in the possession of John Paul Ebner, a grandson.

At the time of the San Francisco earthquake he was placed on guard duty with orders to "shoot to kill" anyone who was looting. Nell had eight sisters and one brother. Her mother reared another girl, who became a nurse. Nell is Irish.

INFORMATION FROM BURKETT-GREEN-WOODROME BOOK (Page 50-51):
Her name was Sarah Elizabeth, Mama called her "Lizzie Bell". Her husband called her "Lizzie". Nieces and nephews called her "Aunt Beth". We called her "Sister" - she truly was our "big sister".

Sister looked so much like mama it was startling. She had a beautiful complexion, medium brown hair, blue eyes. She had a sweet voice. Many times I've heard her sing "Why Did I Pick A Lemon in the Garden of Love Where They Say Only Peaches Grow?"; others were "Molly Malone" and "Red Wing". She could whistle.

Daughters of friends and daughters of our family who lived in Terryville stayed in our home to attend school as the country school did not teach all grades. Sister enjoyed having these school companions about. They were lively, mischievous, fun-making girls. Mama would tell the girls to have Elbie (Little Bee) say her prayers when they put her to bed. This is what they taught her:
"Now I lay me down to sleep
          Upon my little bed
If I should die before I wake
How will I know I'm dead?"

On April 23, 1911 she married William Bernard Ebner. Mollie (Mary Eudora Woodrome) and her husband, Ernest L. Dickinson were witnesses at the marriage ceremony. Here is the account as it appeared in the YOAKUM HERALD, Yoakum, Texas:

          EBNER-BRAUD
About four o'clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. Father J. Sheehan of the Catholic Church pronounced the words that joined forever the hands and hearts of Mr. W.B. Ebner and Miss Lizzie Braud, both of this city. The ceremony occurred at the priest's home near the Catholic Church in the presence of a small number of intimate friends of the contracting parties.

The bride is the daughter of Mrs. G.H. Woodrome and has been reared in this city. She is possessed of so many lovable traits and graces of character that she rarely fails to form friends of all acquaintances. For the past two or three years she has been one of the efficient salesladies at the Lyons Store and only a couple of weeks ago did she resign this position and then only to attend to the preliminaries incident to the happy event which was so auspiciously consumated yesterday afternoon.

The groom is a native of Lavaca County, having been reared in the Koerth community. His vocation for a number of years has been that of teacher. He quit this profession a few months since to accept a position at the C. Dees Mercantile Company's store. Mr. Ebner is one of our finest and most solid young men and starts out in the married life under conditions that give every promise of a successful career.

The happy couple will set up housekeeping right away in a handsome cottage home they have had erected in the northwestern part of the city.

The HERALD joins their hosts of friends in wishing for them that they may ever have fair seas o'er which to sail their matrimonial craft.
          -----------------
They lived in Yoakum for several years. One son was born here. Then they moved to Sweet Home, about seven miles from Yoakum, where Will had the general store and post office. Four sons were born here.

Elbie taught school in Sweet Home about five years and stayed with Sister and Will. She and I did a lot of baby-sitting. There was always a large garden, chickens, hogs and cows. And with the grocery business there was an abundance of food but it seemed Sister cooked all the time "as the boys had no bottom - - they ate all the time".

About 1925 they moved to Agua Dulce, Texas.

In February 1964 grave stones for Edmund Bee, Eliza Jane and William Carney Bazil Woodrome were moved from the Hollan Cemetery to the County Line Cemetery. The stones are set in concrete with a marker stating burial had been in the Hollan Cemetery, which is in a fenced-off densely wooded area on the Raetzsch Wagener Ranch near Terryville, Texas.

Edmund Bee Woodrome came with his parents from Illinois to Arkansas. They first lived in Pine Bluff and later in Lawrence County.

He was of dark complexion, with black hair and brown eyes, 5 feet 10 inches tall. He was honest, sober, never known to use profane or slang words and never belonged to a church.

He was well educated. He taught private school several years. He had many books, mainly ancient history and law. He was well versed in civil law. In our family scrapbook is a letter that says, "E.B. Woodrome was a brilliant lawyer. People came from near and far to consult him on legal matters."

His farm of about 300 acres was on Reed's Creek, about 10 miles west of Batesville. He had a double two-story log house with passage between, porch at the side, and stone chimneys at each end.

He was restless. The Woodrome family came to Texas in 1855. The trip was made by one wagon drawn by two yoke of oxen, one wagon drawn by two horses, extra horses, mules and cattle. Harrison Taylor, then eight years old, rode a mule and helped drive the cattle. They settled in Tarrant County.

He was a Mason. The demit issued from the Evans Store Lodge 212, Deer Creek, Tarrant County, Texas, is in our family scrapbook. The lodge was in existence only one year. It was chartered in 1858 and demised in 1859 in Tarrant County at Roxanna in the State of Texas. The demit was issued on the reason for moving west but he evidently changed his mind because he later moved to Gonzales County.

He was in the Civil War. In 1864 men up to 50 years of age were drafted. He was in active service a few months, stationed near Bonham, Texas, about a hundred miles from his home in Tarrant County. He was not in battles.

In September 1867 the Woodrome family moved to Gonzales County. Here they lived one year and in August, 1868, they moved to Terryville, DeWitt County, Texas.

He was engaged in the operation of freight wagons serving Port Lavaca, Terryville, Lockhart and Bastrop.

Eliza Jane Sexton was born on 13 March 1824 at Indiana. On 24 December 1840, at age 16, Eliza Jane Sexton married at Lawrence County, Arkansas,, Edmund Bee Woodrome, age 25, son of John Woodrome and Jemima Edwards. Eliza Jane Sexton died on 14 June 1883 at Terryville, DeWitt County, Texas, at age 59. She was buried at Hollan Cemetery moved to County Line Cemetery, Terryville, Texas.

NOTES FROM BURKETT-GREEN-WOODROME BOOK by Mina Mae Woodrome (PAGE 62):
There is no information on her family. Further searching is needed. I had spent much time looking in Tennessee records because it was reported in "The Woodrome Family Tree" that she was born in Nashville. On the 1850 census of Lawrence County, Arkansas, and on the 1880 census of DeWitt County, Texas, it is shown that she was born in Indiana, her father was born in Illinois and her mother was born in Tennessee. On the 1880 census Emma Louise Potts age 13, an orphan, was the only one listed as living with her.

She was of fair complexion, red hair and gray eyes, 5 feet 2 inches tall. She was quiet, reserved, but firm, and was truly a homemaker. A fine seamstress, she learned to tailor suits for men - - this was after she had five children.

She enjoyed riding horses and was an expert horsewoman.

Grandmother Woodrome's Bible is about 3x6x9" with a thick brown leather cover. Print is easy to read. Some pages and index in front of the book are missing, some were loose, so I had it rebound.

Although the publisher's page, introduction and preface are gone, there is a page at the beginning of the New Testament which gives the date 1848, published by the American Bible Society.

In the family record between the Old Testament and New Testament the handwriting is very ornate - some in script and some hand printed, some in black, blue and green ink.

In this part with the family record Grandmother had pasted clippings of short articles and poems. A page that she pasted into the Bible appears to be a Godey lady print in color. Detail is exquisite. Under the picture "Robe Valentine" is printed. There appears to be a handwritten autograph or signature. It looks like "WAW", a line drawn under the initials and under the line a word that appears to be "Ball".

There is a pretty little bookmark made of special paper with small holes which were embroidered with silk thread. What is left of it is 1/2x5. On the left side and across the top is a border of red flowers with green leaves in cross stitch. The Bible (picture of a book) is embroidered in gold thread and words "Our Guide" are embroidered in green silk thread.

Evidently she kept her supply of postage stamps in her Bible. On the bottom of page 398 is an uncanceled one-cent stamp - stuck fast to the page.

I'm not sure how we came into possession of this Bible. I can remember when I was very small Papa visited his sister Sarah Ann. I think she gave it to him.

After my parents died and we were dividing their things, my brother took our family Bible and I took Grandmother's. The pages are old and stained and worn and whether Grandmother or Aunt Sarah Ann (or whoever passed it on to us) placed some of these things in it - - I feel that we have a treasure.

The records in this publication would not be as complete had we not had the information that has been preserved for us in Grandmother Woodrome's Bible.

She was a member of the Missionary Babtist Church.

*Her will statement was made to her son, Harrison Taylor Woodrome on the day she died (June 14, 1883). Six days later, June 20, 1883, this instrument was prepared. The will is in the George Houston Woodrome family scrapbook.

Edmund Singleton Kirkpatrick, who is called Edward in many records, was the child of John Kirkpatrick's first marriage to a woman who has not been identified. Edmund himself was married twice. His first wife, whom he married in 1830 in IL, was Anna Barnett Woodrome, daughter of John and Jemina (Edwards) Woodrome. She was born 3 March 1814 in TN and died in late 1860. Most of the children came from this union. The second marriage to Mrs. Elizabeth (Smithee) Goacher took place in 1861. She was mother to four children by Edmund but only one is identified. In addition to being a farmer, E.S. Kirkpatrick was a brick and stone mason. He built some of the finest houses in Batesville, AR. In 1835 the family moved to Independence Co., AR and in 1836 to Washington Township, Lawrence Co., AR, where they were listed in the 1850 census. The census lists him as Edward L. Kirkpatrick but he is obviously the same man. The census data gives his wife as Ana B. and her age as 37.

In 1835, Edmund came to AR, settled on Big Bottom, White River, Independence Co., AR. In 1836, he moved to Lawrence Co., AR, settle on Reed's Creek, 20 mi. NE to Batesville, AR. Owned 160 acres of land on Reed's Creek and raised his family there. Became owner of 500 acres and considerable property.

He was a Baptist Preacher for Reeds Creeks, AR from 1839 until his death. He was also a Democrat.

He served in the Black Hawk War in 1832, and in 1850 and 1855 he applied for bounty land warrants based on this service. The applications for warrants came from Lawrence Co., AR. He served as a private under Capt. William J. Stephenson, 1st Brigade, 2nd Regiment, Illinois Mounted Volunteers, in the Black Hawk War. He mustered at Hennepin, IL and served briefly. According to the "Centennial History of Arkansas", Edmund was at the battle of Kellogg's Grove and had a horse shot out from under him. His brother, William T. Kirkpatrick served with the same unit.
