Article "W.T. and Martha V. Gray Thomas," in "Stewart County Heritage," Vol. I, pp. 415-416, published by The Stewart County [TN] Historical Society. Based on the Goodspeed history, but improves upon it with further details --- William Thornton Thomas was born October 2, 1841 in the part of Stewart County that is now Houston County. He was the son of John Thomas and Nancy Allen. At the age ot sixteen, he became a salesman for Allen and Stanfield. In 1861, he volunteered in Company B, 50th Tennessee Infantry and served at Fort Donelson during the Civil War. Dawn on February 13, 1862 brought heavy, rattling artillery fire. That afternoon the wind whipped around into the north, and the mild rain turned into a blizzard of sleet and snow. On the night of February 15, 1862 a war council was held and it was decided to surrender. Several thousand escaped with General Bushrod R. Johnson and General N.B. Forrest, but W.T. Thomas was not among them. Records show that the prisoners were loaded on steam boats in crowded conditions -- as many as 800 to some of the boats. Many died of exhaustion and exposure. W. T. Thomas was among the enlisted men who were sent to Camp Douglas and after seven months was exchanged. Upon his return he was made Captain of Company I of the 50th Tennessee Infantry regiment. He fought at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, and numerous smaller battles, and was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina on May 2, 1865. After the war, Thomas returned to Cumberland City where he took a prominent part in the affairs of the community and church. In 1866, he began the mercantile business which he operated for many years. At his death, the business was a partnership -- Thomas and Bradford -- and his partner was William Sidney Bradford. He became a leading merchant in the town and his business attracted farmers for miles around to buy his general wares. On November 8, 1866, W.T. Thomas and Martha V. Gray, daughter of Peter and Mary Dunbar Bradford Gray, were married at home on Elks Creek, Stewart County, Tennessee. There were no children of this marriage, however, they did adopt a daughter who was named Doxie. She married William Howell, a prominent lawyer, of Dover, Tennessee. As business began to flourish, the couple built a home, which overlooked the Cumberland River, with a magnificent scene, and they lived there the remainder of their lives. The house, which was located about one-fourth mile west of the present Methodist Church in the town, was constructed by a master builder and abundantly provided with bedrooms, both upstairs and down, parlor, reception room, dining room, and kitchen. There were several porches downstairs plus a sun porch upstairs and a patio. Their home was a gathering place for numerous guests which they entertained, some of whom came for extended visits. As was evidenced by the elegant furnishings and literary selections found in the home, both husband and wife were of refined taste acquired by intellectual and aesthetic training. Martha was a kind and religious woman, generous of heart and eager to help those less fortunate than she. There were many poor women who eagerly looked forward to Christmas when she knew she would receive her only new dress of the year from Mrs. Thomas. Thomas was an avid hunter and spent considerable time on excursions to Alabama, Texas, and Mississippi to hunt deer. Friends joined him on these hunts and they traveled by rail. In addition, he was one of the organizers of the Cumberland City Academy and served on its Board of Trustees as well as owning 1/3 of the property. Eventually, the Academy became W.T. Thomas School, when Martha donated it to the county. He was also a member of the Tennessee State Legislature. In 1904, the Cumberland City State Bank was organized by Nixon Pickard. W. T. Thomas, and others. His death occurred on April 8, 1913 and he was buried in the Cumberland City Cemetery. Martha V. Thomas December 10, 1934 and was buried by his side in the family plot. From Joel Thomas Buchanan III's Website (http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/b/u/c/Joel-T-Buchanan/GENE1-0038.html#CHILD151127299): Military Service: Served in Co. B, 50th TN Infantry (CSA) -- taken prisoner at Fort Donelson and spent time at Camp Douglas, the infamous Union prison camp in Illinois. When unit was reorganized, he was commissioned and served in other battles until discharged. Misc #1: Staunch Democrat in politics Misc #2: The public high school in Cumberland City is named for W.T. Thomas. |

Excerpt from Goodspeed's 1886 "History of Tennessee," article on Houston County --- Nathan 0. Thomas, a very prominent merchant of Erin, was born August 20, 1845, near Erin. He was the second of a family of ten children of John H. and Nancy (Allen) Thomas, both natives of Houston County. Both grandfathers were among the very first settlers. The father was a farmer and one of the prominent men of the community. He died in 1855. The mother survived him for about ten years. Both parents were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The immediate subject of this sketch was reared on a farm and secured a common school education. He remained with his mother till she died, and he then carried on farming for three years. In 1869 he came to Erin and engaged in general merchandising, which he continues very successfully with a full line of mercantile articles. In 1870 he was appointed postmaster at Erin and held it till 1881, when on account of political caste he was deprived of it, but has been reinstated under the present administration. From 1880 till 1885 he was engaged in the lumber trade and saw-milling. He was married in 1872 to Jennie M. McAuley, the result of this union being six children, three of whom are living, viz.: Flora, Vida and Clatie; and three have died, viz.: Helen, Clara and Willie. Mr. Thomas is a member of the F. & A. M. organization. His wife is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He is a Democrat in politics and always has been. He is one the prominent men of the county and has been officially interested in town affairs.
