Robert Kemp was born on 14 October 1648 at Yorkshire, England. He was the son of Henry Kemp and Elizabeth ?. On 6 July 1678, at age 29, Robert Kemp married at Talbot, Maryland,, Elizabeth Webb, daughter of Edmond Webb and Elizabeth ?. Robert Kemp died in November 1702 at Talbot County, Maryland, at age 54.       From the KEMP Family Bible (under births): Robert Kemp, the first of the family of the Kemps of whom we have any record, was from Yorkshire in England. He married Elizabeth, daughter of a certain Edmond Webb, who dying about the year 1685 left his said daughter Elizabeth a tract of land in Bayside called Bolton, in Talbot County, Maryland, the same on which the main branch of the family now resides. The aforesaid Robert died in 1702, and left the following children to wit: John, Edmond, William, Rachel, Sarah, Elizabeth and Jane. From "Testimony of Freedom: The Quakers of Eastern Shore of Maryland": The site of the first Quaker Meeting in Talbot County was near the present day villages of McDaniel and Wittman. The land was given for the purpose c1667 by Robert Kemp, a young Quaker recently come to Bayside. The land was adjacent to "Boulton", also known as "The Quaker Kemp Farm." Betty's Cove Meeting, visited by George Fox in 1672 & 1673, was located at "North Bend", owned by James Dixon. The Meeting House was finished c1676 and continued in use till c1693. Long after the death of John Kemp IV, his widow Sarah more than a century after the abandonment of the Bayside Meeting Houses, except by the encircling dead in the cemetery, with her children would sit meeting alone. The Quaker religion centered on four main tenets: community, peace, equality, and simplicity. The Quakers who settled in Talbot County were from England, Ireland, and Wales as well as from Virginia & New England. An unswervingly honest, temperate, generous, yet clannish people, they left their impress ineffaceably upon the Eastern Shore's Talbot County.
