 In December 1899, the J. H. Burkett family moved to a farm two miles east of Putnam, Callahan County, Texas. In the Fall of 1900 two sons, Joe and Omar found a few pecans in a pack-rat nest in the east bank of Battle Creek. The pecans had soft shells. Their father recognized the excellence of the pecans and asked the boys to locate the tree. They found it on the South Bluff of Battle Fish Creek (on State maps) at a point where the meanderings of the creek ran in a west-to-east course. The tree was protected from uprooting by erosion as it was closely crowded by live oak and mesquite trees on the west, south and east. On the north a few water elms some forty feet high stood immediately on the bluff. The tree appeared to be some twenty to thirty years old. Each spring Burkett undertook to graft buds from the tree but had no success until 1903. The first nut production was in 1905. Because of his persistence the variety is now established. The parent tree was destroyed several years after the budwood was taken. At a meeting of the Texas Nut Growers Association in Waco, it was officially named the Burkett Pecan. One of the first papershell pecans, it grows in the upland sandy soil of the Texas Cross Timbers region and requires less water than varieties such as the Stuart, which are found closer to the Gulf Coast. The original budded tree is located in Callahan County on the north edge of 1H20, about a half mile east of FM880, near the Eastland County line. It is a big beautiful tree protected by a chain link fence. There is a large sign on the fence, "The Original Burkett Pecan". Experts cannot find the place where the budwood was set, Burkett did the job so perfectly. |
