![]() From Mina Mae Woodrome: When Elbie was about a month old, she still had not been named. We have heard mama tell many times that as she and papa were talking about a name for their baby girl, Stanley Woodrome (our half-brother) came into the room and mama told him they had decided to name her Corinne LaVaunt. Mama said Stanley was displeased and said, "Please don't name her that. Everybody in town is named Co-REEN". At this very time, the baby cried. Mama said, "Well we won't name her that". We never questioned mama where she got the name. On December 26, 1977, I learned about the name Corinne LaVaunt. Mrs. Jessie Rappold of Yoakum (courtesy of Sara Lee Green Messserall) gave me a picture of GREEN'S OPERA HOUSE (Grandfather Little Berry Green owned it) and a picture of "PROGRAMME - Grand Opening - December 16, 1897". Corinne LaVaunt was the leading lady in this comedy-drama, "Braving the World" and she was listed with two others in "between acts specialties". Apparently, mama had seen the play and remembered the unusual name. They did not name her Corinne LaVaunt, so what did they name her? Little Bee - for her two grandfathers - Little Berry Green and Edmund Bee Woodrome. While in school she wroter her name L. Bee. When she went to work, she found it less confusing to spell out her initials - - Elbie, pronounced L. B. Mama's brother, John and his wife, had a daughter within a year or two of Elbie. They named her Little Bee. I don't know how they accounted for the Bee. They called their daughter Bee. Elbie maintains the scrapbook on the George Houston Woodrome family. |

From materials compiled by Albert W. Dockter p. 103: Moved to East Tennessee and apparently lived with, or close to, Mary and William. I am told she was dying with TB and requested that she be buried under a large fir tree on the hill which was plainly visible from William's home. She was buried where she requested and she became the first person buried in what is now known as the Keeble Graveyard next to Keeble Chapel on Coldsprings Road, Blount County, Tennessee. |

William Keeble was born on 23 May 1755 at Fauquier County, Virginia.
He was the son of ? Keeble.
On 17 December 1799, at age 44, William Keeble married at Fauquier County, Virginia,, Mary White Keeble, age 15, daughter of Richard Keeble and Hannah Stampe.
William Keeble died on 30 December 1834 at Blount County, Tennessee, at age 79.
He was buried at Keeble Cemetery, Blount County, Tennessee.
Moved to East Tennessee in the Spring of 1800. Settles on 160 acres of land available to him as a result of his Revolutionary War service (Bounty Land Warrant # 14518-160-55). He enlisted in Fauquier Co., VA in the Company of Capt. James Scott in a Regiment commanded by Colonels Toliver & Stephens and Maj. Thomas Marshall for 1 year as a private soldier, and was at the Battle of Long Bridge, VA and subsequently was honorably discharged. Then in August 1777 he again enlisted in Fauquier Co. under Capt. Elias Edmonds Co. of the Artillery of Col. Thomas Marshall's Regiment of the Virginia Line. He served as a Bombadier and was discharged in Richmond, VA on 8/22/1780. In 1781 he was in the Militia Service at the Siege of York and the capture of Lord Cornwallis (it was on this field of battle that he picked up a musket which he brought home - the musket is kept by the descendants of Manley Keeble). In 1781, just before Christmas, he enlisted in Capt. Beverly Ray's Company and marched to Savannah, GA where he was in the battle at the defeat of "Old King Sago - the Indian Chief". In the fall of 1782 they were marched back to Cumberland Old Courthouse, VA where he was again honorably discharged. According to the County Court Records of Blount County, in December of 1817 there is a William Keeble, an orphan boy now of the age of 7 years, that is bound to William Keeble, Sr. until he arrives at the age of 21 years. We have no idea who this child belonged to, or from whence he came to live with William and Mary. In April 1829, William Keeble applied for a gov. pension based on his war service. The claim was granted and pension commenced 1-3-1830. William Keeble made out his will on 12-27-1834. In his will he mentions that he is very ill and knows he is about to die. He did die 3 days later. His widow, Mary continued to draw the pension until her death, 6-15-1855, also in Blount County, Tennessee. Both are buried in the Keeble Cemetery by Keeble Chapel. In William's will he states that "information says to me that there is a legacy yet remaining from my fathers and mothers estate". He also states that "it is my will at the death of my wife, my black woman Sarah shall have the privilege of making choice of a home to live at." Several Family Traditions Repeated Numerous Times: 1) William Keeble came from Scotland. One branch of the family even states that his middle name was McDonald. 2) William Keeble and George Washington played together as youngsters. Hardly possible since GW was born in 1732 and WK was born in 1755. However, it is possible that William's father was also named William and the elder William knew George Washington. There was a William Keeble, Jr. and Sr. in Fauquier County in the 1790's. 3) William Keeble had two brothers: Cumberland and Alfonzo. The 3 brothers were said to have fashioned log rafts at Saltville, VA, loaded the rafts with salt and made their way to the frontier where they sold their wares and returned overland by foot to Saltville where they repeated their venture. One branch of the family says these men were one generation younger than our William. 4) William Keeble sired 22 children. We can account for 15 of them with our records. It is quite possible that they may have been still-births or infant deaths. We do know: 1) There were Keebles on the American shores as early as the 1650's. Kibbles were landowners in Somerset County, Maryland in the early 1700's. 2) A William Keeble wrote a will in 1727 and the names of his children sound for all the world like our William Keeble. 3) A William Keeble, Sr., Planter of Somerset County, Maryland made his will in 1770. |
