Joseph Holmes Dead
Died at home of son - burial at Lindenwood
Joseph Holmes died yesterday morning at 10:35 at the home of his son, George Holmes, 413 Jilson Avenue. Mr. Holmes was born in Bariafton, Staffordshire, England, in 1825 and came to the United States in 1849. Since that time he had made his home in or near Lindenwood. His wife died thirteen years ago. Mrs. Elizabeth Alcock, Mrs. Sarah Stocking, Mrs. Esther Stocking, Ernest, Mrs. Mary J. Wadey and Albert of Lindenwoo , Joseph Jr., of Monroe, and Robert, George and Mrs. Adelia Young, of Rockford, survive.
There will be a prayer service at the home of George Holmes Monday morning at 10 o'clock. The body will be taken to Lindenwood for burial and the funeral service will be held in the Lindenwood church at 12:30.

BIOGRAPHY: She was an orphan and by the 1820's her family was extinct. She died
about a year after the move to NC and R.Merrill was sent back to Newport.
But Henry M. remained in NC, studied medicine, and was graduated from the
U of PA. Information provided via an 1894 letter from R. Merrill Shaw.
Arnold V.R. of RI, Vol.15, p.240, under Marriages, lists Elizabeth
Muckmore and John A. Shaw at Newport noting that the marriage notice
appeared in the Providence Gazette for 19 June, 1802. That one only
says, "Married at Newport Mr. John A. Shaw to Miss Elizabeth Muchmore"
and though appearing in the June 19 issue does not give the exact
marriage date.

DEATH: His will, recorded in Vol.5, p.290, Newport reads as follows: Be it remembered that I John Shaw of Newport in the county and in the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations House Wright being of age and of sane mind do make and declare this my last Will and Testament in Manner following, that is to say - 1st- I give and bequeath to my Wife Elizabeth Shaw the use occupation and improvements, the Rents, Profit and Interest arising on all my Estate both Real and Personal for and during the term of her natural Life and After her decease. 2d- I give and Devise in equal Moieties, Share and Share alike to my two daughters Mehitable Shaw and Mary Shaw my Dwelling House, Work Shop, the Ground on which they stand and the Garden, and all the Household furniture to them their Heirs and Assigns forever. But should my said Daughters die without Heirs born in legal Wedlock, or that they shall not have disposed of the aforesaid devised Property for their Support, then I Give and Devise the aforesaid Property both Rent and in such parts thereof as they may die seized and posessed to my two Sons William Shaw and John Allen Shaw in equal Moities, share and share alike, to them and their Heirs and assigns forever. 3d- I Give and Bequeath in equal Moities, Share and Share alike, to my two sons all the Notes of Hand and Money that I have at Interest, particularly three promissory Notes given to me by my said Son John Allen Shaw, $800, $200 and $100, to them their heirs and assigns forever. 4th- I Give and Bequeath my Pew, number 17, in the first Baptist Meeting House in Newport to my family jointly and severally, during the life of my Wife and my two Daughters, but after their decease, I Give and Devise said Pew to my two sons, to them, their Heirs and Assigns forever. 5th- I Give and Bequeath to my Grand Children Rebecca Geffroy, Victor Geffroy, Adeline Geffroy, Felix Geffroy and John Geffroy, each and every one of them One Dollar to them and their heirs and assigns forever. Lastly- I hereby Nominate, Constitute and Appoint my two sons jointly and severally my Executor or Executors of this my last will and Testament, hereby revoking any and all other former Wills by me made, establishing and confirming this and this only as my last Will and Testament. In Testimony whereof I do hereby set my hand and seal this day the 24 Aug 1812.
Signed sealed Published Pronounced and Declared by the said John Shaw as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who at the same time at his
request in his presence and in the presence of each other hereunto set our names as Witnesses to the same: Benj. B. Mumford, Sam F. Gardner, Peter P. Remington. At a Court of Probate holden at the Council Chamber in Newport Monday June 3 AD 1816 to Court cometh Benjamin B. Mumford, Samuel F. Gardner and Peter P. Remington, the Three Witnesses to the foregoing Will and on their Solemn Oaths declare and say that they were present at the time that John Shaw the Testator therein named executed the same, to Wit, on the 24 May in the year 1812, that he was then of a sound disposing mind and they saw him sign and seal and heard him publish and declare the same as and for his last Will and Testament, that they signed as Witnesses at the same time in the presence of the Testator and in the presence of witnesses.
