Jabez (1806 – 1880) was born in Washington County, NY after the return of his parents from Ontario. He married Orpha Knight in 1832 and then moved to Watertown, NY. They had 3 sons. Jabez was a farmer. The connecting of him to the Jabez and Eunice family came through a seven-page hand written document in 1929 by Bessie Olmstead Croft, granddaughter of Jabez and Orpha. It basically outlines the descendants of the Watertown Olmstead’s, tying them to Hiram of Canada (# 1 above). There are some errors, but the real significance is that it confirms that these families were one and the same! In spite of the fact that most lived in NY and some had moved to western states, they had kept in contact with each other, confirmed by the information in the document. It was passed on to me from Peg Johnstone, great-great granddaughter of Jabez and Orpha.

He removed with his parents to the town of Watertown when he was an infant and where he was educated and has since resided. Jabez OLMSTEAD [Parents] was born in 1773 in Hebron, Washington, New York. He died in 1827. Jabez married (MRIN:746) Eunice OLMSTEAD.

BIOGRAPHY: Doreen Dolleman’s Research
http://www.geocities.com/cohommel/Doreen_Dolleman_5_1.htm
I will begin with Jabez Olmstead Jr. who is familiar territory with me. He was born around 1773 and was probably the son of Jabez Sr. and Miriam Husse Olmstead of Hebron, NY. He was married first to Eunice and moved to Burritt’s Rapids, Ontario in 1799. The first record is an application for leasing of lot 28 in Marlborough Twp. This family, consisting of Jabez 28, Eunice 27, Hiram 3, and Noah 2, was listed in the early assessment records of Burritt’s Rapids in 1802. Since there has been no further record found of Jabez Jr. and Eunice in Ontario after 1803 my assumption is that they returned to Hebron, NY. The federal and state census records of Hebron confirm that there were at least two Jabez Olmstead’s enumerated from 1790 through 1825. An older Jabez (with a small family) in 1790 and 1800 and a younger Jabez (with a large family) in the years following. My guess based on all evidence collected over the years is that Jabez Jr. returned from Ontario to Hebron by 1803, possibly because his father was ill or had died.

Eunice OLMSTEAD died in 1813. Eunice married (MRIN:746) Jabez OLMSTEAD.

They had the following children.

Thomas Frank WRIGHT was born on 2 Dec 1830. He died on 10 Aug 1887 in Chatsworth, Livingston, Illinios. He was buried in Springdale Cemetery, Peoria, Peoria, Illinois. Thomas married (MRIN:748) Lucinda KNIGHT on 14 Jan 1857 in Henry, Marshall, Illinois.

BIOGRAPHY: CHATSWORTH TRAIN WRECK: AUGUST 10, 1887
During the late evening of August 10, 1887, a fifteen-foot trestle bridge on the Toledo, Peoria, and Western Railroad just outside of Chatsworth, Illinois, caught fire. It is unknown whether careless workers who had been burning weeds along the tracks earlier in the day accidentally started the fire or if sparks from a train had ignited the blaze. Regardless, by midnight the bridge was engulfed in flames, just as an excursion train carrying eight hundred passengers reached the crossing. A popular vacation during the late 19th century, excursion trains typically carried middleclass vacationers from rural locations in the Midwest to popular destinations in the East or West. The train passing by Chatsworth was heading to Niagara Falls, with a round-trip ticket from Illinois costing only $7.50. The low cost for the excursion attracted a large number of vacationers, creating an unusually lengthy train consisting of two locomotive engines pulling over twenty passenger cars. Although the train's engineer spotted the burning bridge on the tracks ahead, he was unable to stop the train in time. The first engine passed over the bridge with no trouble, but the bridge collapsed under the second engine, causing it to break off from the first and tumble into the ditch. The passenger cars followed, crashing first into the overturned engine and then into each other, each car slicing into the one before it. All told, eleven passenger cars careened into the ditch, with only the heavy Pullman sleeper cars staying firmly on the tracks. Eighty-one passengers were killed in the crash and another 372 were injured. L. J. Haberkorn, owner and operator of the only hotel and restaurant in Chatsworth, and his wife had been scheduled to be on the Niagara Falls excursion but they decided to skip the trip at the last minute. When word reached town about the train wreck, Haberkorn led a group of civilian first responders to the site, arriving within an hour of the crash. As there was little water available to extinguish the burning wreckage, the rescuers used their bare hands to scrape up dirt to throw on the flames. Haberkorn asserted years later that the wreck was "not an accident but a case of criminal carelessness on the part of the railroad officials." He believed that, because of the number of passengers on the excursion train, there should have been a smaller pilot engine traveling ahead of it to make sure that the track was passable. Haberkorn lamented, "Had the railroad company done their duty, I would not be seeing in my mind these horrible sights all over again as I saw them that terrible night." Adam Groves,

Curnel (also spelled "Colonel") Knight died in the town of Glocester in Providence County in Rhode Island(Gloucester in Essex County is in Massachusetts).  He married Elizabeth (also known as "Betsey") Wilcox.  I don't know the source of your birth record for her, but she was the daughter of Stephen Wilcox and Anstress Stone, and she was born about 1799 in West Greenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island instead of Newport.  The Wilcox Family goes back a couple of generations in West Greenwich, R.I.  Elizabeth died on April 3, 1862 in Coventry, Kent County, Rhode Island.
