Information on David Knight is found in the Family Bible of his parents. David Knight served in the A Company 5th Missouri S.M. Calvary Union army during the Civil War from February 24, 1862 until June 22, 1863 when he returned to Andrew Co., Missouri and married his childhood sweetheart, Mary Jane Miller. She was the widow of  Mr. Crouson in Fulton, Calloway Co., Missouri. She was the daughter of Allen D. Miller and his first wife and had 5 children. He then married Mary -?- and they had an additional 9 children in Andrew Co., Missouri. (I find no proof of a second wife - also he is buried with Mary Miller Knight). Ben as he was known, went through blacksmith apprenticeship at Rochester, Andrew Co., and worked for a short while at Avenue City an then opened his own blacksmith shop in Savanna, Missouri in 1869. In the spring of 1871 he sold the shop and moved to Flag Spring Mo., about 15 or 20 miles N. E. of Savannah. The he bought about 10 acres and opened a blacksmith shop. Ben and family live in Flag Springs until 1884 when he sold the property and blacksmith shop and moved N.E. of Oketo, Marshall Co., Kansas and leased a  ½ acre of land which he and his sons farmed. About 1899, Ben and Mary Jane, along with another couple took a covered wagon trip out to eastern Colorado, looking for land to buy, but finding nothing that suited them better than the property in Marshall Co., went back and on April 9, 1900 bought the north 60 acres of the S.W. ¼ of section 5, and their son Charles bought the south 100 acres TWP. One, Range 8 east of the 6th principal Meridian. Ben and Mary Jane lived there until 1919 when they moved to South Gate near Los Angeles, California. Ben and Mary Jane still owned the property in Marshall Co.,  Kansas until it was sold on Jan. 9, 1939 to settle their estate.

THEIR FIRST HOME WAS IN SHERMAN, DEKALB CO., WHERE MOST OF THEIR CHILDREN WERE BORN.
