JONATHAN KNIGHT was a resident within the present limits of West Pike Run Township for many years. He was one of the most widely-known and highly esteemed men of Washington County or of Western Pennsylvania. He served with honor in both Houses of the State Legislature, and as a member of Congress from his district. He was the most famous surveyor in this section of country, and became one of the most eminent civil engineers of his day in the U. S. The place where he lived and died is about one mile east of the town of Centreville, and now within the limits of West Pike Run Township, though originally in East Bethehem, the change being caused by a readjustment of the lines between the two townships to conform to the route of the old National Road. His residence was but a very short distance north of the township line in West Pike Run, and apparently he always continued to regard himself as belonging to East Bethlehem, which was his post office address. A very brief and modest autobiographical sketch of MR. KNIGHT, prepared for Lanman’s “Dictionary of Congress” in 1858, copied from the original manuscript, and furnished by his son, WILLIAM KNIGHT, now residing at or near Marysville, Marion Co., Iowa, is here given.

“I was born of poor and respectable parents, in Bucks County, Pa., on the 22d of November, 1787, and with them removed in 1801 to East Bethlehem, Washington Co., in the same State, where I yet reside, engaged in agriculture.

In 1809 I married ANN HESTON, in a meeting of the religious society of Friends, in accordance with their good order, and we still remain in religious fellowship with that society...”

JONATHAN KNIGHT, the son of ABEL and ANNA S. KNIGHT, was born in Bucks County, Pa., on the 22d day of November, 1787. His father was a weaver by trade but could survey land and teach school -- “Civil and Military Engineers of America,” by CHARLES STEWART, C. E. , 1871.

(pg. 988) He raised a large family, ten children... He left a comfortable estate. JONATHAN KNIGHT died at his residence in West Pike Run Township, Nov. 22, 1858. The following account of the event, and of the fatal illness preceding it, is furnished by his eldest son, WILLIAM KNIGHT, of Iowa: “He was taken suddenly ill with bilious colic in a very severe form at his home, on the 13th day of November, 1858. In a few hours inflammation had set in, causing a severe pain and a continual oppressive sensation in the chest. He died on the tenth day of his illness, being the seventy-first anniversary of his birthday (November 22d). During his last illness he was very patient and calm, conversed little, but always spoke pleasantly to those about him, recognizing them until the last moment, and with his last words said that he had made his peace with God, and had no matter to make up with any man, and that he was entering upon a state of rest and happiness in the life to come.”

On the ten children of JONATHAN KNIGHT, WILLIAM, the eldest, lived in East Bethlehem until 1864, when he emigrated to Mahaska County, Iowa, and resided there until the fall of 1881, when he moved to his present home at Marysville, Marion Co., in the same state. OLIVER lived in East Bethlehem and West Pike Run townships till his death. HENRY C. settled early in life in Detroit, Mich., and died there. DAVID S. passed his life in East Bethlehem Township, Washington County. ZEPHANIAH B. migrated from Washington County to Oakland County, Mich., and remained there until a few years ago, when he moved to Omaha, Neb., and now resides there. JONATHAN KNIGHT, JR., settled early in life in Mehaska County, Iowa, but soon afterwards moved to Tonganoxie, Kan., where he is now living. ABEL was located for a short time in West Pike Township, then moved to Oakland County, Mich., and soon afterwards to Leavenworth County, Kan., where he remained but a short time, and moved to the State of California, where he remained till his death, in the fall of 1881. Three other children of JONATHAN KNIGHT - EBER H., ELIZABETH, and ANN - resided in West Pike Run Township with their parents until their death.

Giles Knight, along with his wife, Mary English, son Joseph and sister Ann Knight sailed in 1682 with William Penn's fleet of hips. They are on the ship "Society" manifest as passagners. 'A HISTORY OF THE TOWNSHIPS OF BYBERRY AND MORELAND IN PHILADELPHIA, FROM THEIR EARLIEST SETTLEMENT BY THE WHITES TO THE PRESENT TIME" JOSEPH M MARTINDALE, M.C. PHILADELPHIA
T. ELLWOOD ZELL, 17 & 19 S. SIXTH ST. 1867

Among the emigrants who came to America with William Penn, in 1682, was Giles Knight of Gloucestershire. While in England, he married Mary, a sister of Henry English; and, at the time of their arrival in America, they had one son Jospeh, who was about two years of age. During the passage across the atlantic, Mary was very ill, so that her recovery was doubtful; yet she did recover, and lived for many years after their arrival. Her father purchased a tract of five hunderd acres in Byberry, and gave one half of it to this son, Henry English, and the other half to Giles Knight. The latter lived in a cave for six weeks after his arrival, and then constructed a wigwam, in which he resided for several months, and then erected alog house. He was very prosperous in his business, and some time afterward bought the adjoining lands of Tibby and Cross, making al together a tract of six hundred acres. The house first, being too small to accomodate his increasing family, he erected a long log-house, one story hight on the Tibby Tract and opened a store for the sale of dry goods, groceries & ect.

When he went back to England for a visit, the Cloucestershire Montly Meeting gave his a certificate to transfer his membership to Byberry Monthly Meeting. He had not made such arrangments before he and Mary left the first time. The entire Montly Meeting signed the document including Henry English, Thomas,Daniel & Jonathan Knight among others.

Mc Cracken, George E., Drake University, Des Moines, IA. New World Immigrants I, ' Welcome ' Notes, p 312

"Giles Knight, of the parish of Rodbarrow, co. Gloucester, a broadweaver, m. at Nailsworth Monthly meeting, Mary English of the parish of Horsley. Their son Joseph was born 10 3rd month 1680; theyhad another son, Giles, born 18 10th month 1681, but no one has claimed he came to America. Giles and wife had a certificate from Nailsworth Monthly meeting dated 11 2nd month 1682. Abington Friends Records of Births and Deaths show also the birth of another son of Giles and Mary: Thomas, born 9 4th month 1685. In the same record is the birth of another Thomas Knight, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Knight, born 22 3rd month 1687."

Comly prints the following interesting story about Mary Kight: 'On the passage, mary was extremely sick, so thather survival to the end of the voyage was very doubtful. On their arrival up the Delaware, she was carried ashore in a blanket and laid on the bank; she then observed that she had been fully persuaded in her mind that she should not died until she saw America, but now she had landed here, she could not tell how it would go with her.' Her apprehensions were needless, for she did not diee until 24 7th month, 1732, ae 77 years,; Giles Knight died 20 8th month 1726; aet 73."

[1712] Some time during this year, Giles Knight erected a bolting mill on the small stream of water passing through his meadow, lately owned by Nancy Walton. No flour was made at this mill, but the people took their grain to Pennepack or Poquessing mills, and, when it was ground, hauled to Giles Knight’s to have it bolted.
