Granville District, South Carolina, 15th of October, 1833, John Brookshier, aged 74 years: “That he first entered the service in the year 1780 in the forepart of the summer. He was drafted for 3 months and served under Captain ?Johnson. He was marched into South Carolina under the command of General Butler and served in col. Collier’s regiment of North Carolina militia. He joined the army of General Gates at a place called ?Mar___ Creek between Pedee River and Lynch’s Creek. The day before Gates’ Defeat at Camden, he was in a detachment of 500 men sent to relieve the advance guard and fire upon the British. Whilst thus detached, the army under Gates crossed Little Lynch’s Creek higher up and met the British. After the defeat of General Gates, this applicant, with others, fled into North Carolina. He returned to Randolph County, North Carolina.” “The 2nd tour he volunteered under Captain Brittan Fuller for 3 months in the fall of the year 1780. Captain Fuller commanded a troop of Horse. He was ?stationed the greater part of the tour at Salisbury, North Carolina. Was frequently out after the Tories. At the expiration of this tour of 3 months, he was discharged by Captain Fuller in January 1781, as the annexed discharge signed by Captain Fuller and Lt. Roberts will show.” “He then immediately volunteered under Captain Fuller again for six months and served principally in the counties of Randolph, Chatham, and Montgomery, North Carolina. He was in frequent skirmishes with The Tories. The 4th tour he volunteered under Captain Aaron Hill in the summer of 1781 for 6 months. Captain Hill commanded a company of Light Horse and was employed in scouting the country after the Tories. He was in one severe fight with a body of Tories at the plantation of John Needham in Chatham county, North Carolina.” “ This deponent served as a private and claims a pension for 18 months services thus rendered as above stated. The deponent remembers a good many militia officers of Gates’ army, but does not remember any of the regular officers except Colonel Sharpe. He lived in Randolph County, NC when he entered the service…Was born in Randolph County, NC in 1759 to the best of his belief. He has no records of his age. Since the Revolution he has lived in North Carolina, Tennessee and South Carolina.” Additional Comments: Further data from the pension papers : John Brookshire died January 14, 1847. Worley settled permanently in Lumpkin County , GA and became an important citizen there. He and Mildred Donaldson reared to adulthood six children who stayed in that area and had families. Mildred's mother Elizabeth Eaton was daughter of John Eaton and Betsy (-?-) said to be a full-blood Cherokee. The only son of James H. that we know of was Capt. William Lockaby Jasper Worley .He built a nice two-story frame home in 1845 in the town of Dahlonega, GA, now across from the North Georgia College and State University campus (he was a Trustee and instrumental in starting the college). It is operated today as a Bed and Breakfast and is a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Very active in Lumpkin Co, Ga. Served two terms as Sheriff 1850-1854, Clerk of Court 1856-1866..1st Justice of Peace in Lumpkin Co, GA..Seminole Indian Wars 1837-1838 served as 1st Lt, 2nd Regiment of Georgia Volunteers. Recieved 80 acres of bounty land for his military service 22 Oct 1855. James and brother Martin were owners of a copper mine in Fannin Co, GA. (Per Hertige of Lumpkin County, GA)

James H. Worley was born in Spartanburg, S. C., Sept 10th 1807 and died in Dahlonega, Ga., April 1st 1869, in the 62nd year of his age. He was one of the first settlers of the present Lumpkin co. He was sheriff of the county or Clerk of the Superior Court. J. T. Lin

(b.1807) were born in SC; but when the estate of Susan's father was settled in 1821 they appear in Rutherford County; they later were In Habersham, Rabun, Lumpkin, Cherokee and Gilmer Counties of Georgia. The old father Silas (I) moved to Habersham and many of the same northern Georgia counties as sons.

Our William might be more interesting to read about than some other family members simply because of the numerous tracks he left " upon the sands of time"; and he seems to have broken away from the tight cluster of family in Rutherford County, NC. Silas (I) and families had settled down there since before the 1800 census, coming down from Virginia, Buckingham County. Our hero did buy land there, and we feel sure he lived there for a time before the appearance of no-doubt-lovely Susan Hutcheson drew his fancy to her native Spartanburg County, SC. It was only a few miles down river, to be sure, and so they set about rearing their children there.

Capt. William Lockaby Jasper Worley of Dahlonega, GA -grandson of William -made an application for "Indian money". This was to the Court of Claims for his share of the money due the Eastern Cherokees from the U.S.Government as per acts of 1905 and 1906. From data on this application we are able to confirm the names of his uncles and aunt and grandparents. [The story of the Captain is a most interesting one also, and is covered in the Lumpkin County Heritage Book thanks in a large part to the careful work of Historian Jimmy Anderson, current Postmaster in Dahlonega.] In the claims document we find that William and Susan reared four children: Woodson of Rabun County, GA, Susan, Silas and James H., father of the Captain. Woodson is the ancestor of many Worley relatives in Habersham and surrounding counties.
 
An entry in the Spartanburg Deed Book R is an entry showing where William Whirley (sic) of the County of Rutherford, sells his interest, for $150.00, in the Estate of Henry Hutcheson, heir by marriage to his daughter Hannah Hutcheson. Entry dated 27 Dec.1821. No doubt they moved back to land he already owned there.
 
The next set of footprints are found in Habersham County, GA, where William discovered the excitement and profits to be made in "buying real estate low and selling it high". An example is where he bought Land Lot #166, 3rd District at a Sheriffs Sale on 5 Dec.1826 for $20.00 and sold it to his brother Pleasant on 3 Jan.1827 for $300.00. There are 36 entries in the Deed and Court record books of the county involving William Worley between 1825 and 1845, and only three other "Worley" deeds: 2 for Pleasant and 1 for Obadiah [There is no doubt some record of the Settlement of Oby' s estate by the Administrator Pleasant Worley, but the writer has not found it.]
 
An interesting example was the sale to Jacob Stroup of part of Lot # 24, lOth District, of 150 acres, "...whereon James Hodges' Iron Works is situated..." on 19 May. 1830.
 
The entries also tell us about his moving around the state. We see that sometime prior to 24 Apr.1837 William was "...of the County of Cherokee, Georgia". Later, on 22 May. 1845 we see that he is described as "of the County of Cass, Georgia". And we know from later U .S.Census reports that he was apparently to settle down for his last days in Gilmer County , GA. William is found in all sorts of situations, and family tradition suggests to us that he might have been known as "Dahlonega Bill". There was also a William Worley known as "Black Bill" but there is no certainty as to either. We are advised that the brothers William, Pleasant and Thomas were in Lumpkin County prior to settling in Cherokee County, Georgia. William does not appear in the 1832 Habersham Lottery "eligibles" list above cited

Silas WORLEY [Parents]-14042 was born in 1746 in Powhatan, Powhatan, Virginia. Silas married (MRIN:6927) Keziah MAXEY-14043.

BIOGRAPHY: Silas (I) Worley RS

Silas Worley (I) -the second son of John (II) Worley ( possibly m. to Keziah Maxey, b. ca.1750) -was born in Cumberland County, V A (now Powhatan Co.) in about 1756. He grew up there in the shadow of the Old Chapple and his paterna! grandparents John (I) Worley and Esther-. His uncle William Worley and wife Mary -lived just north of Grampa John (I) as well as many cousins-by-the-dozens. Some names that appear in later Worley generations (suggesting some "importance" or relationships) include Agee, Gaites, Jones, Lansdon (Langston), Maxey, Pleasants, Smith, Winston, and Woodson A short distance north of Flat Rock, near the James River was the old Hugeunot French town of Manakin (from the Indian tribe Monocan It was here that his Worley aunts were married by the famous Rev. William Douglas: Aunt Christian married Anthony Agee, son of Hugeunot immigrants, Aunt Elizabeth married Thomas Gibson and Aunt Jude married Humphrey Smith. Auntie Mary was a wife to Sylvanus "Sill" Maxey (of French descent), and birthed 12 of his 20 kids. Silas was possibly named for his uncle Sylvanus Maxey; but in any case was the first descendant of Esther and John to come later to Habersham County in Georgiia.
 
Since Silas Worley of Cumberland County, Virginia sold to Samuel Watkins [a neighbor] personal property, horse, furniture, hogs, etc on the 16th of August, 1770 we presume he left or was leaving town. Is this the time he went into Revolutionary service? Or is this when Silas (spelled Whorley) bought land next to Thomas Doss in Buckingham? His grandfather John (I) died in 1758 and grandmother Esther- died ca.1772-3; and most of their children had moved west up the James River to Buckingham County. Uncle William and Mary-and family went up to Bedford County. From a surveyor's notebook (in Virginia State Library in Richmond) we know that John (III) and his brother Silas owned land on the branches of Wreck Island Creek, near the Appomattox River in Buckingham County (now Appamattox County) prior to 1778-81. He is on the Tax Roll through 1785 and shows up in the 1800 NC, U.S.Census, age 26 to 45, three sons 10 to 16, wife 26 to 45, one daughter under 10, one dau.10-to-16.
 
In Rutherford County, N.C, Silas Worley (Sr.), Winston's grandfather, received five patents from 1804 to 1816 for 450 acres of land near or on waters of the Pacolet River.
The Lure of Rutherford Gold

The Worleys move (southwesterly once again) to North Carolina. Could this have been a result of the Revolutionary War that tore asunder many Tory and Whig (as well as the "Neutral") families and neighbors; and upset the old ways of life? Or was it the lure of "New Ground" or cheap land prices, or the lure of Gold findings in the Old North State? Could it have been the "itchy feet" that so many of us Americans have always had? Think about it, nobody moves "lock, stock and barrel" just for the fun of it. There must be one or more compelling reasons; and so they moved to Rutherford County (now Polk) in North Carolina. The "killing days" were mostly over and things were beginning to settle down; the Indian threat had been reduced, and this new land was theirs for the taking. And it was cheap to boot! The river and stream bottoms had much earlier cleared and cultivated by the Indians, so planting could begin in season. The father Silas bought land from 1804 unti1 1816; and his sons variously obtained lands on the Green River, the Pacolet River, the creeks named White Oak, Wheats and Cove (below the Buncombe County line) and Skyuka Creek at Warrior Mountain near to Tryon. This lovely rich and rolling area is next to the border of South Carolina. All the sons: William, Silas (II), Pleasant, Thomas and Obadiah Worley bought and sold land until the late 1820s, when the "clarion call to move" was heard once more in the land.
 
Children and Marriages

There are eight known children of Silas (I) and (? Keziah Maxey) the first four having been born in Buckingham County, V A; and the second four after he ceased to be on the Tax records there. Firstborn Susannah, b.ca.1772, m. Joseph Francis 18 Apr.1793; Silas (II) b.ca. 1776 and m. Judah Lankford 29 Sep.1801; William, b.ca.1781, m. Susan Hannah Hutcheson ca.1805, probably in SC; Pleasant, b.ca.1785 m. Lucy Susannah Williams Neal on 16 Dec. 1810; Thomas, b. ca. 1788 m. Rachel Blackwell (dau. ofone of two Rev.Joel Blackwells) on 8 Nov.1812; Mary, b.ca.1791, m. James Coward on 8 Nov.1812; Obadiah , b.ca.1796 m. Rebecca Coward on 13 Jun.1821; and Sealah, b.ca.1800 m. James Blackwell on 3 May.1821. All marriages (except William) are recorded in Rutherford County, N C. Silas (11) in 1824 was a Constable, and died of a heart attack about 1826-9 near Warrior Mountain. Widow Judah moved with all her children to the Hickory Flat community in CherokeeCounty, GA about 1838; we have lost track of Susannah Francis and Sealah Blackwell. Thomas and his sister Mary Coward move into that part of Cherokee that became Pickens County. Pleasant and Obadiah moved to Habersham in Georgia. Other families related by marriage or otherwise: Allen, Graham, Mills, (O')Neal, Williams, Hutcheson.
 
1832 Gold Lottery

Herbert B. Kimsey is due the thanks of all hunting ancestors in this area. He preserved and published every existing old record he found. From his list of "Persons Entitled to Draws in Approaching Land and Gold Lottery , Habersham County, GA " we find family. On pg. 2 under Captain William Jones' District (listed next to each other) Silas Worley, R.S. entitled to 2 draws [as a veteran of the Revolution]

Just who the wife of John (II) Worley was is not certain, we believe He was married to Esther Langsdon-, and they lived near his parents and brought up their family there in Flat Rock, Virginia, where the South Chapel (later Rocky Oaks Church) was located on the farm of his parents. We will list the known children. One son was named John (III); and then their son Silas (short for Sylvanus?) was, in our opinion, the first of this generation to live in Habersham County .,Georgia, who served in the Revolution; Peter got a pension for service in the Revolution; Mary married James Smith; and we think a son named William. Buckingham County, Virginia is where the above were living after about 1777; but a courthouse fire leaves us little data but a surveyor's notebook and some tax records. Only Peter Worley appears on the tax lists there after 1785. Silas (I) and family were in Rutherford County, North Carolina prior to the 1800 NC USCensus.

Deed Book 1, p. 52, Cumberland County. John Worley bought from Isaac
Robinson and wife Ann 200 acres "Beginning at a corner Hickory on the
North side of the Man branch of Swift Creek, thence up the creek and
lying on each side of said Swift Creek, with all houses," etc. Isaac and
Ann Robinson then living in Amelia County. Witnesses: Francis Marshall,
Anthony Agee, and Wm. Riggins. (Anthony Agee was son-in-law of John
Worley, Sr. This land near Flat Rock, present Powhatan.

Esther LANGSDON-14050 was born in 1725 in Buckingham County, Virginia. She died in 1772 in Flat Rock, Powhaten, Virginia. Esther married (MRIN:6928) John WORLEY-14049.

William Henry MAXEY [Parents]-14046 was born in 1701 in Virginia. He died in May 1768 in Virginia. William married (MRIN:6929) Mary Elizabeth SUBLETT-14047 in 1728 in Virginia.

Mary Elizabeth SUBLETT-14047 was born in 1708 in Manakin, Buckingham, Virginia. She died in 1771. Mary married (MRIN:6929) William Henry MAXEY-14046 in 1728 in Virginia.

John WORLEY-14044 was born in 1698 in Tyrell County, North Carolina. He died on 27 Mar 1757 in Cumberland County, Virginia. John married (MRIN:6930) Esther BLOUNT-14045.

DEATH: WILL OF JOHN WORLEY
I, John Worley am dispersed to make my Will being in perfect health and sense and memory praised be to God for it. In the Name of God Amen, I give my soul to God whom created it and my body to be buried at the decoction of my executive. Then I give to my well beloved wife Ester Worley all my Estate after my debts are paid and the Plantation whereon I now live during her life and then the said Plantation after her life I give to my grandson Charles Maxey to him and his Heirs... Infully begotten and never to be sold and if the Charles Maxey should dye then to fall to John Gibson, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Gibson. Then I give to John Worley younger and my grandson the Plantation where his father now lives and so to a new line I make according to my own pleasure for the division but my will is that my son John Worley shall have the Plantation during his life but no liberty to sell it nor to rent it. Then I give to my son John Worley Junior one shilling starling. Then I give to my son William Worley one shelling starling. Then I give to my daughter Mary Maxey one shilling starling. Then I give to my daughter Elizabeth Gibson one shelling starling. Then I give to my daughter Christian Agee one shelling starling. Then I give to my daughter Jude Smith one shelling starling. And this is to be my last will and Testament, as written in my hand this 22 day of March 1757.
