PINELLAS PARK -- Some young swimmers are looking for a little competition this summer.
Six girls tried out Tuesday for Swimteam Pinellas Park, a new competitive swimming squad started by the city's recreation department. There were just enough girls to fill the lanes of the city's pool, and organizers are hoping for a dozen or more kids to get the team afloat. Coaches Cathy Cady and Laura Gervasi were impressed with the abilities of the girls who showed for the team's first tryout. "Not bad, not bad. I thought I was going to have to work on this," Gervasi said while watching the girls do the breast stroke from one end of the pool to the other. "They're about where they need to be. They're in really good form." The coaches had the girls swim laps in the pool using different strokes to evaluate their skills and even had them do some simple diving exercises during the 90-minute session. Sisters Mary and Michelle Manchess tried out for the team. Fifteen-year-old Michelle said she wants to be part of the team for exercise and to have fun in the water. "This is Florida, you know, like water. It's really fun," she said. Boys and girls of all ages who have had Red Cross swimming instruction and who are proficient in a few strokes -- front crawl, back crawl and breast stroke -- are welcome to try out for the team. Kids will be divided into beginning, intermediate and advanced groups. Swimmers will race against each other at three weekend meets this summer at the Skyview Municipal Pool on 54th Way while the city builds its program to compete against other cities' swimming teams in the future, said pool manager Holly Aday. Aday said parents and kids have asked for a competitive swimming team for years, but her staff couldn't find the time. This year, she said, she was able to organize schedules to squeeze in the swimming team. "We're just real excited to have the opportunity to try it out and give kids other things to do," she said. Mary and Michelle's mother, Jackie, said she was especially thankful they will have an organized activity to keep her busy this summer.
"I was looking for something for her to do in the summer, so this solves it," she said. "She and her sister can walk here. It's exercise and fun and very inexpensive. I love it." Aday said if the program is a success she would like to budget for portable bleachers, starting blocks and a timing system. But for now, parents will have to help keep swimmers' times with stopwatches, she said. And parents with coaching experience are welcome to lend a hand. Participants must attend at least three practice sessions a week.
