Samuel Hooker (Thomas 1) , son of Rev. Thomas and Susannah Hooker, of Harford, Colony of Conn., born 1633; married Sept. 22, 1658, Mary Willet, Eldest daughter of Capt. Thomas and Mary (Brown) Willet of Plymouth, Mass., born Nov. 10, 1637, at Plymouth.
Rev. Samuel Hooker was aged 64, at the time of his death in 1697, from which it appears that he was born in 1633, but whether before the family left England, or after their arrival in New England is not known, through it is generally supposed that he was s born at Newtowne (Cambridge), Mass. He entered Harvard College in 1651, and graduated in 1653. He entered the ministry in 1657, and preached at Plymouth, Mass., through probably not regularly settled there. He was invited to settle at Springfield, Mass., but declined the invitation and remained at Plymouth until he removed to Farmington, Conn., in 1661, where he succeeded his brother-in-law Rev. Roger Newton and became the second minister of the place and remained there until his death in 1697.

Mary WILLET-7624 was born on 10 Nov 1637 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts. She died on 24 Jun 1712 in Norwalk, Fairfield, Connecticut. Mary married (MRIN:4539) Rev. Samuel HOOKER-7623 on 22 Sep 1658 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Rev. Thomas HOOKER-7625 was born on 7 Jul 1586 in Marfield, Leicestershire Co., England. He died on 7 Jul 1647 in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut. Thomas married (MRIN:4540) Susannah Harkes GARBRAND-7626 on 3 Apr 1622 in Amersham, Bucks, England.

BIOGRAPHY: The Dictionary of American Biography states that it is possible that he attended a school at Market Bosworth, about 25 miles from Marfield,
established by Sir Wolstan Dixie with two fellowships at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, one of which was later held by Rev. Thomas Hooker. He entered Queen's College, Cambridge, and passed to Emmanuel College from which he received the degree of A.B. in 1608 and that of A.M. in 1611. From 1609-1618 he was Dixie fellow at Emmanuel. About 1620, he became rector of Esher, Surrey, the living being one which did not require the approbation of a bishop. His puritan leanings became more developed at this time and he fell much under the influence of the Rev. John Rogers of Dedham. Efforts were made to settle him at Colchester but for some reason, were unsuccessful, and about 1625 he became lecturer at St. Mary's Chelmsford. There, his preaching attracted public attention and the malevolent eye of
Archbishop Laud. In 1629, Archbishop Laud resolved to silence him for non-conformist teachings, though he was not a Seperatist. Hooker hoped he would not be brought before the High Commission and that he could leave the diocese peaceably. He was forced to retire from Chelmsford and went to Little Baddow, not far away,
where he opened a school with the celebrated John Eliot as his assistant. In 1630, the spiritual court sitting at Chelmsford bound Hooker in the sum of 50 pounds to appear before the High Commission, and a Puritan farmer went surety for him. Several of Hooker's friends raised the amount necessary to indemnify the good farmer, and Hooker abandoned his bond and fled to Holland about June 1631. (Mark Cole Spangler Homepage)

Gorton Howard was born in Foster, R. I., September 4, 1784; married, November 12, 1812, Mary Cranston (b. April 1, 1787), second daughter of Peleg and Elizabeth (Babcock) Cranston. In 1811 he sold to his brother Daniel his interest in a farm which for about seven years they had owned together. In 1820 he purchased the main portion of the farm originally owned and settled by his grandfather Isaac Howard. In 1831 he erected a new house upon the old foundation where stood the one erected by his grandfather in 1756. Here he lived the rest of his life.
He was a cooper and worked at his trade in fall and winter months, tilling his farm the rest of the year, earning a competence and accumulating sufficient to classify him as a prosperous citizen. At the age of 86 years he prepared the staves and set up and headed over one hundred barrels. He was an active politician of the Jeffersonian school, but declined public office himself; consented, however, to serve from 1834 to 1837 as clerk of the town school committee. He was an ardent advocate of  temperance, but belonged to no societies. His wife died July 20, 1863. He died October 2, 1874.

Hon. Daniel Howard was born in Foster (then a part of Scituate), R.I., July 20, 1752. He attended school two winters - six months in all - which was the only schooling he ever received. The tuition for this he paid himself after he had grown to manhood. He supplemented this education by private study, and was in the fullest sense a self-made man. He married, February 14, 1776, Dorothy Clarke (b. June 6, 1758), youngest daughter of William and Mary (Medbury) Clarke. By his father's will he received a legacy of one hundred dollars. He acquired possession of forty acres of his father's farm, to which he added by the purchase of adjacent land; built a house upon the forty-acre tract, which, after his death, was the home of his son Gardner and is the first residence south of the Howard Hill schoolhouse. In personal appearance he is said to have resembled President Jackson. His height was six feet five inches. In the Revolutionary War he was a militia man.
It is shown by the records of the Bureau of Pensions at Washington, D. C., that he first enlisted in 1775; that he performed short terms of service, usually for one month, each year from 1775 to 1781, aggregating fourteen month and ten days, under Captains Stephen Sheldon, William Howard, Jonathan Wright, Isaac Hopkins, and Samuel Wilbur; that obtained the rand of Sergeant. His widow made application for a pension September 3, 1836, and was pensioned at $71.66 per annum from March 4, 1831.
His name also appears on Manuscript Document No. 492 of the Rhode Island Military Papers on file at the rooms of the Rhode Island Historical Society. This document is the muster roll of the company commanded by Capt. Allen Johnson in Lient.-Col. Thomas Tillinghast's regiment. From this roll it appears that on August 8, 1781, Daniel Howard enlisted in the service of the United States for one month. Part and perhaps all of his military service was rendered in the vicinity of Newpor, R. I.
In civil life he was preeminent among his townsmen. He was for fifteen years justice of peace, and important office under the system then in vogue. He represented his town in the General Assembly, serving in that capacity in 1790, the year that Rhode Island ratified the Constitution and joined the Union. In 1803 he was elected town clerk of Foster, and to this office he was reelected twenty-four times, and on but one of these elections was there any opposing candidate.  He was serving his twenty-fifth year at the time of his death. In 1802 he became judge of the Rhode Island Court of Common Pleas, which position he held till 1809. His knowledge of the law was deep and extensive. Governor Fenner once said of him: "He is right ninety-nine times out of one-hundred." He was argumentative yet patient in disposition and calm in judgment. He died September 14, 1827. His widow died January 19, 1843. Their graves are in the family lot on the original estate of his father in Foster.
