Smith Family Reunion
Descendants of Nicholas and Catherine Smith Meet at the Home of Mr. and Mrs. Willia Wakefield, Turin.
The fourth reunion of descendants of Nicholas and Catherine Smith, was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wakefield, Turin, June 8 with fifty-seven members in attendance. A very attractive feature of the dining table was a beautiful cake made by Mrs. Lawrence Walsemann in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Adelbert Smith, of Los Angeles, Calif. After a bountiful dinner order was called for the business session and officers were re-elected-as follows: Leland Walsemann, president, Iva Brennan, vice-president; Sadie Smith, secretary; Susan Smith, treasurer; resolution committee, Pearl Higgs and Sadie Smith; table committee, Lavina Millard and Lillian Walsemann; entertainment committee, Emma Brennon and Pearl Higgs. There has been on death and one birth reported since the last meeting. Resolutions on the death of Mrs. Eva Kidney Smith were read and accepted. The sports committee took charge and prizes were awarded to John Rowsam, the oldest member; the youngest Evelyn Millard; coming the longest distance, Mr. and Mrs. Adelbert Smith; best looking lady, Jessie Archer; best looking man, Cephas Smith; one eating the most, Everett Rowsam; the largest family, Mr. and Mrs. E. Knight; fat ladies race, Mrs. Lee Walsemann; thin ladies race, Alvira Knight; little girls race, Wilhemenia Walsemann, little boys race, Donald Walsemann; young men’s race, Vernon Walsemann, thin men’s race, Carle Walsemann; potato race by Alvira Knight and Lee Walsemann. City Women Dies at 77
Mrs. Myrtle Knight Briot, 77, of 302 High St., widow of John M. Briot of Croghan, died at 6:18 Tuesday night in the Mercy Hospital, where she had been a patient since April 14. Death was attributed to a heart condition and pulmonary edema and followed an illness of about two weeks. Surviving her are five children, all born of her first marriage, Mrs. Elvira P. Knight Moody, 302 High St., Mrs. Cyrus (Gladys Knight) Church and Spencer E. Knight, Lowville. Leland Albert Knight, Croghan, and Mrs. George (Ethel Knight) Moses, Orange Park, Fla.: two brothers, Leonard Smith, Vernon, N.Y., and Leander Smith, Chadwicks, N.Y.: and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was born in the Town of Montague Aug. 25, 1893, a daughter of Cephus and Lillian Smith. She was married first to Elijah S. Knight of Lowville on Sept. 18, 1912 and subsequently they lived at Lowville and then at Houseville, where he died May 10, 1938 at the age of 51. The funeral will be Friday afternoon at 1:30 at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home. Rev. Robert F. Nay, pastor of the Bethany Methodist Church will officiate. Burial with be in the West Lowville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
