BIOGRAPHY: Re: Shenyang and pictures please

From: Ao Wang

Dear Father Phillips,
My name is Ao Wang and my organization is "Truth Council for WWII in Asia".  I met you many times during the last three or four ADBC's conferences.  I mentioned to you about visits to the Mukden Camp during a ride together to the airport.  We have had visits to the old Mukden camp sites since 2002.  Allen and Bob Rosendahl went back with my group in 2003. We are seeing some fruits from those visits because the city is now agreed to have a Mukden Memorial Museum there and has been working day and night so that it will be ready for the 18th of August's dedication. Please see the copied letter from Dr. Cynthia Caples of the US Consulate at Shenyang. Also please send pictures or stories directly to her if you have any. It will be displayed at the 918 Memorial at Shenyang now and moved to the Mukden Memorial when it is completed. The city of Shenyang has set the 18th of August as the day of dedication for the Mukden POW campsite which is getting a work over now. The old campsite will become a memorial museum for all POWs who were interned there. Janiece Cohn, whose father was interned at Mukden, will be there in August. I am working now to get a group to go in September.  My organization has a fund raising memorial concert on September 18 and hopefully the proceeds can be divided evenly to help those who are going.
Hope you can join us in September.  Please pass the words around and thanks.
Take care and best wishes.
Ao

Subject: Need photographs of Camp Hoten and its inmates
Dear veterans of Camp Hoten, and family members of veterans,
Do any of you have photographs of Camp Hoten and its inmates which you could transmit electronically to the U.S. Consulate in Shenyang, for potential use in a photo exhibit in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II?  The Shenyang Cultural Bureau has applied for permission to host a Thursday Aug. 18 memorial ceremony at the city's 9-18 Museum dedicated to the sufferings of Liaoning Province and the rest of Northeast China under Japanese occupation (the first shots were fired here on Sept. 18, 1931, hence the museum's name). Assuming official approval comes through, the American and Russian Consuls General will attend and give speeches about the American and Russian contributions to victory in the Pacific Theater of World War II.  The Russians say they are planning to mount an exhibit of about 40 photographs of their troops in Manchuria in August 1945. We would also like to mount some photographs of the American POWs who spent nearly three years in Camp Hoten in Mukden (the old name for Shenyang), but we don't have any.  Does anyone have any photographs they would be willing to let us use (duly credited) for this purpose?
Please let me know.

11 Nov., 1942 - 1188 U.S. enlisted men (ordinary soldiers) and 14 officers arrive in Mukden (Shenyang) from Manila via Korean Peninsula as American POWs, sent to POW Camp Hoten No. 1, then a group of old Chinese Army earth huts half underground (an additional 60 English and 40 Australian and New Zealand troops have joined them, live in Barracks No. 13; there are eventually 19 barracks in all)

March 1943 - burial of 176 POWs, most of whom died in the first 90 days at Camp Hoten; by summer 1943, a total of 205 have died, more than 17% of the American enlisted men in Camp Hoten

July 1943 - the camp is moved to a new location, two-story brick structures c. four miles away, about half a mile from the Mitsubishi Ko-Kan Machine and Tool Factory, a former Ford Co. factory where some of the camp inmates work under Chinese supervision, disassembling machinery so that Japanese Technicians can make blueprints of it; camp inmates also work as farm and construction labor; new camp is an improvement on the old one, and rations are increased slightly, to above starvation level; at this point, 11 American and 2-3 British officers are still alive

June 1944 - c. 150 American POWs sent from Camp Hoten to Kamioka, Japan, to work in the lead mines there, as punishment for sabotaging work at the Mitsubishi Factory in Mukden (Linda Goetz Holmes, 'Unjust Enrichment')

7 December 1944 - Allied B-29 air raids on Shenyang factories and rail lines drop two bombs within the Camp Hoten perimeter, killing 19 of the POWs, and injuring more than 30

April 1945 - 316 senior officers, orderlies, and four civilians (mostly American, British, and Dutch generals and colonels; senior officer is U.S. Maj. Gen. George M. Parker, Jr.) are moved to Camp Hoten from Camp Chang Chia Gen. Jonathan Wainwright, highest-ranking American POW, and a few close aides and officers, is held elsewhere in Liaoning, at Si'an (Japanese: Seihan), along with Britain's highest-ranking POW, Gen. A. E. Percival, former commander of Singapore

5 August 1945 - newly-appointed International Committee of the Red Cross head delegate to Tokyo Dr. Marcel Junod visits Mukden en route to Tokyo, first visit to Camp Hoten by an ICRC representative

6 August 1945 - Dr. Junod visits Gen. Wainwright at Si'an

8 August 1945 - Russia enters the Pacific War

17 August 1945 - four-man American OSS parachute group arrives in Shenyang

18 August 1945 - low-flying Allied plane scatters leaflets announcing that Japan has surrendered

20 August 1945 - advance Soviet tank units enter Shenyang

9 September 1945 - American POWs leave Camp Hoten No. 1 to return home

Not so peaceful were these shores during the War of 1812, as a British cannon ball now in the possession of Mrs. Charles Lathrop Pack, but long buried not far from Ebenezer Hatch's ferry, give evidence. It is the souvenir of an eventual night when a British war craft sighted, as its crew supposed, through the mists of the night an American boat near the shore, and determined on capture or destruction, sent at intervals throughout the night, their most telling cannon balls, only to find at the dawn that their ammunition had been wasted on a huge bowlder off the coast which still stood sentinel unharmed by the onslaught. (The Cannon ball was found on the farm of Mr. Homer Knight, given by him to Mr. C. L. Parmenter of Montpelier, came to Mrs. Pack from Mr. Parmenter.)

Looking for descendants of Noel KNIGHT (b. Dec. 2, 1769 in RI?, d. Feb. 7, 1833 in Cattaraugus County, NY). Noel KNIGHT married Martha WHITE of Pomfret, Windham County, CT. daughter of Adams WHITE, in 1792). They moved to New Woodstock, NY before 1797. Their children are:
1. Gorton KNIGHT (b. July 23, 1793 in CT, d. Oct. 28, 1793 in Clinton County, NY)
2. Ralph KNIGHT (b. Dec. 18, 1796 in NY, d. Dec. 29, 1872 in NY)
3. Phila KNIGHT (b. Mar 7, 1801 in NY d. Dec. 16, 1863 where?)
4. William KNIGHT (b. Aug. 25, 1803 in NY, d. Dec. 7, 1841 in IA)
5. George KNIGHT (b. Oct. 28, 1809 in NY d. Aug. 21, 1879 in Placer County, CA)
6. Charles KNIGHT (b. Sept. 14, 1813 in NY d. )
7. Martha KNIGHT (b. Feb. 15, 1815 in NY d. May 21, 1841 in IA)
Gorton KNIGHT married Marcena ALGER and lived in Boston, Erie County, NY. Gorton and Marcena had (4) children: Daniel S., Edward G., Oliver R., and Daniel KNIGHT). They moved to Freedom, Cattaraugus County, NY where descendants now live. Other descendants from this branch were/are in Warren County, PA. After Marcena's death, Gorton married Chloe and moved to Clinton County, IA with his son, Edward G. KNIGHT.

Ralph KNIGHT married Olive ACKLEY and remained in New Woodstock, NY all his life. Their children are Charles, James E., Ralph G., Harriet A., Cynthia, and Martha Louisa KNIGHT.

Phila KNIGHT married Almond CURTIS (from Vermont) and resided in Holland Township, Erie County, NY. Both may have been previously married. Children are Hiram, Charles, Mary, and Phily CURTIS. (2) other children, Nathan and William, could be from Almond's 1st marriage.

William KNIGHT married Roxanna ALGER from Boston, Erie County, NY. They had (5) children: William C., Marsena M., Orfany (Fanny), Permelia, and Phila KNIGHT. They also lived in Freedom, Cattaraugus County, NY but moved to Clinton County, IA in 1838.

George KNIGHT married Elvira STIVERS from Meigs County, OH. They had (5) children: Noel, Matilda, Lewis W., John S., and Malvina KNIGHT. George KNIGHT left his family in OH to go west with the 49-ers. His 2nd marriage was to Elizabeth DEMAREE who was born in OH.

Charles KNIGHT appearantly died before he was married. His date of death is unknown to me.

Martha KNIGHT married Saral (Serrill) ALGER of Boston, Erie County, NY. They may have had children. After Saral's death (ca 1838 in Illinois), Martha married Saral's brother, Lyman ALGER. They couple lived in Clinton County, IA. They had one child, Delos ALGER.

Hi Cousin!

Although Noel Knight is descended from Jonathan Knight, he is not a child, rather a great grandchild. The line is: Richard Knight>Jonathan Knight>Captain Robert Knight>Captain Edward Knight>Noel Knight. Richard Knight married Sarah Rogers, Jonathan Knight married Rebecca (Hannah) Bennett, Capt. Robert Knight married Mary Potter, Capt. Edward Knight married Patience Gorton, Noel married Martha White, daughter of Adams White and Hannah Capron. According to family Bible information, Noel Knight was born Dec. 2, 1769 and died Feb. 7, 1833. He lived in New Woodstock, Madison County, NY. Just wondering how exactly you are descended from Jonathan Knight. Please let me know!

F vii Martha Minerva KNIGHT-KPQF-KJN was born on 15 Feb 1815. She died on 21 May 1841.

Adams WHITE was born on 17 Feb 1744/1745 in Mendon, Worcester, Massachusetts. He died on 16 Sep 1832 in Brooklyn, Windham, Connecticut. Adams married (MRIN:2240) Hannah CAPRON on 25 Jan 1767 in Smithfield, Providence, Rhode Island.

Hannah CAPRON [Parents] was born on 27 Oct 1743 in Bellingham, Norfolk, Massachusetts. She died on 8 Mar 1826 in Brooklyn, Windham, Connecticut. Hannah married (MRIN:2240) Adams WHITE on 25 Jan 1767 in Smithfield, Providence, Rhode Island.

They had the following children.

  F i Martha WHITE-LHZ1-WQ2 was born on 1 Nov 1774. She died on 7 Mar 1815.

Gorton Warwick KNIGHT [Parents]-L4TV-39Y was born on 23 Jul 1793 in Pomfret, Windham, Connecticut. He died on 28 Oct 1873 in Olive, Clinton, Iowa. He was buried in Mowder Cemetery, Calamus, Clinton, Iowa. Gorton married (MRIN:2241) Chloe HATCH-LHZ1-3BK in 1855.

Other marriages:
ALGER, Marcena

BIOGRAPHY: Gorton KNIGHT married Marcena ALGER and lived in Boston, Erie County, NY. KNIGHT.

The 1850 census for Gorton KNIGHT shows Marcena (name looks like "Miralia") and the census enumerator errored on her gender. There is also a Mary WINSLOW, age 8, living with them, but no Hiram nor Mernerva. In the 1855 NY State census, Mary WINSLOW is now Mary KNIGHT and 13 years old. Relationship listed as "granddaughter". This is a mystery. In 1852 or 53, Gorton's son, Edward G. KNIGHT and family moved back to Cattaraugus County from Clinton County, IA. They are still there in 1860, but in 1865 they are back in Iowa. I found a cemetary record for Gorton. He is buried at Mowder Cemetary near the Wapsipinicon River in Olive Township, Clinton County, Iowa. I do not know much about Gorton. Ralph, Gorton's brother, is my direct line. History books say that Ralph was probably the oldest, white male child born in Madison County, NY. I have all lines of Noel KNIGHT very well documented, except those of his daughter, Phila. Noel KNIGHT is a descendant of Richard KNIGHT and Sarah ROGERS of Rhode Island.

DEATH: Died in Olive Township, Clinton County, Iowa on 28 October 1873 and is buried at Mowder Cemetery which is located in the southern part of Olive Township, Clinton County, Iowa near the Wapsipinicon River. Also buried there is his 2nd wife, Chloe Knight. The source (Mowder Cemetery listings page 2) says: "(the above Knights and St. John enclosed on Fenced Lot)".

DEATH: Gorton has (2) tombstones! One is in Mowder Cemetery, near Calamus, Clinton County, Iowa and the other is in Elton Cemetery, Delevan, New York! The tombstone in Iowa is next to his 2nd wife, Chloe. His tombstone in Elton, NY is next to his first wife, Marcena. The tombstone in Elton mentions that Gorton fought in the War of 1812. There is an Andrew and Sally Knight buried near Gorton's marker in Delevan. Andrew Knight fought also in the War of 1812. Doubt Andrew is related. If so, he would have to have been from Capt. Edward Knight or beyond. He may be the one from Farmerville, NY. enumerated in the 1850 census born in RI.

Ralph KNIGHT [Parents]-KJWZ-5D8 was born on 18 Dec 1796 in New Woodstock, Madison, New York. He died on 29 Dec 1872 in New Woodstock, Madison, New York. Ralph married (MRIN:2242) Olive B. ACKLEY-KL6W-VJK on 24 Sep 1823.

BIOGRAPHY: "New Woodstock and Vicinity Past and Present" by Ellsworth and Richmond, page 14. ""Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Smith in 1803 adopted Ralph Knight, born December 18, 1796, said to be the oldest white male child born in the town. His parents were Noel and Martha Knight. He was the second of seven children. His birthplace was on the Sheds Corners road and he was the only one of the family remaining in New Woodstock until his death in 1872. He married in 1823 Olive Ackley. They had six children. Two died in infancy..."." Book "New Woodstock and Vicinity Past and Present" by Mrs. Anzolette D. Ellsworth and Miss Mary E. Richmond on page 14.
A carpenter by trade (per 1850 NY Census).

The 1850 NY Census has his surname as "Kight" instead of "Knight". This also applies to those living in his household which includes Olive, James, and Ralph Jr. They are on pages 105 or 106 of the 1850 NY Census in Cazenovia Township.

In the 1870 Census right under Ralph and Olive (ACKLEY) KNIGHT, there is a Horatio KNIGHT (born 1841-1842 in NY) with wife, Lavinia (born: 1849-1850 in NY). They have one child, Minnie KNIGHT (born April 1870 in NY). Horatio KNIGHT is a blacksmith and has a shop, perhaps on Ralph KNIGHT's property. There is also a Cornelia KNIGHT, age 54, (born 1815-1816 in NY) living with them. This is a mystery.

From the LDS IGI File: "Horatio KNIGHT Sex:Â  M Event(s): Born:Â  1841 Onondaga', 'New York Parents:
? ,Source Information: Film Number: 1903876".

Ralph Knight was mentioned in a book titled "History of Madison County - State of New York" on page 240. The book mentions that he is still living in 1869 and is the oldest native of New Woodstock alive by that year. It also confirms his birthplace of New Woodstock, Madison County, NY and birth date of Dec. 18, 1796.

New Woodstock is in Southern Cazenovia Township. He is listed in a late 1800's publication on the history of New Woodstock and was said to be eccentric because he often didn't wear a coat to church in the middle of winter. He was a carpenter by trade.

Ralph Knight's middle initial could be "G".

Almond CURTIS [Parents] was born on 14 Feb 1792 in Norwich, Windsor, Vermont. He died on 29 Jan 1861 in Holland, Erie, New York. He was buried in Humphrey Center Cemetery, Holland, Erie, New York. Almond married (MRIN:2243) Phila KNIGHT-LCJ4-MCT on 21 Jan 1835.

BIOGRAPHY: May be referred to as Almond. I'm hoping this is the A. Curtis, president of the Botanical Medical College in 1840, mentioned in Frederick Morgan's obituary.(his son-in-law), but it would have been tricky to be in Ohio at the correct time. Beginning to think it's more likely it was another A. Curtis, but possibly still related. Need to research this yet. Note dates for Almon's children born around 1840 in New York. He had 18 children in all. One source says Almon was born in Piermont, VT.
All family information on Almon was found in a loose paper in the files of the (N.Y.?)Historical Society titled "Curtis family-written March 17,1884 by Lucy Curtis to Newton Curtis of North Collins, NY." This letter also refers to a "Lucy Edith Curtis-died Dec.14,1868, buried in Protection,NY." This is besides Lucy Moulton Curtis who is listed to have died on Jun.15, 1868 in Portection, NY. I can't find a Lucy Edith anywhere else in the letter, so don't know what relationship she is. Or if she is the same person with two different dates. Newton Curtis is also listed as "married a Kirby, died in North Collins, NY, had 2 girls", but I don't know his relationship. Other names mentioned without stating the relationship are...."Bernice Curtis married Harold Ruhling and lived in North Collins" and "Myrtle Curtis married Stanley Conrad and lived in N.Collins. lived to 105 (July 12,1959)". These must have been additional notes, since the original letter was written in 1884.
A copy of this letter was sent to me from Chris Knight, a cousin, descendent of Almon Curtis and his second wife Phila Knight.
Almon is listed in the DAR records of Mrs. Myrtle Morton Bragg Speer DAR records, #102264.

Phila KNIGHT [Parents]-LCJ4-MCT was born on 7 Mar 1801 in New Woodstock, Madison, New York. She died on 16 Dec 1863 in Holland, Erie, New York. She was buried in Humphrey Center Cemetery, Holland, Erie, New York. Phila married (MRIN:2243) Almond CURTIS on 21 Jan 1835.

Married: Phila KNIGHT married Almond CURTIS (from Vermont) and resided in Holland Township, Erie County, NY. Both may have been previously married. Children are Hiram, Charles, Mary, and Phily CURTIS. (2) other children, Nathan and William, could be from Almond's 1st marriage.
