NEIGHBOR FINDS BODY
Donald G. Knight Ends Life By Hanging at Home in Delevan
Specie to The Buffalo Express
Delevan - Feb. 14 - Donald G. Knight, 63 years old, committed suicide shortly after 4 o'clock this afternoon by hanging himself in his barn. His daughter, Miss Della Knight who lives at home became worried at his absence and went to the home of Dr. Myron E. Fisher a neighbor. Dr. Fisher went to the barn and found the lifeless body hanging from the end of a rope. Mr. Knight was apparently in good health and no reason is given for this act. Surviving besides the daughter mentioned are three children, Mrs. Ralph Daggett of Freedom; Gerald Knight of Ellen and Everett Knight of this village. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.

Etta R. FISHER [Parents]-4158 was born in May 1861 in New York. She died in 1912 in Cattaraugus County, New York. She was buried in Delevan Cemetery, Delevan, Cattaraugus, New York. Etta married Daniel Greene KNIGHT-3563.

Primus EMERSON-6737 was born in 1815 in Massachusetts. He died in Jun 1877 in Saint Louis, Saint Louis, Missouri. He was buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery, Saint Louis, Saint Louis, Missouri. Primus married Mary Ellis WARE-6738 on 13 Dec 1857 in Saint Louis, Saint Louis, Missouri.

BIOGRAPHY: http://carondeletcity.tripod.com/emerson.html
Citizens of the City of Carondolet
Primus Emerson brought boat building to the Carondolet area of St. Louis in 1853. He and two St. Louis businessmen bought riverfront property near the mouth of the River des Peres. There they opened the Carondelet Marine Railway & Dock Company. The venture cost $150,000 & included Emerson's own patented marine railway. The marine railway consisted of a set of rails & cranes that could run a boat down into the water, or up into the drydocks. During the Civil War, he left Carondelet for Memphis where he built the ironclad ship "Arkansas" for the Confederate navy. After the war, he returned to the Carondelet boatyards. In May 1866, part of the boatyards were destroyed by fire. The losses, which were not insured, were estimated by Emerson to be $60,000. Local papers believed it was an act of arson, either as an act of vengeance on the former Confederate, or by disgruntled workmen. Emerson died at the age of 61 & was interred on June 10, 1877. BIOGRAPHY: Salvation Mountain
The Osgood File (CBS Radio Network): 8/21/03
The Osgood File (CBS Radio Network): 5/15/03
Man-made mountain proclaims God's message of love in California desert.
Visitors driving into the heart of California's vast, dry, desert in the Imperial Valley are often transfixed by a looming sight on the horizon. Salvation Mountain rises 50-feet high, an entirely man-made creation out of bales of hay, adobe, concrete, car parts and many gallons of paint, topped by a white cross. Across its bright, sculpted surface are the words "God is Love" in red and pink. A verse from John adorns one side, while the "sinner's prayer" covers the front: "Jesus, I'm a sinner. Please come upon my body and into my heart." Hearts and flowers are interspersed among the Scriptural verses and yellow steps lead to the top. Leonard Knight is the 72-year-old man who has made this mountain his life’s work. The story begins in 1965, when alone and overcome by having sinned, Knight decided to repent to Jesus. (The only sin he’ll confess is swearing.) Overcome with the feeling of forgiveness, he cried. Ever since, he has tried to dedicate himself to spreading the message of God's love in a most untraditional manner. Twenty years later, Knight landed in Niland, CA. He intended to stay for a week and build a small, eight-foot-high mountain to proclaim God’s love. He got the idea from seeing a hot air balloon emblazoned with advertisements. Since then, the mountain has grown taller and wider, about 100 feet long, says Knight. He made it from clay and adobe and the donations of an estimated 100,000 gallons of paint. It attracts between 40 to over 100 people a day, says Knight.
Salvation Mountain has received attention from tourists and museum directors alike. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) entered it into the Congressional record last May, proclaiming it a national treasure. It also has been honored by the American Folk Art Society, the subject of a documentary and on the cover of a book about visionary folk art in America. Knight says his inspiration for how to design the mountain comes from God. "I pray a lot," he says. "I try to keep it very simple. The message is 'God is love.'" Rebecca Hoffberger, director of the American Visionary Art Museum, in Baltimore, Maryland, says she chose Knight's truck to be included in a 1996 exhibit titled "Wind in My Hair." Hoffberger says a common theme among visionary, or self-taught, artists like Knight is the recreation of the Garden of Eden. In all religions, she says there is the desire to bring heaven to earth, either by controlling one's actions or influencing one's backyard. She says Knight leads a simple life, using only a bicycle to get around town and bathing in nearby hot springs, and works all day on his mountain, full of purpose. She has spent a lot of time with Knight and says his work is genuinely infused with his spirituality. "I was very proud to show Leonard because he lives his art," she says.

Salvation Mountain:
The Art of Leonard Knight
with commentary by Leonard Knight,
photographs by Larry Yust and an introduction by Holly Metz.
Leonard Knight has been painting a mountain in the California desert for fifteen years and Larry Yust has been photographing it for six. This book is the result of their chance meeting and growing friendship and collaboration. Explore the mountain in forty-two, full page color plates - startling images of graffiti at its best - an interworking of brilliant color and evocative design and lettering like none you've ever seen before. Hear Leonard Knight explain in his own words why and how he's done what he's done, and learn why he prefers 'to let his mountain do the talking.' The ever-evolving work-in-progress that is Salvation Mountain is widely recognized as one of the most unique and important examples of outsider art ever created. Salvation Mountain: The Art of Leonard Knight will show you why. Leonard Knight was born on November 2, 1931, and grew up with five brothers and sisters on a thirty-two acre farm near Shelbourne Falls, Vermont. He attended a one-room grammar school and dropped out of high school after the tenth grade. He went to work repairing automobiles until he was drafted. He was sent to Korea and was promoted to acting sergeant. After the war he alternated periods in Vermont with travel back and forth across the United States, living in whatever vehicle he was driving and supporting himself with odd jobs. Along the way, he became converted to evangelical Christianity. He spent five years building a hot air balloon nearly three hundred feet high, carrying the message that God is Love, and trying, unsuccessfully, to fly it. He finally gave up when the fabric of the balloon rotted, and found himself in the desert near Niland, California in 1985 and went to work creating Salvation Mountain. Currently Leonard hosts fifty to one hundred visitors to his mountain each day. In all, thousands of visitors from all over the world have made this out-of-the-way journey to visit Salvation Mountain. Leonard is still happily at work painting and sculpting this enormous work in progress.

Artist Leonard Knight Creates Salvation MountainUpdated: Monday, 10 Jan 2011

Leonard Knight's message is simple, "God is love." It is his artwork, spread over a hillside, that is massive.  Knight is the creator of Salvation Mountain, located about an hour and a half from Palm Springs, Calif. The mountain, according to its website , includes Christian scripture such as the Lord's Prayer and the Sinner's Prayer as well as flowers, waterfalls, bluebirds and other brightly colored objects.  "From a mile or so away, it looks like a candy-colored explosion against the side of a mountain," wrote AOL News contributor Chris Epting.  The creation is located just outside of Niland, Calif. An online history of Salvation Mountain claims it's Knight's second attempt after the first, made of too much sand, crumbled.  Knight originally meant to create and launch a hot air balloon with the words "God is Love." After 14 years of attempts he figured that idea wasn't going to fly.  The first mountain took another four years. When he started on his second he used a native adobe clay that he coats with paint.  That, too, almost met its demise. The site's website stated that Imperial County officials had hired a toxic waste specialist who found contaminants such as lead in the soil.  Supporters of Knight's circulated petitions and Knight dug soil samples that showed no problems with contamination. His masterpiece stays, protected by Sen. Barbara Boxer who AOL News claimed designated it as a "national treasure."  Roadside America said guests are likely to see Knight still painting. He asks for donations of paint and continues fixing up his masterpiece, which along with the hill will include a museum that he is making out of scavenged wood, old tires and adobe.  "I just meditate about God and Jesus mostly," Knight told AOL News when asked what keeps him going. "I think about what the world will be like when everyone knows God loves them."  Knight, 79, still lives in a truck located on the property. Kevin Eubank, a nearby resident, helps take care of him. Eubank told AOL News that Knight is almost blind and almost deaf but is still working on his masterpiece.  "His faith, dedication and just basic sense of goodness are something to behold," Eubank said. "That's what draws people out here."
