In 1805, the first early settler in Benton Township, Ezra Basset, came here from Plainfield, Connecticut. Ezra built his log cabin in a spot called "Prickly Ash Flats," now covered by the upper end of Lackawanna Lake. North Abington Township settlement came in 1812, with the arrival of Asa Knight. Following these early settlers were Archibald Knight, Daniel Long, Ira Lewis, Peter Cole, John Lewin, Leonard Hopfer, John Kennedy, Alfred Fisk, William Foster and members of the Carpenter Family. The settlements along the old Route 407 in North Abington Township became known as Carpentertown named for this latter family. These ambitious New England Yankees cleared the land and developed farms to make a better life for themselves and their families.

DEATH: Coventry, Rhode Island Historical Cemeteries
By Dr. Bill Eddleman and John E. Sterling
1998
Maple Root Cemetery CY135
This cemetery is located 25 feet south of Harkney Hill Road, directly across from the Maple Road Baptist Church. It contains about 1100 burials burials with 781 inscribed stones. It is surrounded by granite posts with iron rails. Plainland Cemetery. CY050, lies just east of Maple Root Cemetery.
This is a very old cemetery containing many crudely inscribed fieldstones for the earliest settlers in this area. This is probably the most interesting cemetery in Coventry. Apparently it what we are calling section 1 for the Greene family, overlooking Maple Root Pond. These Greenes are descendants of John Greene of Quidnessett, through  his son John (1688 - 1756) who is the first marked burial in this cemetery. Section H, to the north of section 1, started as a Nichols family lot and then Weaver, Johnson, Andrews and Fish burials were added later. Records at Town Hall indicate that this cemetery later became a proprietor cemetery. The first lot in this never section was sold to Philip Johnson on 7 Nov 1893.
James Arnold visited between October 9 and 13, 1905, Vol. 6, Book H and I, page 773, "At Maple Root Church is a cemetery, the lots are much neglected, the yard is enclosed by granite posts and iron rails and wall on back side, all in good order."

William Stone (1048) married Lydia Westcott, removed from Cranston to Coventry, some time about the year 1770, and spent the rest of his life on a farm near Coventry Centre. On his farm was a corn mill, which, during his life, and years after, was the principal manufactory of corn or Indian meal, for a large circle of surrounding farmers and mechanics. The estate has recently been purchased by Pardon S. Peckham, an enterprising manufacturer, and the prospect now is, that a large manufactory will occupy nearly the site of the "Old Mill," and a village of mechanics and artisans take the place of the four or five houses, which, for the last hundred years, has overlooked that valley. William Stone (1048) was a man of correct business habits, and his education above the ordinary young men of his day. He was a Justice of the Peace before leaving the town of Cranston, and the strictly moral principle and correct judgment by which he acted, gave him influence in all the relations which he sustained. Soon after he removed to Coventry, he was elected Town Clerk, which office he held for many years; held until his age and infirmities led him to resign, and retire from those public duties which he had so long and so satisfactorily performed. He died about the year 1819. He was an active Christian, of the Baptist denomination, and among the first to establish the church in his neighborhood.

Lydia WESTCOTT [Parents] was born in 1735 in Cranston, Providence, Rhode Island. She died on 24 Apr 1827 in Coventry, Kent, Rhode Island. She was buried in Woodland Cemetery, Coventry, Kent, Rhode Island. Lydia married (MRIN:1854) William STONE in 1758.

F i Lydia STONE was born on 2 Sep 1764. She died on 4 Oct 1854.

THE SUSQUEHANNA DEMOCRAT (1823)

Distressing Accident. On Friday last, in the afternoon, Jonathan HUBBARD, of Greenfield, in this county, went a short distance in the woods to set a Bear-Trap and that Archibald KNIGHT, of Abington, was at the same time in the woods hunting. Mr. HUBBARD was seen in a stooping posture by Mr. KNIGHT, and being dressed in dark clothes was taken for a bear. Mr. KNIGHT fired, and Mr. HUBBARD fell; the ball passing completely through him. His death was almost instantaneous. The deceased has left a wife and a number of children, to mourn his afflicting death - in which another warning is given - "Be ye also ready, for in such an hour as ye know not, the Son of man cometh."
