Ebenezer Abbe removed with his father in 1698 to a locality known as the "Bricktop"; worked in Norwich for a time (about 1705); was at Windham in 1706; and later lived in North Windham and Mansfield. In November 1705 two deeds were recorded showing an exchange of property between Samuel Abbe and Ebenezer of Norwich -- a lot on Bushnell's Plain. Ebenezer received another deed from Samuel on 17 July 1707 and sold land to Abraham Mitchell and William Slate in 1709 and 1711. On 29 October 1713, John Abbe, "now resident at Hartford," sold his brother Ebenezer land he had received from his father. In 1715, Ebenezer settled at Hampton Hill in the northeast part of Windham County. On 9 May 1717, he signed a petition asking the General Assembly to authorize the formation of Canada parish, and the following October he put his name to a second petition to use the property taxes of the parish to establish its church. On 8 September 1743, Ebenezer sold land in Windham, on the east side of Nauchaug River, to his son Samuel. In his will, dated 3 June 1750, and probated 14 December 1758, he named his wife Mary; children Ebenezer, Joshua, Nathan, Gideon, Samuel, Elizabeth Cross, Zeruiah Marsh, Jerusha Wood, Abigail Cary, Miriam Cross; grandson Jonathan Bingham, only surviving son and heir of his daughter Mary, deceased.

Rev. Knight became connected with the Christian Ministry very early in life, laboring in the interests of the Conregational denomination. He preached for three years in Rome,New York, then went to Sherburne for 21 years. He met  and Married Ruth Talcott while in Sherburne. After the death of his wife, he moved to Vienna,Oneida,New York where he died. He married his step-daughter Polly Kenyon. In the Portrait and Biographical Album of Ogle County, son Hezekiah has a biographical sketch that details his father,Joshua, as coming from Maryland, one of three brothers who immigrated from England. It lists Joshua's marriage to Ruth Talcott, but does not mention the marriage to Polly Kenyon. It is believed that Hezekiah "made up" a story about his father, as he was embarassed about the scandal of Joshua and Polly.

Joshua Knight, brother of Daniel, came to Rome as a supply minister and preached eleven times before there was a regular minister and so marked an impression did he make upon one member of the congregation that when  the subscription paper for a regular minister was passed around, M.   By now they had a parson, a regular minister, the Reverend Moses Gillett. During the years 1800 - 1806, the church had various supply ministers, itinerant pastors or visitors to the neighborhood, such as the Rev. Joshua Knight and Dr. Waterman.

The old Church on the West Hill was organized, as the records also state, "At a meeting of a number of the members of the Calvinistick Congregational Society of Sherburne, holden at the house of Elisha Gray in s'd Sherburne, the 18th day of October, 1803," with eleven constituent members, to wit: Isaac Foote, Sedate Foote, Henry Finn, Margaret Finn, David Dixon, Triphena Dixon, Sarah Talcott, Elizabeth Merrill, Elijah Sexton, Ebenezer Baker, and Gambo Dasset; the latter a colored man, a native of Gambia, Africa. There were soon a large number of additions, and the new Church and Society went prosperously forward. Abram Raymond was the first Deacon, and afterwards Isaac Foote, Jr., and Joseph Adams were also chosen to that office. On the day of the organization, a call was tendered Rev. Joshua Knight, who had previously preached there on several occasions. He was ordained and installed as pastor of that Church at a Council convened at the residence of Major Joseph Dixon on the 29th of February, 1804, remaining in that connection for nearly twenty years, and until he was deposed from the ministry after a long and remarkable trial based upon his expressed purpose to marry his step-daughter, which he did about a year afterwards, on the 22d of October, 1824, both he and his wife being immediately thereafter excommunicated by the Church.

Sheffield's brother Peleg Kinyon passed away about February of 1802 leaving Ruthe a 28 year old widow with a one year old baby named Polly. Sheffield Kinyon was an executor of Peleg's estate along with Asa Gifford and widow Ruthe. Asa Gifford and Hezekiah Talcott, both of the town of Herkimer, bound themselves as the guardians of Hezekiah's granddaughter, the infant Polly Kinyon. Widow Ruthe married a minister by the name of Joshua Knight in 1804 and by 1820 had moved away to Sherburne County. Ruthe and Joshua Knight had eight children before Ruthe died in 1823. After Ruthe died Joshua Knight married his step-daughter Polly Kinyon and they had returned to Newport by the time of the 1830 census. It appears from the Deed record that they may have still been in possession of some of Peleg Kinyon's original land in Newport.

Joshua Knight died in Vienna, Oneida Co., N.Y., June 13, 1853 of dropsy, aged 80 years.
Bro. Knight graduated at Dickinson College in 1798, studied theology at Princeton, N.J., and was ordained to the holy ministry in connection with the Congregationalist Church. Besides exercising his ministry in other places, he held the pastoral charge in Sherburne, Chenango Co., about 20 years, with acceptability and usefulness. On removing to Rome, some 15 years ago, he connected himselp with the Presbyterian Church in that place, but on removing to Vienna about 12 years ago and not finding a society of the denomination of his choice near by he readily connected himself with the M. E. Church as a private member, which relation he maintained to the close of his life. The infirmities of age prevented his taking much part in the affairs of the Church or even appearing in public regularly, for the last few years of his life. His mind, also, was much broken and at times he was much given to despondency, questioning whether it would not at last go ill with him. But when dying grace was needed, dying grace was given. When near the point of death, his faith was greatly strengthened, and he was enabled to rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Among his last expressions he said, “Jesus is mine, and I am his.”

Ruth TALCOTT [Parents]-2234 was born on 5 May 1774 in Herkimer, Herkimer, New York. She died on 22 Jan 1823 in Sherburne, Chenango, New York. She was buried in West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne, Chenango, New York. Ruth married Rev. Joshua KNIGHT-2233 on 6 Mar 1804 in Norway, Herkimer, New York.

B. Sizer wrote, "Two dollars if Mr. Knight remains, nothing without"

BIOGRAPHY: Polly Kenyon was Joshua's Stepdaughter

OBITUARY: Northern Christian Advocate 1847
Polly, the wife of Mr. Joshua Knight, died of consumption, in Vienna, Oneida Co., N.Y., Nov. 3d, 1847, in the 47th year of her age.
She was born in the present town of Newport, Herkimer Co., N.Y, Jan. 1st, 1801, She was converted at the age of 15, and joined the Presbyterian Church, but for above five years has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Much might truly be said in her praise. Her piety was of a still and quiet kind, but shone remarkably bright in her daily walk and conversation. She was very mild, of great meekness, humble and prayerful.
She recommended religion to her children and friends, both by precept and example, and long will her children remember her pious endeavors to bring them up in the fear of God. For several years past her health has been poor, but she was not confined to her bed long at a time, until August, 1816, when she had a severe attack of hemorrhage of the lungs, (of which she has had in all about 35 turns.) From that time she failed gradually through the autumn and winter, but in the spring she appeared to be some better for about two months. Her disease then returned again with renewed strength, and reduced her very low. She conversed but very little, owing to a disease of her throat, which in some measure deprived her of the use of speech. She continued to live beyond the expectation of all who saw her, and through her sufferings were very great, much more than is usual in that disease, yet her patience was greater. During all her sickness not a murmur escaped her lips. In the former part of her sickness she had a great desire to live, that she might take care of her children; but for months before her death, she felt willing to leave them in the hands of the Lord, and was perfectly resigned to his will. During the latter part of her sickness, she was strongly and peculiarly tempted by the enemy, but the prayer of faith brought the victory.
Some weeks before her departure, she said she had a “desire to depart and be with Jesus, and was afraid she should not have patience to wait the Lord's time.” She constantly felt Jesus precious, and to put all her trust in him, saying, “ He is all my stay and staff, and my all.”
On one occasion, when speaking of her sickness being so lingering, she said, “The Lord's time is the best time.” The three nights previous to her last, her sufferings appeared to be greater than in the day time. Speaking of this “ it seemed to me that there were evil spirits about me, tempting me, as they did Job, to give up my patience, but I prayed to the Lord to sustain me, had he has.” At the last her sufferings were very great. When she perceived death drawing near to bear her spirit home, she closed her eyes with her hands, and folded her hands across her breast, and resigned her soul in God, leaving the clay, so late her tabernacle, with a heavenly smile upon its features. Her companion has lost a tender and affectionate wife and her children the guide of their childhood and youth. But their loss is her unspeakable gain. Her sufferings are ended, and she is where she oft has longed to be.
