"HOWARD O. STURGES -- Since boyhood, Mr. Sturges has been a resident of the city of Providence, and in return for the education bestowed and opportunity offered, he has given freely of the strength of his manhood and the wisdom of mature years to the city and her interests. While a senior member of Sturges & Gammell, he has given great attention to cotton manufacturing, and has other important corporate interests, both official and non-official, his interests covering a wide range. His years exceed the scriptural 'three score and ten', and in its course he has manfully met every duty, the record of his life including service in the Union army during that fateful period of the war between the States.
Howard O. Sturges, son of Thomas and Mary (Rush) Sturges, was born in Philadelphia, Pa., February 24, 1845. When young, he came to Providence, R. I., and in the city public schools he obtained his education. He began business life as a bank clerk, continuing two years before becoming interested in cotton manufacturing, a line of activity he has followed for half a century in Providence, now being a member of the firm, Sturges & Gammell, at No. 50 South Main street. He has many other business interests, and during his long and busy life has aided in founding and developing many companies and enterprises which have proved their value to
the city. He is president of the Allen & Read Company, a trustee and a vice-president of the Providence Institution for Savings, a director of the Providence Telephone Company, the Albany & Susquehanna Railroad, Rhode Island Hospital Trust Company, and vice-president of the Providence Building Company. He is deeply interested in mutual fire insurance, and is a director of five companies of that class; the Manufacturers', Rhode Island State, Mechanics', Enterprise, and American. Mr. Sturges served in the Civil War in Company D, Tenth Regiment, Rhode Island Volunteers, enlisting in 1862. He is a member of Rodman Post, Grand Army of the Republic; Hope, Providence, Art, Agawam Hunt, Turk's Head clubs; Squantum Association, and in religious faith is an Episcopalian.
Mr. Sturges married, at Providence, R. I., November 25, 1875, Alice Spring Knight, of Providence, eldest daughter of Benjamin Brayton and Phoebe Ann (Slocum) Knight. Mr. and Mrs. Sturges are the parents of three sons and a daughter: Walter Knight, of whom further; Rush, a sketch of whom follows; Howard, of whom further; and Dorothy.

Lippitt Mill and Related Textile History
By: J.E. Hayes, III

In 1912 Robert Knight died, leaving his son Webster Knight as senior member of the firm. Webster was unable to handle the complex workings of the textile industry, and on October 1st, 1920, by family agreement, the company was sold for $18 million dollars. The new owners, Consolidated Textiles Corporation, reorganized the new B.B. and R. Knight, Inc., with 14 mills and a bleachery. Along with the buildings and property went the highly recognized Fruit of the Loom seal. Two months later the cotton market collapsed, due mainly to the reawakening of the European textile industry.  Grasping at the slim possibility of profitable operation, the new firm cut wages in the Valley by 22.5 percent in the summer of 1921. On Jan. 20, 1922, the wages were cut another 20 percent. Three days later, just as the power was turned on in the morning, the operatives of the Royal Mill walked out. Later that day two more mills shut down; 1,961 people were now striking. By Jan. 24, every mill in the Valley, including Lippitt Mill, had closed because of the strike. More than 2,874 operatives were now on the street.

March Meeting 2005
Dr. Thomas SEPE, President of CCRI, graciously stepped in as speaker to replace Julie White who had another commitment. Dr. Sepe lives on campus in the house that was once part of the KNIGHT Estate. Although the house has been well maintained, the outbuildings have suffered from years of neglect. A commission has been established to research the historical significance of the property and to obtain funding to restore the buildings.
The following, taken from the hand-out given to those who attended the meeting, briefly explains who the Knights were and how they impacted Rhode Island economy:

"The Knights, one of Rhode Island's most prominent families during the 19th century, made their fortune in the textile industry. Their most well-known contribution was the Fruit of the Loom brand.
The Knight family entered the textile industry in `848 when they brought nearby Pontiac Mills. In 1873, another prominent Rhode Island family, the Sprague's, met with financial ruin. Robert and Benjamin Brayton KNIGHT acquired the SPRAGUE's mills as well as this "mansion estate" in 1875. According to the Warwick City Historian, the brothers converted the property into a model "gentleman's farm". The Knights operated this working farm until they deeded it and the surrounding acreage to the state for the birth of a community college in the 1960's." On the twenty of so acres that comprise the estate, there is a cider mill, a two-story building constructed of stone and mortar, that housed horse-powered apple presses; a greenhouse with an attached potting shed and central heat; a water tower, which sits on its original stone foundation, on about 200 square feet of land (it was built to provide gravity-fed water from artesian wells); a two-story carriage house and barn that original carriages from the KNIGHT family; a corn crib that was used to store corn to feed the prized Ayrshire cattle and Morgan horses; box stalls and a tack room that housed the Knight's prized horses; and a hen house believed to have been built as a barn for pigs. The house was built in 1835 by A.W. Sprague. When the Knights acquired the property Robert L. KNIGHT, one of the principals in the B.B. & Knight Company was the first occupant (1812 to 1912) and his sons, Webster Knight, occupied the residence from 1854 to 1933.
The estate is secluded from the campus by the road that leads to the main building. President SEPE is 100% behind the restoration and looks forward to the day when the public can be invited to share in the property's unique history and the beautiful surroundings reminiscent of a working farm, part of a gentleman's estate in the 19th century.

Born to Webster and Sarah Lippit Knight on Oct 18, 1885, Adelaide would grow up to bear a striking resemblance to Elenor Roosevelt. Similarities in her prominent teeth, hair pulled back into a bun at the nape of her neck, and a fondness for large concealing hats.

Warwick Rhode Island
Digital History Project
When I began writing about the Knight estate, a number of readers called to share their memories and most identified the Knight Estate on East Avenue with Adelaide Knight, only daughter of Webster Knight, one of the most influential early twentieth century businessmen and politicians. Some of the ladies from Warwick remember visiting the main house and recall that Adelaide, or her nephew, Royal Knight, would conduct them to the greenhouse. Here, George H. Phillips, the head gardener for many years, would obligingly answer their questions and then, with a flair, would cut roses and present one to each lady. While Adelaide Knight was basically a shy person, nearly everyone in the Natick Pontiac section knew her by sight and recalled her generosity and her philanthropy. Following the death of her father, Webster Knight, in 1933, Adelaide became the dominant figure at the East Avenue farm. During the 1930s and 1940s, the estate was known as the "Natick Farm" or "Miss Adelaide's Farm." While inheriting her father's interest in agriculture and philanthropy, Adelaide Knight developed a personality and life style far different from that of the flamboyant Webster Knight. She was a Christian Scientist, never married, and preferred to live alone in the main house on the estate. Unlike her father, she did not actively engage in politics and shunned the publicity that usually accompanied her gifts to the community. Ed Phillips, well known Warwick realtor, his father, George H. and his grandfather, Alvin T. Phillips, all worked for Miss Knight and were well aware of both her generosity and her idiosyncrasies. Ed noted that Adelaide was especially liberal with gifts to her workers at Christmas time. He recalls that, as a teen ager, he would always receive "something extra special" such as a much sought after baseball glove or a nice sweater from his employer. Phillips emphasized that working on the Knight Estate was "a good job to have during the Depression." While the pay was not high by the standards of the day, there were fringe benefits such as fresh fruit and vegetables from the Knight garden and extra pay for special tasks. The Phillips also lived in a house on Blade Street in Natick, not far from the Knight Farm. Stories about Miss Knight also emphasize that while generous, she was also frugal. Her house was heated by a coal stove and furnace. Miss Knight would most often buy the large size coal, which was less expensive, and have the "boys" on the farm use hammers to break the coal into small pieces. Not only did she save on the price of coal, she also kept the young workers from having too much "idle time" on their hands. Adelaide Knight was familiar with all aspects of farming and was as much at home in Lew Dawley's blacksmith shop or watching her expert masons build and maintain the stone walls on the estate as she was in presiding over a formal afternoon tea party. When not supervising, Adelaide would often don her work clothes and venture into the flower garden to weed and pick spent flowers from her plants. Until her death in 1948, she was closely associated with the various cattle and horse shows in New England. One of the most interesting areas on the estate was the well-maintained race track. Ed Phillips recalls how picturesque it was to see the horses go up East Avenue to the track across the street and how he would help wipe down and walk the horses under the direction of Milton Mason, who was in charge of the prize animals.
