[1748] On the 26th of 6th mo., 1742, the Preparative Meeting “agreed to wall ye graveyard with stone and Joseph Gilbert, Evan Thomas, Jonathan Knight, and Daniel Knight, were appointed to provide materials, employ workman, and see ye work  done.” From some further accounts it would seem as if this wall was built until 1748, and that the northwest end was left open so as to extend the yard in that direction. Friends at this time offered the privilege of buring to all who in any way assisted in the matter, and to their children; and several took advantage of this proposition.

His fine sense of the proprieties of life,combined with his polished manners and a social liberality, made him generally esteemed, respected and beloved. He was often called "Gentleman Jonathan" to distinguish him from another of the same name. He took a lively interest in the support of schools and in other matters of benefit to the meeting or the township.

OBITUARY: William Allen Knight III, M.D. was born in St. Louis, MO on Dec. 15, 1946 and died Mar. 16, 2009 at the age of 62. He graduated from St. Louis Country Day School 1964 and subsequently attended Union College in New York, receiving a B.S. in Psychology in 1968. He then received his M.D. from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1973 and completed a 3-year Internal Medicine residency with St. Louis University Hospitals in 1975. He dedicated his medical career to understanding the causes of and caring for those afflicted with breast cancer, starting with medical oncology fellowship training at, respectively, M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in Houston, TX and the University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSC) in San Antonio, TX. During his years on faculty in the Oncology Division at UTHSC in San Antonio, he became a world-renowned breast cancer scholar and educator, conducting and publishing landmark research on, for example, the estrogen receptor as an independent prognostic factor for early recurrence of breast cancer. Among many significant professional accomplishments, he was a member of the 1979 US-USSR Delegation in Moscow, an emeritus member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and holds a patent for oncology treatment methods. In 1989, Good Housekeeping Magazine honored him as one of the best breast cancer physicians in the United States. After 11 years at UTHSC, he returned to St. Louis University in 1986 as the Director of the Division of Medical Oncology and Professor of Medicine. After 4 years, he joined his father, Dr. William Knight Jr., in private practice in St. Louis. He returned again to UTHSCA in San Antonio in 2000, where he practiced until his retirement in 2005. Throughout his life, he loved music and was skilled in playing piano and guitar. His family considered him an expert chef; his prowess on the grill was unmatched. He loved spending time with his family, especially at "the Coast," where in the past few years he honed his amateur photography skills. He will be missed by his wife, Gerlyn Friesenhahn, M.D.; his children - William A. Knight IV, M.D., CPT Ryan M. Knight, M.D., Andrew P. Knight, Andrea Megan Knight, Nathan R. Reisdorph, and Jeremy C. Reisdorph; his mother, Ann P. Knight; his brother and sister Larry Knight and Mary Anne Knight; and, his grandchildren - Elizabeth Knight, Ava Knight, Casey Knight, Reina Knight, William A. Knight V, Milo Knight, Chance Reisdorph, Rylee Reisdorph, and Tyler Reisdorph. A visitation and memorial service will be held 7:00 PM, Fri., Mar. 20, 2009 at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home and funeral service at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Selma, TX at 10:00 am, Sat., Mar. 21, 2009. Dr. William A. Knight III ’68, of St. Louis, world-renowned breast cancer scholar and educator, March 16, 2009. He was 62.
Knight earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Union and received his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1973 and completed a three-year internal medicine residency with St. Louis University Hospitals in 1975. He dedicated his medical career to understanding the causes of and caring for those afflicted with breast cancer, starting with medical oncology fellowship training at, respectively, M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in Houston and, later, the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
