Bill....
I really enjoy your e-mails and find it fascinating to match up your memories of Dad's later life with mine of his earlier. You asked if he graduated from MIT.  I never heard this and am sure it's not true.  I know he went to a school called Boston Radio and got his radio knowledge there.  On my birth certificate (1934) his employment is listed as " Radio Supervisor, B&M Airways". After that he held a series of non-technical jobs. The ones I can remember were with United Fruit (he had great stories of his trip to South America with them), Lever Brothers, Sales Manager for a tv distributor in Boston, a wire recorder salesman, and a job at Raytheon in Quality Assurance ( I think ).  I'm sure there were many others since long-term jobs were not his long suit.  Oh yes, he worked for some time as an engineer jobber -  short term assignments with high pay.  I can now add nudist beach manager!! As you probably know his family was pretty well off at the time Dad was getting his education.  His brother Dick went to Andover Academy and then to Yale, while his sister Dorothy went to Boston Conservatory of Music or some other noted music school.  I don't know about Mary's education.  Dad graduated from Tilton Academy in North Hero, Vermont and I'm sure he could have gone to college.  I can only imagine that his rebellious nature was involved in a decision to go to radio school.  My mother had a picture of him on the football team at Tilton-- I hope my sister still has it- I'll get her to look.  By the way, I've asked her to look for pictures so I can send you copies.  She is slow unpacking but I'll keep after her. As for the genealogy --- I was born on 4/21/34 and Judy on 3/15/37.  Judy never married, but I have two children by my first wife, Kimberly born 4/30/60 and Daniel born 3/19/63.  Let me know if you want grandkids birth dates and with a little digging I can come up with them. Have to leave you now since Nell and I take our puppy to obedience class on Sat. mornings.
More later,    Dick

dear william:-  (doug v brown calling from MA-usa )

Thanks for your prompt reply....... It may seem that the majority of Vital and Historical Records Centers ,including the town libraries, don't give a damn about ones ancestors ,but most of them are not really staffed to do even a minor search-you have to ask them to point you to "the Room" and then dig in.......
You noted that you have the US census-MA and I suggested the next step would be a search of the Melrose City Directories Anyhow, I've been there, and done that and I have good news that the George/Cora et als Life story and last known address are recorded there, which I have transcribed and printed below----My next step is to get Cora Ellen's death cert at the town hall and then George A.C.'s death cert. At this point it looks as if your Aunt Dorothy never married but lived
at home with Geo/Cora and took care of them to the end, which was about 1951-1952 at 22 Howard St for George A.C. Knight and about 1961-1962 at the MacKenzie Nursing Home at 24 VINE St for Cora Ellen. As I get the data I will EMail it to you it will include cemetery, Church, and other VR's  data- It seems that at 22 Howard St ,a Walter and Ida M Knight appeared at the time of your grandpa's death-- maybe a relative I would like to hear of some of your memories.....time
permitting.......Of course there is possibility of getting a copy of GAC's will at the Probate Office in Cambridge Also any or all Deeds with your Grandparents signatures ................
P.S. -Geo and 3 children, Dot/Rich/William were ,I believe, all assoc with the John Hancock Insurance Co. in Boston,MA.......maybe a source of further data........hmmmmmm
Keep smiling.........

My husband was born and raised in Portland, Cumberland, Maine. We currently do not live there, but we are somewhat familiar with the geography of the area.

Regarding Cora Ellen, Pine Point, Cumberland, ME is actually considered to be a part of the town of Scarborough. I then checked the 1880 census for Cumberland County, Maine on Ancestry.com for a 5 year old named Cora with no last name entered. I found a Cora Richard living in the household of John W. Webster in Scarborough, Cumberland, ME.

Here is the entire household listing:
Last, First, Race, Sex, Age, Birthplace, Occupation, Father's Birthplace, Mother's Birthplace

Webster, John W., W, M, 34, NH, keeping of town farm, NH, NH
Webster, Catherine B., W, F, 34, ME , keeping house, ME, ME
Skillings, Staloria, W, F, 70, ME, Servant, ME, ME
Richards, Daniel, W, M, 67, ME, Teamster, ME, ME
Burnham, Drusillia, W, F, 65, ME, Servant, ME, ME
Snow, Samuel, W, M, 56, ME, Fisherman, ME, ME
Richard, Cora, W, F, 5, ME, At School, ME, ME

I know that this raised a lot of other questions, but hopefully it helps get you pointed in the right direction.

Certainly, Orris, having served in the Union Army would name one of his sons, Geo Armstrong Custer KNIGHT. His birth occured in 1876 when Gen. Custer died at Little Big Horn battle.

The following bits about your ancestor, Orris P. KNIGHT from the History of the town of North Hero, VT by Allen Stratton.

Rural Free Delivery came to North Hero, VT on 1 Feb 1902. The first carrier was Orris P. KNIGHT 2-1-1902---2-28-1903. p. 167.

Orris' wife Mary was the daughter of Dr. Elijah HAYNES (a remarkable man in many ways) and his second wife, Polly Ann DARROW. more history of HAYNES on the same page. p. 195.

Oct. 19, 1883--Guy K. KNIGHT, returned home from Jamestown,Stutsman, North Dakota last week, where he has been to see his son Henry. He reports all the North Island boys in that section in a prosperous condition. Orris P. KNIGHT has leased his farm to Henry PARKER and in the spring Orris will skip out to Dakota to see if he can't strike ile (sic) like his predecessors. p. 207

Feb 9, 1899-- Mrs. Orris P. KNIGHT has gone on a visit to her old home in Stockholm, NY. p. 214

Oct 3 1901-- Oscar KNIGHT and family who have been passing a few weeks in town , left for their home in Chicago, Sep 26. (brother of George ??)

May 28, 1903-- Orris P. KNIGHT, jailkeeper, has two boarders at the Jail in the Court House, the result of indulging too freely of Plattsburgh juices. p. 216.

Early settler John KNIGHT ran a ferry service in North Hero, VT and other family history p. 191-193.

Looking After Cooligole
County Clerk O. P. Knight, of Grand Isle county drove across the ice yesterday and called upon Sheriff Cunningham in relation to  Frank Cooligole, who is being held on a charge of murder. Mr. Knight is also a deputy sheriff, and was formerly a sheriff of the county. He understood that application has already been made to Governor Odell for Cooligole's extradition, but no such notice has been received by the local officials.
There is said to be considerable rivalry among the different deputies and constables of Grand Isle county as to who shall have charge of the prisoner when he is transferred. It is over fifteen years since Grand Isle has had a murder case, and the present one has all the charms of novelty for the islanders. In fact, neither of the two cases within the memory of the present generation can be laid to natives of the island county. The recent case only happened by accident to come within the jurisdiction of the county, while its predecessor was caused by the action of a German farm hand.
Mr. Knight is keeper of the county jail, and will have the custody of Cooligole after his extradition, which may be expected to happen at any time.

O.P. Knight elected Justice of the Peace, for the County of Grand Isle,Vermont to begin term of two years December 1, 1912

Respectfully returned to the Commissoiner of Pensions

MILITARY: Received part of a letter from Bob Sibley, written by his great grandfather in 1862. Here is the trascription of that letter.
May the 30 1862
Wilins Port Md.
Mr. Frank Kinney
I suppose you would like to here form me. Olde Phelps is all rite. I have lost my horse and everything but my saber and my pistol and one blanket. I was from Saturday night till Thursday night getting in. only three of our bois are missing now, Henry Shiott, Corporal Night, A Brigham. We are in hopes that they will come in but Shiott he was shot while fording cedar creek.
I am feeling so well that I can't write everything that I want to. It was a terrible stampede of Calvary Brigade wagons. The bois keep coming in all the time. Co A and Co B cut up very bad. We heard this morning that the Captain of Co. B. wit 12 or 15 men are in the the mountain. Yet I will write more next time. Write as soon as you get this, send more stamps. Corporal Night I think will come in he was from North Island. I will write more next time, I am well and tough as a knot.
                    F.B. Kinny
                    Williams Port Md.
                    Direct to Washington,D.C.

I believe that the letter is refering to Orris Pierre Knight b:2 Mar 1841, he served in the Vermont First Calvary Regiment Troop B. as a Corporal. He enlisted 18 Sep 1861 was mustered in 19 Nov 1861 and was mustered out on 7 Oct 1862. Family history says he was captured and paroled so this would match with him going missing and with the early mustered out date. Ancestry Plus Full Context of American Civil War Soldiers has Orris as a POW on 8 May 1862 and Paroled on 21 Sep 1862 and received a disability discharcge 7 Oct 1862

Statement of Mrs. Polly Ann Haynes on the application of Orris Pierre Knight
27 September 1886 Grand Isle County, Vermont

That I have been well and personally acquainted with O.P. Knight for 45 years and that I have lived within ¾ of a mile of Mr. O.P Knight ever since he was a child. I am the widow of the late Dr. Elijah Haynes never knew of him being sick until after he enlisted and went into the army and was confined in Libby Prison and when he was brought from there he looked more like a ghost than the strong healthy man he was when he enlisted. Dr. Haynes was called to visit him, he found him in a shattered condition, both body & mind being in a fearful state a perfect wreck of the once strong man he was at the time of enlistment, other physicians were called, after he was able to be around he was confined to crutches for awhile and his right limb has always troubled since, and at times badly he has been obliged to resort  to crutches  at different times since, I have seen him well to all appearances physically, but the broken constitution, the shattered nerves are wounds not on the surface they hurt deep within concealed from mortal eyes, his right limb he has always…..

Affidavit of  Warner Gibbs

I first became aquainted with Orris P. Knight in the fall of 1861, we was a member of the same squadron at that time in the 1st Vermont Cavalry with myself, we, both of us were taken prisoner in an engagement with the enemy at Middleton,Va. May 24, 1862 and were marched to Lynchburg, Va. Where a number of months were spent in the rebel prison there. Orris P. Knight fell sick and went into a tent, on the fair grounds where we were confined, used as a hospital. In July I think it was, I left the prison at Lynchburg for Bull Island near Richmond, Va., with those able to be moved, Knight was left behind at Lynchburg in the tent hospital. He was a very sick again an those of us who went away thought him dead. He did not overtake us while in Virginia, and when I reached Annapolis late in September of 1862 I wrote to a newspaper in Vermont and reported Knight as dead. Afterward I saw Knight in October or November, 1862, at Washington D.C.  Who had come in  afterward, his health was very poor he was regarded as completely used up, was discharged at Washington D.C., did not return to regiment again. When I last saw him he was on crutches at Washington.

I was 1st Sergeant in Company B 1st Vermont Cavalry

Statement of Edward Kellogg on the application of Orris Pierre Knight for Invalid Pension for service during the Civil War....
27 September 1886 Franklin County, Vermont

That I have been intimitly acquainted with said Orris P. Knight for upwards of thirty years. Just after the time of his enlistment in the U.S. Service he was a healthy potent man...I never knew Orris to be sickly until after he enlisted. In October 1862 I went to Washington, D.C. Having heard of his return from the Rebel Prison found him at Mount Pleasant Hospital Washington D.C. I found him in a very bad condition. His right leg was very lame had to walk on crutches and he was troubled with chronic diarrhea. He was soon discharged and came home with me and he staid at my house about one week before he...to his home on North Hero, Vt. and that Dr. John B....attended him while he was at my house. After he got rested I took him in a small boat across the lake to his home. I had a man by the name of Jed Bessett help me get him in and out of the boat and that he has been troubled with that same leg ever since and that I have seen him as often as once or twice a year ever since and I think he is incapacitated for....manual labor at least one half that he cannot perform more than one half the...of an able bodied man.

Statement of Charles Hyde on the application of Orris Pierre Knight for Invalid Pension for service during the Civil War....
31 August 1886 Grand Isle County, Vermont

I never knew him to be attended by any physicians before he went into the army, nor was he sick or lame before that time to my best knowledge. I live within one and a half miles from him and have for over thirty years. He was before he went into the army a very strong healthy man. I saw him when he came out of the army direct from rebel prison a physical wreck. I know he was attended by physicians for lameness and knew him to be sick in bed at different times with lameness or rheumatism in right leg. I cannot give dates of the attack but I think one of his worse days was in 1880 or so was sick for nearly three months not in bed all the time but confined to the house.

I have often heard him complain of his lameness, he did not work for me.

Some days he is able to do as much as most any man and at other times he is wholly unable to work at all, should say he is able to work one half the times on the average.

Statement of Jed Bessette on the application of Orris Pierre Knight for Invalid Pension for service during the Civil War....
23 September 1886 Franklin County, Vermont

That I was well acquainted with the said Orris P. Knight and knew him well having lived very near to him for years before he enlisted and knew him to be there a tough, rugged man before he enlisted. I never knew of him having anything the matter with him before that time.

That when he was discharged and returned home in Oct.,1862 I rowed him across the lake fro St. Albans to North Hero. He was sick and very lame in the right leg and walked on crutches. We had to lift him in and out of the boat. He was very poor and emaciated and he had no hair on his head. And that I have seen him practically every year since-say eight or ten times a year since and that he has been lame and complained of trouble in his right leg. That in my opinion he is not capable of manual labor but does one half what is….one half the labor of an able bodied man.

MILITARY: STATE OF VERMONT ---- About a probate court held in District of Grand Isle, Vermont at the Probate Office in North Hero in said district on the 8th day of October A.D. 1832.

Present the Hon. Joel Allen, Judge on this 8th day of October A.D. 1832.

Personally appeared in open court before the Hon. The  Probate Court for the District of Grand Isle now sitting John Knight a resident of North Hero in the County of Grand Isle and State of Vermont aged seventy eight years the 10th  day of February 1832. Who, being first duly sworn according to law both on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th, 1832.

That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated. That he entered the service of the United States at Bennington in Vermont in the winter of 1776 at the request of General Philip Schuyler of Albany, the purpose of which expedition was to disarm Sir John Johnston.

We went in sleighs about in six in a sleigh. We went from Bennington to Albany at which place General Schuyler joined in  and we proceeded to Schenectady from there on up the Mohawk River about twenty miles to a place I do not recollect and stayed all night in a dutch barn from there to Johnstown, A capitulation was made and Sir John Johnson paraded his men and grounded their arms and we took them up and brought them to Albany and turned them in the public store-soon after returned home to Bennington the whole length of this service was three or four weeks had no written discharge have no documenting evidence and know of no person living whose testimony he can procure who can testify to this term of service. His next service was in the summer of 1776 after Arnold's defeat on Lake Champlain, there was an alarm at Bennington in which I turned out under command of Capt. Robinson we started for Ticonderoga but did not proceed further than Mount Independence before we heard that the British Fleet had returned to Canada and our service was about 10 days, have not discharge or documents to prove this service and know of no person living whose testimony can be provided who can testify to this service. His next service was in the spring of  1777 he volunteered under the command of Lieutenant Gideon Spencer of Bennington went to Saratoga barracks when Col. Van ? commanded from there to Joseph's Patent then back to Saratoga barracks and returned home. The object of this expedition was to hunt up and rout the refugees and Torries who were secreted in that section of the country awaiting the arrival of Burgoyne. This term of service was about three  or four weeks have no written discharge no documentary evidence and know of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his service.

His next service was in the ?..part of the summer of 1777-he volunteered under the command of Capt. Robinson and went to Manchester in Vermont in the Militia service. Our service at this place was scouting for Tories who were supplying the British Army then at Ticonderoga under General Burgoyne with cattle. This service was about two or three weeks that he enlisted in the ranging service in Capt. Ebenezer Allen's Company of the State Troops of Vermont or (New Hampshire grants) line 1st Lieutenant Isaai Clark  and  2nd Lieutenant our Pier in Col. Samuel Herrick's regiment of rangery about the first of July 1777 our service was principally scouting in small parties and ranging the woods for Indians and Tories. I was in the battle of Bennington through the whole of the action that he was one of the party Capt. Allen who attacked a British breastwork with two pieces of cannon that then killed three gunnery at one fire that they retreated and mounted the breastwork and turned their own….upon them and killed Col. Baum and Fester heading the Tories that after this battle our service was as before scouting and ranging the woods until about the 1st of February following at which time there was no service of that kind  wanted and we returned home to Bennington having served constantly from the first of July 1777 to the 1st of February 1778 he understood that the enlistment was for one year but did not serve the term out there being no service for him. That he had no written discharge no documentary evidence and know of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to this term of service except that of Enos Wood herewith transmitted. That after he left the ranging service he went to building stone houses at Bennington under commissary under commissioner Joseph Farnsworth and continued  in that service two or three months and was by said Farnsworth in continental money. That from that time under the year 1781, he was always ready and held himself as minute man for any call of his country as he was a carpenter and a cooper had no other business but the employment of the Army  either building barracks Stone houses and making barracks for the community except that he was occasionally employed in keeping  garrisons the term of which service he does not recollect. That he was in numerous Scouts not before mentioned which it is impossible for him to tell the term he served. I was born in the town of Norwich now Lisbon in the State of Connecticut on the 10th day of February 1754 I lived in the town of Middletown in Vermont and in 1784 I removed to North Hero in Vermont where I have lived ever since. I lived in the Town of Bennington in the state of Vermont when first called into the service of the United States. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension in an annuity except the precent and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any agency of any state.

My grandmother, Marion Noris Knight Craig, started researching the knight family in the 30's and my father picked up after her death as I did after his death. Although born near Montreal, Canada we moved to NJ and then to North Hero, VT where my father tried for many years to connect our Knight line to the North hero Knight Line. Although I'm sure there is a connection, mine dead-ends in Marlboro, VT with a Royal Knight.

A couple of interesting notes concerning your request:
There is an Island off the east side of North Hero ( by the way, North Hero is one of two Islands in the middle of Lake Champlain named for the two Hero's of the revolution Ethan and Ebenezer Allen. Anyway, The Island is Knight's Island named by/for John Knight (1754) and off the north end of that island is Damy's Island named for the 2nd female child born in North Hero, Diedamia Knight. There are still several Knights in North Hero as well as Hazen's

I hope that you can make sense of and use the above information. If I can be of further assistance, Please don't hesitate to e-mail me directly

The value of land a year after the organization of the town may be inferred from the following transaction at the town meeting held March 16, 1790:

"Voted to give John Knight and Nathan Hazen two dollars for 1/2 acre of land for a burying-ground." This purchase constituted the first cemetery in town.

March 4, 1793, Nathan Hutchins, jr., John Martin, Elijah Knowlton, and Enos Wood were chosen to divide the town into school districts. The first school was taught in John Knight's barn by Lois Hazen. A frame building was erected for school purposes about 1803.

Alexander Gordon located directly opposite on Grand Isle, where he established the ferry known as Gordon's Ferry (called at some time Ladd's Ferry) and opened in 1790 an inn near by. The ferry from Grand Isle to North Hero was operated by Alexander Gordon and John Knight whose dwellings were on opposite sides of the crossing until the death of the former in 1802, after which Philo Berry succeeded Mr. Gordon, and Knight and Berry were the proprietors. Scows and small boats were the carrier, the town authorities fixing the charges, a single man paying six cents; horses and cattle were ferried for nine cents and sheep for three cents each.
Alexander Gordon had conveyed to John Knight of North Hero and Elijah Hyde of Middle Hero by sale or lease certain property rights, November 14, 1800, and about this time Philo Berry was a man of growing prominence. He was the youngest brother of Mrs. Dimmis (Berry) Hatch, born April 4, 1774, and was therefore not far from twenty-eight at the time of Alexander Gordon's death, when he and Mrs. Polly Gordon were appointed administrators of her husband's estate.

BIOGRAPHY: !History of Norwich Connecticut, page 298, David Knight,Jr. was paid a bounty in 1720 for catching and killing 28 rattlesnakes in Norwich.

Born, 12 DEC 1693, in Norwich, CT (Ref: Barbour Index, Utah Pioneers Biographies). Died, 19 DEC 1769, in Sprague, CT. Christened, 26 JUL 1718, in Canterbury,CT. Burial: DEC 1769 (Sprague Cemetery). Occupation: Carpenter. The will of David Knight, of Norwich, dated Feb. 25, 1762, probated Jan. 21, 1770, mentions wife Abigail; Joshua and Jerusha, children of deceased son Jonathan, late of Norwich; sons David, Phineas and John; daughters Abigail and Jerusha. The omission of the name of Deborah creates a question as to whether she was his daughter as she was living at that time. The inventory of his estate was dated Jan. 24, 1770, the amount being 231 pounds 8 shillings 10 pence and includes "The farm of Land where ye Deceased Mr. David Knight Last Dwelt Lying in Norwich in Hanover Society containing about forty five acres with ye Buildings thereon & appurtenences thereunto Belonging" estimated at 178 pounds 15 shillings. The covers to the inventory are parts of the New London Gazette dated Oct. 6, 1769.

Hanover was incorporated at the May session of the General Assembly in 1761 and was made up of the northerly part of Newent (now Lisbon), the southwest corner of Canterbury and the Southeast corner of Windham. It was a little more than a year before the death of David Knight, when he was seventy-five years old, that an agreement was made with the Rev. Andrew Lee to become the pastor of the new church at Hanover, which was known as the eighth Church of Christ in Norwich. A meeting was held at the house of Capt. Samuel Bishop on Oct. 12, 1768, and the following was adopted:

We agree to take the Scriptures for the perfect Rule of our Lives & also for our Rule as to the affairs of God's house. And for the better understanding of God's mind in his word concerning Church discipline we agree to practice according to the Platform drawn up by the Synod at Cambridge in the year 1648, which we look upon to be the Congregational way that we choose to practice; concluding that all organized Church acts proceed after the manner of a mixt Administration, so that no Church Act can be
consummated & compleated, without the Consent of the Elder & Brotherhood. Of the nine men, in addition to the Pastor Elect, who signed this agreement, David Knight was the first, Jonathan Knight the second, and David Knight, Jr., was the last. An ecclesiastical council had been held as early as May 13, 1766, when the church had been organized, and of the nine men who were charter members David Knight was the first mentioned, David, Jr., was the last and Jonathan was included; of the six women members, Abigail Knight was one. The list of church members at the settlement of the pastor as shown in the records has David Knight, the first male, died aged 76, David Knight, Jr., the last male of the nine, died aged 83, Abigail Knight, the first named female, died aged 90.

Distribution of Estate of David Knight, late of Norwich, made on May 4, 5, & 8, 1770 has the item:- "We have set out to Deborah Butt ye third Daughter of ye sd Deceased in ye Moveable Estate of ye sd Deceased, one Black Jacoat, one pair Stilberds, one pair of Shoes & Sundry other Articles of ye Moveable Estate of sd Deceased all at Inventory price amounting in ye whole to ye Sum of 3 pounds 9 shillings 1 pence."

Jul 20, 1718, "David, Jonathan, Sarah, Mary, and Hannah Knite, the children of David Knite of Norwich entered into the Covenant."

The following is taken from the Knight web site

David's Will reads:

" I, give unto my well Beloved wife Sarah the use and Improvement of all my Moveable Estate During her Natural Life, In Lieu of her Right of Dower." " As to my Sons (viz) David, Jonathan, Benjamin, and Joseph deceased, what I have formaly Given to Each of them in Land and Divers other ways I Judge to be the full of their Several Portions of my Estate: and therefore I Give the Nothing by this my Last Will and Testament, nor to the Children of son Joseph, Deceased."

" As to my moveable Estate; I Give it to my Daughters (viz) Sarah the wife of Elisha Lilly, Mary the Wife of Thomas Walbridge, Hannah the wife of Aaron Read and Louranna ye wife of Ebenezer Bettes and the Children of my Daughter Rachell Hendy, deed, to be Equally Divided to and among them, that is to Say, to all the Children of my Daughter Rachell, Deceased, as to one of the above Named Daughters, one fifth Part, to be equally Divided to and among as above Expressed after my wifes decease."
Exor: Jonathan Knight
Proved: 10 December 1744

His son Jonathan was made the executor and the will was signed with his mark, a straight line crossed be a curved line. The will was proved December 10 1744. The inventory dated three days later amounted to 607 pounds 11 shillings and 7 pence. No real Estate was listed and it seems certain that he had divided his real estate among his children before he made his will. The inventory of his estate includes three bonds of 100 pounds each and one bond of 130 pounds, old tenor, a bible valued at 2 puonds 5 shillings and a history Book valued at 1 shilling. In a division of the estate in February following, Sarah Knight signs with her mark, but Elisha Lillie, Thomas Walbridge, Ebenezer Bettes and Aron Read with their autographs. In the final accounting mention is made of a journey to Woodstock to look after the estate, and the widow, in this division, received 532 pounds and 9 pence.

In 1692 David was at Canterbury. He lived at a place known as " Ye crotch of the rivers" (Lisbon).

Some of David's neighbors were: Eleazer Jewett, Daniel Longbottom, Josiah Read, Henry Wallbridge. Another neighbor was Samuel Rood and Samuel Rood Jr.

"YE CROTCH OF YE RIVERS"
Is is recorded that Daniel Longbottom was an inhabitant of Newent in "Ye Crotch of ye Rivers", the area between the Shetauket, Little, and Quinneboug Rivers, which became a society of Norwich in 1690. In 1692 he married Elizabeth Lamb, daughter of John and Ann Lamb of Groton. Their oldest child, the second Daniel, was born there on March 19, 1694, the same year of the birth of the second Christopher Huntington.
In 1694 and 95 Captain James Fitch, Jr. sold a grant of 1800 acres "lying between the crotch of the rivers Shetucket and Quinebaug" to Joseph Safford, Richard Smith, Meshach Farley, Mathew Perkins and Samuel Bishop, all from Ipswich, Massachusetts. In 1695 Joseph and Jacob Perkins, also of Ipswich, purchased a tract from the former purchasers. Settlement commenced immediately. In 1718 the following sixteen persons were listed as inhabitants of Newent: Samuel Bishop, Samuel Coy, Eleaser Jewett, David Knight, Daniel Longbottom, Samuel Lothrop, Jabez Perkins, Joseph Perkins, Josiah Read, Josiah Read Jr., Joseph Read, John Read, William Read, Samuel Rood, Samuel Rood Jr., and Henry Wallbridge. As would be expected, here again are names of men whose descendents married Bottom men and women. In his Journal 1813 Nathan H. Bottom of Shaftsbury, Vermont wrote that his great grandfather's (the first Daniel) "relations were pretty numerous in Norwich, and there were so many of the name in a certain part of town that it was called Bottomtown".

There was no Lydia in the 1707 agreement between the siblings to settle the estate. So, she must have died by then, and probably without heir, or the heir would have had a say, or mention, in the estate as well.

That doesn't help you confirm that Lydia, dau of William, was wife of Thomas Hyde. You'll have to look elsewhere for that. I'm not sure what evidence leads to that conclusion. Jacobus didn't say, but did show that that Lydia was the wife of Thomas Hyde.

Estate Settlement of Stephen Backus:

On 28 May, 1707, Timothy Backus of Canterbury, David Knight of
Norwich, Robert Green and William Baker, both of Canterbury,
in behalf of their wives, Sarah, Ruth and Rebeckah, daughters
of Stephen Backus of Norwich, dec'd, and Elizabeth Backus, daughter
of said Stephen, and Sarah Backus, the widow, agree that Timothy
is to have the 200 acres in Canterbury, he to pay debts and
remaining legacies (to Widow, Timothy and Elizabeth); Stephen
the eldest son who administered with his mother "deceased on the
first day Instant."

Richard KNIGHT-L71S-SVK was born on 14 Jan 1602/1603 in Romsey, Wiltshire, Hants, England. He was christened on 14 Jan 1603 in St. Mary & Ethelfri, Romsey, Hampshire, England. He died on 4 Aug 1683 in Rhode Island. Richard married Sarah ROGERS-LC38-HSM on 16 Jan 1648 in Newport, Newport, Rhode Island.

BIOGRAPHY: Richard Knight C:1603/1605-1680- The earliest record found of this person is on 4 Aug 1640 when he agreed with the town of Hampton to keep a mill at the landing and was granted 100 acres, "History of Hampton,N.H.",Pope. An assumption has been made that Richard came from Norfolk,England because of this record as most Hampton settlers came from Norfolk County,England. However, in the book McCormick-Hamilton-Day Ancestral Lines, Compiled for Elizabeth Day McCormick & Robert Hall McCormick III, privately printed, 1957 it suggest Richard came from Kent County, England.

14 Sep 1640, Richard contracted to build the meeting house at Hampton.

29 Jan 1640/1641, He was to make a gate for the pound.

Dec 1641, He was a defendant in a suit brought by Stephen Kent.

1644, He was suspected of theft and was then "of~Salisbury,Ma."

1645, A warrent was issued for the arrest of Richard Knight of Hampton.

The Early Knights of Rhode Island
By G. Andrews Moriarty, A.M., LL.B., F.S.A., of Bristol, R.I.

The early history of the Knight Family, which became prominent in Providence in the last century, is somewhat obscure, and the account given in Austin's "Dictionary" is not entirely satifactory. Therefore it is the purpose of the contributor of this article to present a brief history of the early generations of the family.
The founder of the family in New England was Richard Knight, who was at Newport as early as December 1646. Austin knew nothing earlier than this about him; but there are references to him in the Essex Quarterly Court files at Salem, Mass., that show that prior to his arrival in Rhode Island he had lived at Hampton, N.H., where he had a mill.

1. Richard (1) Knight, of Hampton, N.H., and Newport, R.I., was living in 1680, but died before 27 Oct. of that year. He married first in England, ________; and secondly, about 1647, Sarah Rogers, daughter of James and Mary Rogers of Newport, R.I., who was living at East Greenwich 24 Feb. 1684/5, when she served on a jury of women with respect to the condition of a young women.
Richard Knight probably came to Hampton, N.H. from co. Norfolk, England, as most of the earliest inhabitants of Hampton came from that part of England.
On 4 Aug. 1640 and agreement was made between the town of Hampton and Richard Knight regarding his building and keeping a mill at the landing there, and 100 acres were granted to him. On 14 Sept. 1640 he contracted to build a meeting house. On 29 Jan. 1640/1 it was voted that instead of working on the Common Richard Knight was to make a gate for the pound. He was the defendant in a suit brought by Stephen Kent in December 1641. On 9 July 1645 a warrant for his arrest was issued to the constables of Boston, Mass., on account of certain thieving activities of his, and on 9 Sept. 1645 Joseph Armetage was ordered by the Court to hold all the goods in his hands of Richard Knight "late of Hampton, now of Rhode Island." (Essex Quarterly Court Files, vol. 1, p. 88 and History of Hampton.) In Rhode Island he was a house carpenter by trade, and the the items given above show that he practiced the same trade at Hampton. He probably fled to Rhode Island at some time between 9 July and 9 Sept. 1645, to escape punishment for his misdeeds. This experience seems to have had a salutary effect on him, for thenceforth his life in Rhode Island was, so far as is known, entirely decorous. In February 1646 [? 1645/6] Goodman Knight conveyed his house, mill, and 100 acres at Hampton to Christopher Lawson of Boston, Mass. In December 1646 he brought suit at Newport against William Jeffery (Acquidneck Quarterly Court Files, printed). On 16 Jan. 1647/8 land at Newport was conveyed to him by James Rogers, whose daughter Sarah he married about this time. On 8 Feb. 1648/9 he agreed with his wife Sarah not to sell the 40 acres of land bought of James Rogers and Robert Griffin, but entailed it upon her and his eldest son by her, who was to have it at the age of twenty years. If he should have no son, then the land was to go to their eldest daughter, at the age of sixteen years. Moreover, his son in Old England was to have no part in it. (Rhode Island Colonial  Deeds, edited by Chaplin, vol. 1, p. 6.) From 1648/9 he kept the prison in Newport. He was general sergeant in 1648, 1649, 1650, 1653, 1654, 1657, and 1658. His name occurs on the roll of freeman at Newport in 1655. He was sent to summon the Warwick sachem Pomham before the Court on 17 Mar. 1655/6. He sold land at Newport on 22 Dec. 1656 and 5 Dec. 1658. In the latter year he was "Water Bailey." On 19 Jan. 1663/4 he made, in partnership with Henry Hall, the great purchase of lands at Chippachog, in Westerly and Kingston, from the Indians, which was afterwards known as the Hall and Knight purchase. He appears to have rendered service to the Colony in Philip's War, for on 31 Oct. 1677 he was one of the grantees of the East Greenwich lands, for service in that war. Each grantee received 100 acres. On 11 Dec. 1679 he, together with his wife and his eldest son, John, sold land. He was alive as late as 1680, when he was taxed 7s., but by 27 Oct. 1680 he was dead, as on that date his widow petitioned for a confirmation of the lands in  East Greenwich that he had settled upon her, and this was allowed.

Jan. 19, 1664.   Coginaquant's deed to Richard Knight and Henry Halls, of about two square mile, which they named Westerly Manor. (L.E. 1, 2, 405.) It joined the Pettiquamscut purchase, and was bounded on the East side from a place called Quamatucumpic-Southward to a place called Chippachuack-thence Westerly to a place called Quowachauk-thence North to a place called Winatompic-and from thence a strait line to the first bounds. This purchase was afterwards confirmed by the Assembly, in 1708. Its bounds as finally settled, appear to have been Usquepaug river on the West-Pettiquamscut purchase on the East, and on the North, a tract of land which Lang, Boss, Wickam and others, purchased of the State's Committee, May 17, 1710

In October, 1708, (at Providence,) this committee made a Report, (see App.) which was received and confirmed as being mad according to the true intent of the Act of October 30, 1672.
The Assembly confirmed the Deed of Coginaquand to Knight and Halls, provided it should not interfere with the Pettaquamscut purchas, or former grants.

31 Oct 1667 - He was one of forty-eight who were granted 100 acres each in a plantation called East Greenwich. This name of the new town, together with the reference in the deed of Coganaquoant, arouses suspicion that Richard Knight, and perhaps others of the settlers, were familiar with the county of Kent,England, and possibly had come from that county.

DEATH: Ref. Homer T. Knight."Richard was probably buried in his back yard, perhaps with a wooden marker. This was the practice in Newport in those days. In the middle of the nineteeth centry many of these private cemeteries were moved to central locations in Newport, but since most of Richards's kin had moved elsewhere, the site of his burial had been lost."

MILITARY: He appears to have rendered military service to the colony in King Philip's War, for on October 31,1677, he was one of the grantees of the East Greenwich Lands, for service in that war. Each grantee received 100 acres.

Sarah ROGERS [Parents]-LC38-HSM was born in 1625 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts. She died in 1684/1685 in Rhode Island. Sarah married Richard KNIGHT-L71S-SVK on 16 Jan 1648 in Newport, Newport, Rhode Island.

BIOGRAPHY: "Phillips Bradford"
Dear Mr. Knight.

I have just found an alternative idea about who Sarah Rogers' parents were (at least her father).

The Mayflower passengers, Thomas Rogers, and his son Joseph Rogers, are discussed on the following "official" Mayflower web sites:
Thomas Rogers: See: http://www.mayflowerhistory.com/Passengers/ThomasRogers.php
Joseph Rogers: See: http://www.mayflowerhistory.com/Passengers/JosephRogers.php

Now, on the Joseph Rogers site. It says he married "Hannah, probably around 1632 (if she is the mother of all his children.)", where no surname is provided for Hannah, and there is a caveat about whether or not said Hanna is the mother of all his children. It also states that after Thomas Rogers died in 1621, Joseph was 18 years old and lived for 10 years in the household of Gov. William Bradford (my direct ancestor). There are many sources that will confirm that Gov. Bradford adopted many children whose parents died in the hardships of 1621.

A little further down on the page for Joseph Rogers, there is a link to his will. This will shows no mention of a daughter named Sarah.

However, here is the big clue: See the web page:
http://www.mayflowerhistory.com/PrimarySources/BradfordAllertonLetter1623.php
which is a letter by Gov. Bradford written in 1623 (when Joseph Rogers would have been 21 years old). Toward the end of this letter, there is a paragraph, which I have copied below:

Letter of William Bradford and Isaac Allerton
(Relating to events surrounding the arrivals of the ships Anne and Little James, 1623)

Beloved and kind friends.

(...)

"We found the surgeon in the pinnace to be so proud and quarrelsome a man, and to use his terms in that sort, as the Captain and others durst not go to sea with him; being over ready to raise factions and mutiny in the ship; so as we were constrained to dismiss him, and hire Mr. Rogers in his room, Mr. Pierce being willing to release him, to do us a favor. He is to have 35s per month, whereof he desires his wife may have 16s a month, which we pray you may be accordingly performed."

(...)

WILLIAM BRADFORD, Governor
ISAAC ALLERTON, Assistant
PLIMOTH
September 8  1623

This says that Mr. Rogers (which could only be Joseph Rogers) was being released from his master (Rogers was probably an indentured servant under Mr. Pierce), to replace the "proud and quarrelsome surgeon in the pinnace". It also says that both he (Joseph Rogers) AND HIS WIFE were to be paid. This clearly shows that Joseph Rogers was married and lived in Plymouth in 1623. Could he not be the father of Sarah Rogers, who was born in Plymouth in 1625?  Could "Hannah" be his second wife, and since he left his house to Hannah, could the children of his first wife have been left out of his will. This could also explain why Sarah would have married Richard Knight, a man that was 21 years older than she, when she was 23 years old, and moved away to Newport RI.  The Colony of Rhode Island had been founded upon some different principles than Plymouth, and her move to RI would have been taken as an abandonment of Plymouth.

What do you think of this idea?
