Vaderland

Built by John Brown & Company, Clydebank, Scotland, 1900. 11,899 gross tons; 580 (bp) feet long; 60 feet wide. Steam quadruple expansion engines, twin screw.  Service speed 15 knots.  1,162 passengers (342 first class, 194 second class, 626 third class). Two funnels and four masts.

Built for Red Star Line, British flag, in 1900 and named Vaderland. Antwerp-New York service. Chartered by International Navigation Company, British flag, in 1915 and renamed Southland. Troopship service. Torpedoed in the Aegean Sea on 9/2/1915, but salvaged and repaired. Torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine off the Irish coast on May 4, 1917.


Vaterland

Built by Blohm & Voss Shipbuilders, Hamburg, Germany, 1914. 54,282 gross tons; 950 (bp) feet long; 100 feet wide. Steam turbine engines, quadruple screw.  Service speed 23 knots.  3,909 passengers (752 first class, 535 second class, 2,622 third class).

Built for Hamburg-American Line, German flag, in 1914 and named Vaterland. Hamburg-New York service. Interned in NY start of WWI 8/1914. Largest liner in the world 1914-21. Seized by U.S. authorities, in 1917 and renamed USS Leviathan. Troopship service. Laid up 1919-21. Restored as passenger ship 1922-23. Chartered by United States Lines, in 1923 and renamed Leviathan. New York-Southampton service. Laid up 1932-34. Briefly resumed sailing in 1934. Laid up thereafter. Scrapped in Scotland in 1938.


Vauban

Built by Workman, Clark & Company, Belfast, Northern Ireland, 1912. 10,660 gross tons; 511 (bp) feet long; 60 feet wide. Steam quadruple expansion engines, twin screw.  Service speed 13.5 knots.  540 passengers (210 first class, 130 second class, 200 third class).

Built for Lamport & Holt Line, British flag, in 1912 and named Vauban. New York-South American service service. Transferred to Royal Mail Lines, British flag, in 1913 and renamed Alcala. Returned to Lamport & Holt Line, British flag, in 1913 and reverted to Vauban. New York-South American service. Chartered by Royal Mail Lines, British flag, in 1922. Hamburg-New York service. Scrapped in Scotland in 1932.


Veendam

Built by Harlan & Wolff Limited, Govan, Scotland, 1923. 15,450 gross tons; 579 (bp) feet long; 67 feet wide. Steam turbine engines, twin screw.  Service speed 15 knots.  

Built for Hamburg-American Line, German flag, in 1923 and named Veendam. Rotterdam-New York service. Damaged by fire during the German invasion of Holland in May 1940. Broken up at Baltimore in 1953.


Venezuela

Built by Officine e Cantieri Liguri-Anconetani, Ancona, Italy, 1905. 5,026 gross tons; 394 (bp) feet long; 47 feet wide. Steam triple expansion engines, twin screw.  Service speed 14 ? knots.  1,108 passengers (58 first class, 56 second class, 994 third class).

Built for La Veloce Line, in 1905 and named Brasile. Italy-New York service. Sold to French Line, French flag, in 1912 and renamed Venezuela. Ran aground and later sank at Casablanca in 1920.


Verdi

Built by Workman, Clark & Co., Belfast, Ireland, 1907. 7,120 gross tons; 430 (bp) feet long; 53 feet wide. Steam triple expansion engines, twin screw.  Service speed 14 knots.  Two masts and one funnel.

Built for Lamport & Holt Line, British flag, in 1907 and named Verdi. New York-South American service. service. Sunk off Eagle Island on July 22, 1917.


Vestris

Built by Workman, Clark & Company, Belfast, Northern Ireland, 1912. 10,494 gross tons; 511 (bp) feet long; 60 feet wide. Steam triple expansion engines, twin screw.  Service speed 13.5 knots.  610 passengers (280 first class, 130 second class, 200 third class).

Built for Lamport & Holt Line, British flag, in 1912 and named Vestris. New York-South America service. Chartered by Cunard Line, British flag, in 1919. Liverpool-New York service. Chartered by Royal Mail Lines, British flag, in 1922. Hamburg-New York service. Returned to Lamport & Holt Line, British flag, in 1922. South American service. Foundered in a storm off Virginia on October 12, 1928.


Victoria Luise

Built by A/G Vulcan Shipyard, Stettin, Germany, 1900. 16,502 gross tons; 684 (bp) feet long; 67 feet wide. Steam quadruple expansion engines, twin screw.  Service speed 22 knots.  2,050 passengers (450 first class, 300 second class, 1,300 third class). Four funnels set in pairs, two masts.

Built for Hamburg-American Line, German flag, in 1900 and named Deutschland. World’s fastest passenger ship 1900-06. Renamed Victoria Luise in 1910. All-first class cruise ship service. Rebuilt in 1910-11. Unused in Germany during World War I. Renamed Hansa in 1921. Scrapped in 1925.


Vigilancia

Built by Delaware River Co., Chester, Pennsylvania, 1890. 4,115 gross tons; 321 (bp) feet long; 45 feet wide. Steam triple expansion engine, single screw.  Service speed 14.5 knots.  

Built for New York & Cuba Mail Steamship Co., in 1890 and named Vigilancia. Mexico, Cuba and Bahamas to New York 1892 to 1915 service. Two masts, two funnels, sister ship SEGURANCA. Torpedoed and sunk by German submarine on February 16, 1917.


Voltaire

Built by D. & W. Henderson & Company, Glasgow, Scotland, 1907. 8,406 gross tons; 485 (bp) feet long; 58 feet wide. Steam triple expansion engine, single screw.  Service speed 15 knots.  

Built for Lamport & Holt Line, British flag, in 1907 and named Voltaire. Liverpool to Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires to New York service. One funnel, two masts. Sunk by the German raider MOEWE while 650 miles w of Fastnet on November 2, 1916.


Volturno

Built by Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Company, Glasgow, Scotland, 1906. 3,602 gross tons; 340 (bp) feet long; 43 feet wide. Steam triple expansion engines, twin screw.  Service speed 14 knots.  1,024 passengers (24 first class, 1,000 third class).

Built for New York & Continental Line, British flag, in 1906 and named Volturno. Built for New York & Continental Line, British flag. Sold to Uranium Line, British flag, in 1910. Destroyed by fire in the North Atlantic on September 9, 1913.
