Dear Mrs. Dickinson:

We are happy to be of further help in your research. We appreciate your contribution to the Historical office. The last address we find given for J. L. Phillips Is Rhinelander, Wisconsin which seems to be in The Northern District of which Chetek is the Center. I will mention two other Phillips I find mentioned, as well as the information I found on J. S.Phillips. In 1901, an E. S. Phillips was listed as a lay delegate, in The Nebraska Conference. From 1897 To 1900, an L. M. Phillips is listed as a minister in the West Iowa Conference. In 1900 he located at his own request. You mention in your letter that J. L. Phillips moved quite often. This was the rule rather than the exception in those days. You will see this in the life of J. S. Phillips as well. J. S. Phillips was ordained elder in 1884 in the Dakota Conference. in the history of the church, he is listed as a charter member of that conference when it was organized at Providence, Dakota, on September 19, 1883. In 1886, he was on the committee to study the opening of a school at Wessington Springs, South Dakota.  A later relative, Clara Grace OSGOOD, attended this school about 1925.

Here are a list of his appointments:

  • 1888 - Mitchell, MT. Vernon, Parkston and Providence.
  • 1889 - Mitchell and MT. Vernon.
  • 1890 - transferred to West Iowa. appointed to Omaha. (he is listed on the 1890 veteran's census as living in Omaha, Nebraska.)
  • 1891 - Clarinda and College Springs.
  • 1892 - Shenandoah.
  • 1893 - transferred to Southern California. appointed to Los Angeles.
  • 1894 - District chairman of the Arizona district and appointed to Phoenix.
  • 1895 - Pasadena and Lamando Park.
  • 1896 - transferred to West Iowa. appointed to Clarinda.
  • 1897 - College Springs and Pleasant Hill.

Joseph retired in 1899.

sincerely yours, Mrs. Arline Clyde'

The obituary of Mary Ellen Mack Phillips, daughter of Rev. Levi M. Mack: She was born May 3 1831. She departed this life at Hot Springs, South Dakota, May 25, 1909. She was married to Rev.Joseph S. Phillips in the Sailor's Bethel Church at Buffalo, New York, (Presbyterian at the time of the marriage.) by the Rev. Griffith, July 17, 1853. Lovingly and loyally side by side, they fought the battles of life for 56 years and 22 days. From her childhood she was an earnest, devoted Christian and never failed or faltered in the path of duty. modest and retiring, she desired to be remembered only by what she had done. Truly a mother of Israel has left us. Her last days were made happy and pleasant by the presence of the lord and the kindly ministrations of friends who knew and loved her. Her remains were laid to rest in the beautiful Woodlawn Cemetery at Sioux Falls, feeling that she is not dead but sleeping. May those who so kindly ministered to us in the hour of bereavement lack no kindly voice to cheer and comfort them at the close of life.  J.S.P. (Joseph Stone PHILLIPS - Hot Springs Weekly Star Friday, June 11, 1909).

A search was made for an obituary on Joseph Phillips in the Hot Springs newspaper but the relevant copies are not on file. Joseph Phillips was living at the soldier's home in Hot Springs, South Dakota. The home has a file on him that has many interesting documents. At the time that Joseph Phillips lived here, there were small cottages about the grounds of the state veterans home. the veterans were kept on register, and if they kept a wife with them, they were not on roll, and registered, so therefore, we have no record of Mary Ellen. We do note on the application for admission, Mary E. Phillips, wife was mentioned as next of kin, and there is a line drawn through her name, and son C. L. Phillips of 802 first Ave 5, Sioux Falls, South Dakota was written in....'--State Veterans Home, Hot Springs South Dakota. 57747.'

The Reverend  Lester Mack or Morton. Phillips found that with such a large family  it was necessary for him to supplement his preachers salary by working in  the lumber mills which he did in Bellingham, Sedro Wooley, Springfield, and  Wendling. When he moved to Trail he was employed by the U. S. Fish Hatchery  located at the confluence of Elk Creek and the Rouge River.  This is a  small creek on the Rouge River. T was located at the confluence of the Rouge and k. Elk Creek for the dispute over the construction of a Dam opposed by various conservation groups. The hatchery is  no longer there and the area has been turned into a campground. He took up  a home stead just across the Crater Lake highway from the hatchery. This is  where Georgia passed on the victim of diabetes in 1931. A few years later  he remarried ?. After he retired he returned his homestead to the State of  Oregon for a small monthly pension. He came back to His son's place on  Henderson Ave where he built a small House. When he and his second wife  could no longer take care of themselves, she returned to her family in  Louisiana and he went to live with his daughter, Bernice in Gladstone. He  passed on there in the early 60's at around 93 years of age.   That is about all I know of my Grandfather that you don't already  know.   After Reverend  Lester M. Phillips retired, in Springfield, he was the pastor of the Free Methodist Church in  Glenwood or what is now called West Springfield on old highway 99 between  Eugene and Springfield.
