GENERATION NO. 7

130. Torsten Olsen Arvoll, Bjelde, Vemundvig   (Ola6, Häakon5, (Hakonson)4, Häakon3, .Jon2, Johannes1
He was born 10 June 1821 in Avoll (Arval/Ervoll - same place), Sogndal, Norway.  Torsten died 21 November 1876 in Tronaesmoen, N. Trondelag Norway, at the age of 55.  He was buried in Vemundvik u. Namsos.

He married (1) Marie ESPENSDATTER 22 April 1846 in Sogndal, Norway.

Marie was the daughter of Espen JOHANNESSEN and Gjertrud PEDERSDATTERMarie  died 15 June 1870 in Tronaesmoen, Norway, at the age of 49.

From Berit Selseng <berits@sffarkiv.no>

Torstein Olsen bought Bjelle 1863 from Vilhelm Magnus Rosendal, a stranger in Sogndal, and sold it 1870 to a couple from Jostedal in Sogn, also strangers.
He had rented the farm to others some of the years, one half to his brother Andreas who got a daughter, Karen Andrea, at Bjelle 1866. A sister in law, GitlAugust Espend. with husband Nils Johannesen Eskestrand also had a part of Bjelle, they had a son, Ivar, there in 1865.

All these moved out, Bjelle was only a short stop in Torstein's life.

The name Kattevold comes from Valdres in the east of Norway, and was brought to Sogndal with people
moving here. It is used as a family name, and as such is no geographical name

Torsten Olson - Norway, my great grandfather

Torsten Olson's second wife, Dorte Iversdatter Kvale - Norway
Farmer, head of household, owner-1865 census- Born on father's farm at Avoll (Arval/Ervoll - same place). The family stayed only a few years at Bjelde. Tosten Olsen was born at Avoll (Arval/Ervoll - same place) and lived most of his time in Sogndal at that place and in Sogndalsfjora near by. He owned Bjelle (correct name!) for seven years ( 1863 -70) and lived elsewhere also some of that period, with others to rule the farm. In 1865 he was living at Bjelle. There are two areas with this name: Bjedle in Aurland parish, which is NOT ours, and Bjelle parish in Sogndal, whish is oursTosten Olsen moved to Vemundvik in Namdalen in Trxndelag. One daughter, Ragnhild Sofie, was married in Sogndal 1871 and lived there for some years, then moved to the east of Norway. There are no descendants in Sogndal of Tosten Olsen. Together with Tosten and his family moved a family from Kvele in Sogndal: Ivar Berdsen b. 1814 and wife Berta Johannesd. with many children. Their eldest daughter, Dorte b. 1835, was later married to Tosten Olsen, she might be the mother of Per/Peter who must be born at Vemundvik.

News article: 21,600 stitches. My note on the alterations to the Mostert Mill house on Rhodes Drive brought Mr. M.B. Torstenson to see me (Some of you will remember Mr. Torstenson as science master at the Cape Town High School.) Mr. Torstenson was trained as an architect. When he arrived in Cape Town 58 years ago he made drawings and photographs of the fine old buildings that appealed to him. Among them was the Mostert Mill house. From his sketch and graph of the mill house the late Mrs. Torstenson embroidered the tapestry seen in my photograph today. It took 21,600 stitches to complete a remarkable work of art

Grandma's house as remembered by granddaughter Laurine Mitchell

She kept lavender in her dresser drawers. She always smelled like lavender. When I was in high school I went to their home and washed down the kitchen walls after school as they were so greasy with the kind of gas that was used in the kitchen stove. She was so clean that the dirty wall bothered her, so I told her that I would wash them.  It took me several days and when I was finished ,she had me take money from her dresser drawer and go to the store and buy some pop and ice cream s o we could have a soda. But don't tell Grandpa as she wasn't suppose to have any money.  He was working as a night watchman at Fisherman's  Wharf, so he wasn't home.  Their basement was as clean as a whistle, and she had an oil burning hot plate with a copper boiler on top to boil the clothes.  She used blueing for the white clothes and she used a boiled starch to make the clothes stiff before ironing.  Those were the only smells that I recall. I'm not sure but I think she used ivory soap to clean the clothes on the washboard.
