Julius MILLER

He married Lena
(Helena) Miller 27 Apr 1898 in Freeman,
South Dakota. She was born 7 June 1878 in Freeman,
South Dakota. She was the daughter of Jacob
Miller and Maria
SCHRAG . Julius died
17 August 1953 in Freeman, South Dakota, at the age of 75.
Julius and Helena homesteaded in
Freeman, South Dakota. An interesting story was told of
the time Julius drove his first car into his
yard. He was unsure on how to stop it so he did what he
knew best. He drove it into the barn yelling "whoa." I
understand it eventually stopped. |

August J
Miller
(Julius10
,Jacob9, Johann8,
Johann7, Heinrich6,
Jacob5, Hans4,Hans3,
Rudolph2, Hans1) was born
7 May 1899 in Freeman, South Dakota. He married Clara
Grace OSGOOD 2 June 1929 in Freeman, South
Dakota. She was born 30 June 1905 in Osage City,
Kansas. August followed a busy work life around the
Midwest. Starting with working in the meat shop with his
brothers and father in Freeman, South Dakota, growing
up, some of his subsequent jobs included being in
Fort Dodge, Iowa from about 1939-1942 where he worked
for a Laconza (spelling?) Packing Company, followed by
the Tobin Meat Company. In about 1944-1945 he was in
Norfolk, Nebraska at the Roman Packing company and by
1946 in Cairo, Nebraska where he owned a grocery store. By 1947 he
was in Mitchell, Nebraska where he managed a grocery
store for another. After that he was in Lyman, Nebraska
where he owned his own grocery store. By 1955 he was
in Sidney, Nebraska working in a meat packing house. Then
to Minneapolis, Seattle and South Dakota, where they stayed for
a time in Red Canyon, the house built by Duane and
Karen in the 1960's, then they were back to
Seattle.
Clara died 11 February 1975 in Stanwood,
Washington, at the age of 69.
August died September 1981 in Poulsbo,
Washington, at the age of 82, and was buried in Stanwood,
Washington.
Clara often quoted to her son
Duane: "Freeze belly like ice wagon and
die sneezin'." or "Why don't you put a quarter in your
shoe and just go."
In order for her to get a Social
Security number, she had to get a letter from her oldest
sister to verify Clara was her sister and that Clara was
born in 1905.
Clara's father, in the newspaper
business, often challenged the family to find a word in the
dictionary that he could not spell. Although they tried,
they also could not. |

New York harbor was reached on May 18,
1874. Schrag and Christian Mueller sent this
message to Schutt the following day, May 19"
"I heartily rejoice to be able to inform you that we
arrived in New York yesterday at 5:00 o'clock and are
all in the enjoyment of good health. The voyage was
pleasant, although during the first few days most of us
suffered from seasickness. Soon after our ship
anchored Bro. Warkentin came on board and took us in
charge. We have no complaints to make. We were
well treated, but our chests were injured considerable by
being pitched from side to side by the roughness of the
sea. With the exchanging of money Bro. Warkington
rendered us every assistance... We took out tickets direct to
Yankton and at four o'clock this afternoon we were to embark
for the west and by Saturday evening are to be in
Yankton. If any more of our people come, please have
them take gold drafts the same as we did . and only get in
Hamburg as much as in greenbacks as they need on the
voyage. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
