| | 12152 | F | | Annie Anna Marie HOFFMAN (John2, Peter1) was born 8 March 1869 in Hokah, Minnesota. She was the daughter of John Hannes ? HOFFMAN and Mary Elizabeth DENSCH. Anna died 20 October 1932 in Little Falls, Minnesota, at the age of 63. | | | | | | | | Additional information about Anna: She married Christian Henry. GREST 22 November 1887 in Pierz, Minnesota. He was born 1855 perhaps in Zizers, Switzerland and died in July 22, 1942/1947 in Morrison County. He was the son of Christian GREST (1822- 1871) and Eve Battagira ( -1869). Christian was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Monticello, Minnesota. Christian, born 1822 was the son of Christian GREST, born 1782 and Zedo Gotz. They had six children. Christian born 1782 was the son of Christian GREST born 1745 and Barbara Morin. Christian, born 1745, was the son of Jos GREST, born 1702 and Marie Elizabeth CASTELLI. Jos was the son of Benedict GREST, born 1680 and Anne MARIN. Jos, born 1680, was the son of Jos GREST and Dorthea Falardin. Chirstian was 14 days olds when he came to the US April 21, 1855., He was born in Zizers, Switzerland in 1855, probably in April Christian and Eva arrived in the New York on 7 June 1855. They came on a ship named Switzerlandappropriately enough and their country of origin was Switzerland. Our ancestor Christian was age 34 with the occupation of farmer, and Eva was age 31. The source of the immigration from Switzerlandis a book Germans in America, 1850-1874. There were three other people named Grest on the same ship at the same time: Christ. Grest, age 26, male; Eva Grest, age 7, female; and Margaret, age 3, female. The ages of the other Grests are incorrect in this book. Based on the passport they should be Christian Grest age 37, Eva Battaglia (no age listed), two children, Eva 7 years, Christian 14 days, and Christians sister Margr. Grest 30 years.
I ( Wendy Douglas - John Douglas <wdouglas@lakedalelink.net> am still living on the farm where Henry Wiegand and Elizabeth Grest once lived in Minnesota. I also have a photograph of Christian Grest (the son), if you are interested I can scan and send it to you.

In the morning the pin and the money were gone. Her grandson John GREST and her daughter-in-law Lila GREST insisted Anne was born in Virginia in a town that started with the letter R, perhaps Richmond. But the Minnesota Church Record states otherwise. She died of diabetes. She had dropped a kitchen knife on her toe which did not heal. She and her husband had nine children. Additional information about Christian H, born 1887: He was once deputy Sheriff of Little Falls, Minnesota 1910-11. He was known as Black GREST as he had black hair and a bad temper. He never carried a gun but he was feared. He dealt in windmills and well digging in Rich Prairie and Pierz, Minnesota before he was Sheriff around the turn of the century. He drove a team of oxen carrying freight when he was young. He drove a team of oxen when he was eight years old during the Indian uprising helping to build a palisade around the town of Monticello for which he applied for a pension but never got. | | | Additional information about Peter: He may have been raised German-Lutheran, although I have received information from Catholic churches on his father. He did not have a middle name. According to him, he lived near his grandmother (Eva STEPPE) and he often walked her back to her house. She was blind. He would approach a ditch and tell her to jump. He was full of stories. He would tease his sisters, one of which threw a hot spoonful of squash at him. The family lived in Harlowtown, Montana. Once when he was off working, the creek flooded to the rooftops. Josephine had to rescue the kids. In 1907 he was in Grand Forks, North Dakota; 1909 he was in Great Falls, Montana, by November 1915 in Lewistown where he was hit and hurt by a car. The newspaper clipping states that at 4:00 pm a Ford Car, driven by a Miss Bean, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Bean, swept around in a half circle at the Empire bank corner intersection of Main street and Fourth avenue and caught Mr. Hoffman, who was chatting with a friend, carrying him swiftly against the brick wall of the building and crushing him terribly.... Mr. Hoffman was totally unaware of his danger, his back being to the car, until the swiftly moving auto struck him, the guard bending him over. Instantly, he was carried in front of the car as it struck the iron post supporting the iron railing around the entrance of the Empire barber shop. This did not seem to check the car at all, the post being snapped off while the auto jumped forward a couple of feet until it struck the wall of the building. . . . A Mr. Jeff Sherman and others immediately took the injured man out. Hoffman was unconscious, bleeding from numerous cuts and was quickly carried upstairs to the office of Dr. Attix, who found a fracture of the knee, with several bad cuts about the head and body. The pressure exerted when the car struck the building came largely upon the chest, and this Hoffman withstood in a rather remarkable way, his structure evidently being a powerful one, He was given emergency treatment and soon recovered consciousness, being taken then to St. Joseph's hospital. . . . Hoffman's home is at Roundup, although he had been residing here for a time, being employed at the local yards. he is married. Many years ago I heard the story that Peter was the one who took the first steam or diesel train over the Rocky Mountains. If that was so he must have done is before 1915 as that is when he was hit by a car and lost his leg. I have never been able to verify this story. From 1918-1940 he lived at 8613 30th ave SW in Seattle, Washington. He moved to my mother, Laura Hoffman's, house where he died the day after Mother's day. He was a locomotive engineer, a Milwaukee Switch Engineer. With the inheritance he left Mom, she bought her blue rug and dining room set. He married Josie Emma Josephine DUMONT about 1908 perhaps in Montana or North Dakota. She was born 17 January 1890 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She was the daughter of George Joseph Stanislas DUMONT and Lena Emma Magdalena OZIAS. Josie died 24 May 1933 in Seattle, Washington, at the age of 43, and was buried in Calvary Cemetery. | | | | | | | F | Additional information about Emma: She was a prize dancer who took many prizes with her brother George, Jr. She went to work at the age of 12, baby sitting and helping about the house. They lived at Great Falls, Lewistown and Harlowtown, Montana until perhaps the early 1920's. They spent some time in California before coming to Seattle, Washington. Later she became an expert saleslady in high priced dresses at Frederick and Nelson's in Seattle. Customer's were governor's wives and senator's wives and the elite of Seattle. She excelled at whatever she undertook. Before marriage she was an expert packer at Sunshine Biscuit Co, and an expert chocolate dipper for a candy company. They lived at 8613 30th ave SW, Seattle, Washington | | | | |

Our Sister served Delta Chapter with much pride and dignity as Sister Ruth in 1946, Sister Chaplain in 1948, was elected Associate Conductress in 1949, Conductress in 1950, Associate Matron in 1951, and Worthy Matron, with her husband, LeRoy, as Worthy Patron in 1952. Our Sister was the oldest Past Matron in the line of service at the time of her death.
Arleine was a housewife and a dedicated wife and mother to their two boys, Robert and Douglas. The family enjoyed living at Lake McDonald in Washington for many years. When Roy, as we all called him, retired, they sold all their belongings and traveled extensively throughout the United States in their recreation vehicle.
After Roy suffered a stroke in 1980, they moved into a mobile home in Puyallup and then to Rio Verde Mobile Estates in Auburn a coupe years later. Arleine was a dedicated caregiver for ten years until Roy passed away August 23, 1990.
Sister Arleine had numerous health problems but never complained. When she no longer felt it was safe for her to drive, she sold her car and mobile home and moved to the Evergreen Retirement Home in Renton, where she was very contented.
Our Sister was a very friendly, gracious and courageous lady, who enjoyed her family and friends. As her health failed, so did her eyesight and her activities became more limited. While Arleine had not been able to attend Chapter for some time, she was always interested in what was going on at Delta and would always say, "What is new at Chapter?" She kept in contact with her friends by telephone and that too had become more difficult. There were no services. Memorials can be made to the Heart Fund. | | | | | | | | | | We think of Arleine in happy days When we were all together, Her loving smile and friendly ways Will live in our hearts forever. |
| | | | The members of Delta Chapter share in their loss and extend sincere and loving sympathy to our Sister's two sons, Robert and Douglas, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. NOW BE IT RESOLVED, that the Chapter Charter be draped in loving memory of our departed Sister, Arleine Hoffman, a copy of these Resolutions be sent to the family, and a copy be spread upon the Minutes of this Meeting.
