By 1730 FOLLETT and JACKSON were trading from Topsham to Trepassy, NFLD.

  • 1741-44 John FOLLETT and family moved to Topsham, possibly dictated by business, but also possibly  because of the arrival in Topsham of Presbyterian Minister, Rev Aaron Pitts.
  • 1749 John FOLLETT acquired some dwellings in White St. "for ever."
  • 1754 Probably he was the John FOLLETT who petitioned the Privy Council for leave for William Jackson, Merchant of Topsham to export to Newfoundland on the ship "George", Samuel HOOK, master; espite an embargo?

John FOLLETT and family were all Dissenters.

John married Mary FORWARD 5 Jan 1724/1725 in Sidmouth, Devon, England. Mary was born 28 Mar 1706 in Sidmouth, Devon, England. She died 1771.

      2 F Sarah FOLLETT (John1) was born about 1727 in Sidmouth, Devon, England. She was christened 9 Nov 1727 in the Parish Church, Sidmouth, Devon, England. Sarah  died Jul 1815 in Topsham, Devon and was buried 12 Jul 1815 in St, Margaret, Topsham, Devon, England.  
 
1747 At marriage, by Licence, Sarah described as "of Topsham"Portrait of her owned by Michael Landon  Hill of Chiddingleyfold, Sussex .  
 
22 Nov 1815 Mrs Sarah PENNELL. A conveyance from her to John LOCK. Lovell PENNELL of Lyme Regis Gent & William PENNELL now in the Brazils, John LOCK and a Richard LEWIN Esquire the younger, late of Greenwich, Kent, now of 14 Bow Lane Cheapside, London, the surviving executor of Richard PENNELL, formerly of Mount Ebford in the parish of Woodbury, one-time the Capt of the "Hawke" HEIC  dcsd, and John POPE of Topsham. This was a message, being tenement dwelling house, garden & hereditaments,  in Chapel Place, Topsham which the Pennells sold to John LOCK for £220, possibly just after Sarah's death.  
 
Sarah's will lost in fire at Exeter, Devon Estate Duty Copy exits.  A waterfront St in Topsham was named after the FOLLETTE as was Folletts Lodge  

Notes for LOVELL PENNELL:  

By 1730s Follett & Jackson represented merchant firms that traded from Topsham and were established at Trepassy. Joined by (Lovell & other) Pennells 1750-1760s. Thrived until demise of fishing bank in 1790s. By end of Napoleonic Wars connections between Topsham & Trepassy were severed.

1744 LP Mariner, Commander of the "Exmouth" a privateer, 50 tons, 6 carriage guns & 10 swivel guns, 70 men. Victualled  in 1744. 1747 Lovell transcribed as Flavell in IGI at marriage to Sarah Some of LP & SF's children were baptized at the Presbyterian Chapel, Topsham 1752  LP Captain  of the "Mary" 1752 and the "Mediterranean" 

1754 sailing to to  Lisbon and Genoa.  Entered in the Bale Books Exeter RO. Later a merchant & ship owner of Topsham, leaving his Newfoundland business to his sons Daniel & John? 1

775 List of importers of fish oil mentions, Lovell PINNELL of Topsham. Topsham Waterfront Museum  

1776 29 Jan  LP selling brig "Fortune" in a Yeovil local newspaper. 1789 A Lovell Pennell of Pennell & Co. (His son Lovell?) . Lovell & Sarah P left Wills. LP Exeter? or Estate Duty only?  

1794  (Daniel & John died at sea returning from Newfoundland 1794)

John FOLLETT  merchant of White St. Topsham, trading to Trepassey, Newfoundland. 1796 John FOLLETT  closed his business to avoid bankruptcy due to actions by French privateers.  Called John Jnr at children's baptisms  

1785 A John FOLLETT of the Middle Temple paid £56 to Samuel WHITE brother & heir of Henry WHITE dcsd to grant & release the dwelling house, cellar & all appurtenances called Gatehouse or Sweetland tenement at the entrance to White St Topsham. John later pulled this down and converted part of the land into a small garden & the rest into a cellar with lofts over.  1798  John FOLLETT 's Amons Copy at Exeter RO John married Ann TUCKER or FOLLETT 8 Jan 1762 in Lyme Regis, Dorset, England.

He was a Mariner.     Isaac emigrated to Newfoundland. Doubtless employed in family business in fish trade.

Witnesses at marriage John Robins and Catherine. Mary Pennell a witness at their marriage.  He was a mariner of Sidmouth   Florence died at her house on the Strand. 3 January 1837  Topsham, Devon, England. She was buried 1837 in St Margaret, Topsham, Devon, England.
