John William "Buddy" NICOLINE was born on 1 Oct 1920 in Lima, Allen, OH.⁽¹⁸⁵⁾ He died on 8 Jan 1946 in , Japan.⁽¹⁸⁶⁾⁽¹⁸⁷⁾ "Buddie" died of Smallpox.
Dates given to me by Tina Hursh. He was buried in Lima, Allen, OH.⁽¹⁸⁸⁾ John survived WWII, but had been left in Japan to help with the cleanup work. The married men had already been shipped home, and since John was single, he had to stay abroad. It was during this time that he contracted Smallpox and died. John's family had to fight the government to be allowed to bring his body back for burial. The government did not want his body taken back to the States because he died of Smallpox. They finally relented, but unfortunately his father had died a few weeks before this happened, and never knew that his son was brought back. Died of smallpox while in service in Japan 25 years old at time of death Burried Gethsemane Cemetary Parents: John Edward NICOLINE and Pauline GILLHAM.

Lucia NICOLINE⁽¹⁸⁹⁾ was born about 1883 in Italy.⁽¹⁹⁰⁾ It is probable that this daughter is Lucia (age3) that traveled to the US with Antionetta Grippa, and arriving in NY 14 June 1886, aboard the ship Gergovia that sailed from Naples.
According to mother (Betty Pauline), There was a sister in this family that was killed as a child with a slingshot, but that is all I know of her. Parents: Michele NICOLINE(I) and Marie Antonetta GRIPPA.

Reverend Robert Hudgins performing the ceremony. Patricia Lou, the youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Matt Nicoline, was given in marriage by her brother, Bud, the bridesmaid was Sister Betty Klopshinske. Marilyn Lay and Beverly Davis were bridesmaids. Ray Bushrow was best man and Bennett Dugan was noted as Usher. The Groom is attending Michigan State Normal College, following service in the United States Army, and the bride is employed at the Romulus High School. "Pat" is a Romulus High graduate of'47, and "Spud" of the class of '46. Children were: Pamela Jean SCHULTZ, Brian Lee SCHULTZ, Gary Allen SCHULTZ.

Pauline Betty NICOLINE⁽²⁰⁶⁾ resided 1015 S. Atlantic, Lima Ohio in 1916 in Lima, Allen, OH.⁽²⁰⁷⁾ She was born on 4 Oct 1916 in Lima, Allen, OH.⁽²⁰⁸⁾⁽²⁰⁹⁾⁽²¹⁰⁾ Betty's original birth certificate notes that she was born at 5:50 AM. It also notes her name as Pauline Nicholine(sic). The birth certificate was corrected in 1971 by an affidavit sworn to by sister Frances Wilson. The first name was corrected to Betty Pauline, and the H taken out of the misspelled Nicoline. She was baptized on 23 Apr 1933.⁽²¹¹⁾Was baptized by S. Schofield, Pastor, at age 16. She died on 14 Oct 1990 in Westland, Wayne, MI.⁽²¹²⁾⁽²¹³⁾ Cause of death is noted as Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease, by Y. Chung, MD., Asst. Medical Examiner for Wayne County, Michigan. ⁽²¹⁴⁾⁽²¹⁵⁾ Funeral services for Betty were performed by Rev. John Kershaw at Uht Memorial Funeral Home in Westland, Michigan. Betty was creamated, and her remains lie in the crypt at Cadillac Memorial Gardens, Westland, Michigan on 17 October 1991.
⁽²¹⁷⁾Mother loved to crochet as a pastime, and over the years made some beautiful items, including doilies and table runners and table cloths. Most all of these she gave away to friends and family. She also learned to knit, and made several beautiful colorful afghans. With an old treadle sewing machine, mother used to make lots of clothing for herself and us kids, and she made lots of doll clothes for Shirley and some of the Nieces or even for friends who had little girls with dolls. On 24 May 1971, Betty had her Birth Certificate corrected. Name recorded on BC was Pauline Nicholine, both first and last names were corrected to Betty Pauline Nicoline. Sister Frances swore to the affidavit. Parents: Americo "Mattie" NICOLINE and Alma SHOCKEY .

She was married to Winton Lynn (Wimpy) KLOPSHINSKE on 31 Dec 1938 in Auburn, Dekalb, IN.⁽²¹⁸⁾Winton and Betty's marriage licence was issued on 31 December 1938 in Dekalb County Indiana, and they were married on that same date by Claude Garrison, who I think was the local JP.
Our first family home was in Romulus, right over the back fence of gramma and grampa (Mattie & Alma), Nicoline. Although I do not remember living in the house, the family moved to Wayne when Shirley was expected, It was directly in back of Gramma and Grampa Nicoline's house. According to Carl and Art, it was small, having a Kitchen, living room, eating room, a bedroom, and another little room used as a wash area. It also had a small shed out in back for coal and scrap wood for starting fires in the little stove that was in the living room. There was no modern bathroom, but had an outhouse in the back, and bath's were taken in the old metal tub.Since grampa had done some carpentry work, the house was probably designed by him also. I am sure others assisted in the construction, including some of dad's brothers and mom's brother and grampa Nicoline. I can imagine mom and gramma, over the back fence, prepairing meals and drinks.
Shortly before Shirley was born, November 1943, we moved to Norene street in what was then just Nankin Township, a few blocks outside the town of Wayne, where both mother and dad continued living throughout there lifetime.
Occasionally, in the Spring, when Betty and Wint went to Lima to visit family living there, they brought back Mushrooms for everybody. I don't know if they went out to gather them, or they came from a farm. But Grampa Nicoline surely knew where they may be found, as he always went out in Romulus, along the railroad, to pick the Morel's.
As a family, I remember always going out on weekend's for a ride somewhere in the country to see the farms and little towns. Sometimes being away for the entire weekend, even going up north (in Michigan), and never taking a map. Just driving wherever the roads looked like it should be traveled.

Ruth Virginia NICOLINE⁽²¹⁹⁾ was born on 11 Jun 1910 in Lima, Allen, OH.⁽²²⁰⁾ She Graduated High School in 1929 in Adrian, Lenawee, MI.⁽²²¹⁾ ⁽²²²⁾ Being one of the top students in her 1929 High School graduating class in Adrian, Michigan, Ruth was called and offered a job as Secretary for a leading Attorney, who was later elected Judge. When he moved to Colorado, She went to work for the Credit Bureau. Then on to the Hudson Post Gazette in Hudson, Michigan. Out of there She worked as Editor of Onstead News, and wrote for another small paper. After moving to Romulus and marrying, she and Earl ran a local grocery store together until he passed away in 1957. Ruth contioued to run the store, with help of course, for nearly another 25 years.

Ruth notes that She attended High School in Lima, Ohio since there was no schools close to where the family lived in Holloway, Michigan. She spent two years living with Grandparents, Michele and Marie, and one year living with Aunt Bessie and Uncle Grover Hillyard. The family moved to Adrian so she could spend her final year there. When Alma applied for her Spouce's Annuity, when she turned 65, she noted her birth date as noted above, and place as near Waynesfield, Ohio.

Shockey and mother Frances Childs, were married by Geo. W. Hassenover, Mayor of Wapakoneta, Ohio. In the Lima City Directory for 1908-09 Mathew is noted with wife "Elma" and working as a machinist and living at 910 Second st.. 1911-12 has him and "Alma" back living at 506 W. Vine, while still a machinist. Subsequent directories has them at 958 (1050) Atlantic Ave through the 1919 directory.
Gramma and Grampa always had a huge garden in the lot between the house and the railroad tracks. Here they had corn and tomato's and beens and lots of other good things, including strawberries and raspberrys. Gramma also had a flower patch out there. There was a well in the garden with a hand pump, where after priming it with a can of water, you could pump all the water you wanted. In the basement, there was a big old wood (gas?) stove where gramma did her canning.
Every year on Christmas Eve, all of the family came to their house to have snacks and to exchange presents. We kids always got to open one of our presents over there so we could keep busy while the adults visited. After Gramma died in 1963, Grampa had to sell their home of so many years, as the expressway was going to put an off ramp right through their property. He moved a few blocks away to a small house where we continued the Christmas tradition of gathering there. Children were: Frances Antonetta NICOLINE, Ruth Virginia NICOLINE, Matthew "Bud" Jr NICOLINE , Helen Jessie NICOLINE, Pauline Betty NICOLINE, Patricia Lou NICOLINE.
