Index of Obituaries for Self Family Cemetery

INFO FROM BOOK 'PIONEER FAMILIES OF ANDERSON CO. TX. PRIOR TO 1900':

Ervin Self was born 23 October 1811, possibly in Illinois. He died
23 October 1892, and is buried in the Self Cemetery three miles south
of Palestine, Texas. He married Malinda Douthit, daughter of Evan and
Sarah McCullouch Douthit in Illinois. Malinda was born 2 Jan 1817 near
Nashville, Tennessee. She died 18 June 1913 and is buried in the Self
Cemetery. Ervin had lived in Illinois for a short time and came to
Polk County, Ark. He came to Texas to visit his inlaws and to see this
part of the country. He liked what he saw and went to bring his family
to Anderson County around 1843 on the James Douthit Survey on what is
called red land. Then he moved to the George Weeden Survey and in 1850
built a log house with two rooms 20x20. It had very small windows,
mostly peep holes, as there were still wild animals such as wildcats,
bears, and panthers. The house still stands today with improvements.
It is still liveable today. They had five children when they came to
Texas and the rest were born in Texas.
