Charles Christian

Services for Charles Christian, 76, of Montalba, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at
Montalba Baptist Church with the Rev. Rod Skelton officiating. Burial will follow
in Brushy Creek Cemetery under the direction of Bailey & Foster. Mr. Christian
died Sunday night at Spring Season Nursing Home in Elkhart. He was born Nov. 15, 1925,
in Texarkana, Ark. to S. "Vestor" and Margaret Hampton Christian. Mr. Christian was
reared in Brushy Creek. He attended school there and at Frankston High School where
he played football and was active in FFA. He attended Texas A&M and Sam Houston State
University where he obtained a degree in agriculture. Mr. Christian served in the U.S.
Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He earned several medals including the
Purple Heart. Mr. Christian's lived for 25 years. He owned a Sears store and was active
in the Lion's Club, Baptist church and other community activities. He retired from
Chevron before returning to East Texas. He was active at Montalba Baptist Church where
he went to Honduras on his 74th birthday with the Baptist Men's organization. He helped
rebuild houses after Hurricane Mitch in 1999. Mr. Christian was preceded in death by his
wife of 51 years, Betty Jean Christian. Mr. Christian is survived by sons, Charles Wade
Christian Jr. of Wimberly, Danny Christian of Onalaska and Robert H. Christian of Algona,
Iowa; brothers, John E. Christian of Palestine and Fred L. Christian of Shreveport, La.;
sisters, Clara "Totsy" Christian Linnard of Tyler and Mary Christian Moore of Palestine;
10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Mark Norman, Arvil
Patton, Brady Brownlow, Will Brownlow, Walter Dunavent and Don Blount. Visitation will be
from 6 to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday at the funeral home.
