After his mother's death in 1859 John Rowland was adopted by Dr. Smith

On the family grave at Botany cemetry, NSW Australia on his monumental headstone, the inscription known as the "Shilling Subscription", reads "FOR the People, BY the People and OF the People". Daceyville, NSW, Australia was named after him. He was a Labor Politician, and the NSW Colonial Treasurer.
