Notes for WILLIAM FREEMAN KNOWLES:
On Saturday 28th April 1906 William Knowles went to his enstanged wifes new home at 46 Church Street and found her about to leave for work, her children all dressed in the outdoor clothes to go with her. He was extremely agitated and the more Adele tried to calm him down and sen him away the more passionate and irrational he became. She urged him to move out to the verandah, away from earshot of the children, but he became louder and more violent in his manner until at last he drew out a revolver which he had hidden in his clothing. Adele was forced to acknowledge that he had the upper hand and she was terrified. She screamed and ran towards the street, desperate to draw him away from the children, but she could hear him running behind her. Before she could reach the roadway her seized her from behind, spun her around, squeezed the trigger and shot her down. At least three bullets hit her, one in the heart, and she was dead by the time anyone reached her.
His sentence was heard in the Palmerston North Court on June 6th 1906 He was sentenced to hang, but his sentence was almost immediately commuted to life imprisonment with hard labour and he was first held at Wellington then at Napier. It was to be many years before the Hadfield family heard of him again.
