Jane BACON
Jane was the daughter of a veterinary surgeon and horse dealer and was one of a family of six children. Her brothers were John, James and William, and her sisters were Fanny and Sarah. Jane was a preacher for many years in the Primitive Methodist Connection at the time of the great revivals in Methodism, and she always wore the Quaker bonnet and dress. In a memoir left by Emily Farley nee Herrick, she relates that Jane, George and their children would often visit their garden rented in Nottingham Park, and if it should be on a Sunday the children were not allowed to pick even a flower - so strict was Jane's attitude to the keeping of the Sabbath. Jane's parents were Joseph Bacon and Ann Dodson who were married at St Nicholas Church, Nottingham , 16 May 1796 Jane died at the age of 38 years in childbirth at Pear Street, Nottingham, the baby Joseph was buried with his mother. the following were inscribed on her tombstone in Nottingham. Sacred to the Memory of Jane Ratt [late Jane Bacon] who departed this life 20th March 1840, in the 39th year of her life. She was for many years a preacher in the Primitive Methodist Connection. This weary pilgrim travelled o'er this world's vast stage And now has ended Jane married George RATT, son of George RATT and Margaret MILLAR, on 22 Jan 1821 in Walesby,Nottinghamshire,England. (George RATT was born in 1800 in Hambleton,Rutlandshire,England, christened on 24 Apr 1800 in Hambleton,Rutlandshire,England and died on 31 Mar 1862 in Wakefield,Nelson,New Zealand.) |
