Walter was a bombardier in the Royal Artillery discharged in 1814 after twenty years of service to his country. In January of 1819 his first wife, also called Ann, was buried in Landulph.
In July 1831 it is Walter Gibbs who is shown to be the tenant of the Royal Oak, known then as Sambles, when it is included in an auctioneer's catalogue of land for sale.
24 - Fee-simple of a Public House, called Sambles, comprising Dwelling House, Out Offices and Gardens, occupied by Mr. Walter Gibbs, leased to himself for a term of 99 years, on three lives, aged respectively 20, 17 and 15 years; Heriot 1. 1s. 0d. - Conventionary Rent, 10s. 6d. per Annum.
