George Campbell is used to seeing blood at the meatpacking plant where he works, but not at home and not coming from his brother.
Donald Keith Campbell, 38, died Saturday morning at Nebraska Medical Center after suffering a stab wound to the chest.
The incident happened Friday afternoon. Omaha Police Sgt. Pamela Connely said Friday that Annette Stevens, a 32-year-old ex-girlfriend who lives at 2605 Woolworth Ave., was booked on suspicion of first-degree assault and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
George Campbell said his brother, who goes by his middle name, told him Stevens stabbed him at the back door of the house the brothers share with their mother at 2732 S. 12th St.
George Campbell said he was upstairs when he heard a knock at the back door shortly after 4 p.m. He then heard Stevens call out as she entered the back door. Her visit was not unusual, he said, because she and Keith have two children together.
"I heard her knock at the door when I was upstairs," George Campbell said, "Then she opened the door and was calling out his name 'Keith, Keith' without no bitterness or anything . . . just like nothing was wrong.
"A minute later he was running back in the house and saying 'She stabbed me, she stabbed me.'"
George Campbell, who works at the Ak-Sar-Ben Beef Co., rushed downstairs and called 911. He said Stevens had fled the scene. Police found her a short time later.
George Campbell tried to quiet and comfort his brother, who was running in and out of the house.
The Campbells' mother, Chris Bayer, rents the house, but was not home at the time of the incident. Keith Campbell and Stevens are the parents of two girls ages 7 and 4. The girls live with their mother.
"They hadn't even lived together for a few years," George Campbell said. "I didn't know of anything wrong."
Donald married Ann-Marie GUENOLE, daughter of Russell Thomas GUENOLE and Rachael May MARSH.
Donald next married Annette STEVENS.
