NZ Expeditionary Force Field Artillary. 2/443.When George was 20 years old WW1 broke out and he served for 5 years in the NZ Army. He travelled on troop ships to Gallipoli. First known rank - Driver. Embarkation Unit - Field Artillary on 16th Oct 1914 from Wellington aboard Limerick ar Arawa for Suez, Egypt.
George was with the company tending the horses but it was decided that the terrain was not suitable for the horses to be landed so he went to the Somme in France. He was awarded three war medals: 1914-15 Star awarded to British and Commonwealth Forces who served in any WW1 theatre up to the end of 1915. British War Medal 1914-1920. Allied Victory Medal 1914-1918.
During World War 1, women were encouraged to work in the munition factories and it was there that Rose became friendly with Molly, who was engaged to an engineer in the Australian Navy named Henry Dustin, George's eldest brother. Through this connection Rose met and fell in love with George. George was on leave in London when he met Rose Carter.
