FATAL FALL OF CLAY
MAN BURIED AT OPAWA - DIES ON WAY TO HOSPITAL
THE INQUEST
While working at Opawa yesterday in the brickyard of Messrs Cooksley Bros., a married man named George Cousins, aged thirty-five was killed by a fall of clay.
An inquest was held to-day before Mr H. W. Bishop, coroner.
Mr Flesher appeared for the widow
Henry Cooksley gave evidence that Cousins had been employed for over four years as a labourer. Yesterday, about 4.30pm he was undermining by himself for a fall of clay on a face not higher that 12 feet and 15 yards long, but perpendicular. He was accustomed to the work. Witness heard a rumbling noise and on looking round saw Cousins running and the clay falling.
A cloud of dust obscured everything then, and he ran to the assistance. Cousins, who was partly buried with his right shoulder and head out, was conscious, and called for help. He was unearthed, and although he could not get up did not seem to be seriously hurt.
He was taken towards the Hospital but died on the way.
When rescued there was not much earth on him but a big lump of two or three hundredweight (100-150kg) in front of him, and this possibly had struck him.
Cousins had a free hand in undermining and nobody superintended the work
Henry Vincent, brickmaker, who had assisted in extricating Cousins also gave evidence
Dr Steven, house surgeon at the Hospital, said that Cousins was dead when brought to the Hospital. He had died evidently from internal injuries
The Coroner recorded a verdict that death had resulted from injuries received in an accidental fall of earth at a brickyard
