Robert is mentioned as shoemaker living at a house called Providence (later Springfields) in Bishopwood On a map of 1843 the village was made up of about 30 well spaced cottages with areas of open unfenced common land between them .On the south side several acess lanes served the dwellings dotted along the Devon boundary .one went behind Providence an encroachment by Robert Mutter onto the common land c.1822 about the time of the sale of the man or of Taunton Deanne into private hands. 1831 Robert signed an apprenticeship agreement to take his daughter Maria as an apprentice .This allowed him to claim the parish rate of one pound for her as an apprentice. 1841 census Bishopswood Robert Mutter aged 50 shoemaker 1843 Tithe map Robert shown as owning Providence Place , garden and orchard 1844 named in his father's will inheritance of £100 1851 census cordwainer b.
