aged 81

Charles Exton of Malmesbury wrote a will that was proved on 23 June 1787. No wife was mentioned, so Charles was probably a widower. The will was signed on 28 January, 1779.

Charles named his son Thomas, his daughter Esther, the wife of John Handy, and his daughter Ann Neuth. Interestly, Charles essentially wrote Esther out of his will. She was given a legacy of one guinea, which suggests a token legacy to show that she had not been forgotten (a device to prevent Esther challenging the will during probate). Perhaps Esther had offended her father in some way, or perhaps he simply felt she was already well provided for, since John Handy was hardly a poor man.

The Malmesbury records do not have a suitable burial date for Charles, but there is a likely burial at Westport. A complicated Exton/Axton family monumental inscription has been recorded for Westport St. Mary's parish. It includes a Charles Axton who died 6 May 1787, aged 81 years. The Westport affiliation is supported by the marriage record for Hester Exton and John Lyne, where Hester was described as "of Westport".

Thomas inherited all of Charles' freehold & leasehold property at Westport - the phrasing suggests legal boilerplate as no specific property was mentioned. After the one guinea to Esther, the remainder of the estate was left equally to Thomas and Ann Neuth.

The family tree for this Exton family, created from the Westport monumental inscriptions and the entries in the Malmesbury parish records, is very provisional, and will require further examination of the Westport parish records and the Malmesbury monumental inscriptions. Before Charles and Ann, we can also take a guess that Charles was the son of another Charles and his wife, Joan. There is undoubtedly a link to Isaac Exton, malster of Westport, who died in 1744 - his family monumental inscription is likewise an extended list of people.2 SOUR S205 2 SOUR S199 2 SOUR S199
