George and family emigrated on 6 November 1841 from Liverpool, Lancashire, England travelling steerage class on the ship Martha Ridgway (621 tons) The ship struck Barret's Reef and had seven feet of water in her hold but fortunately they arrived safely in Port Nicholson, Wellington, New Zealand on 7 April 1842. There were twenty-one deaths, eleven caused by dysentary, and seven births, one of which was Jane Greathead born 26 December 1841 but sadly died before they arrived in New Zealand, She was buried at sea. The Martha Ridgway was later wrecked off Great Barrier Reef sometime around 11 August 1842.
