THE INQUEST. (By Telegraph.] From our Own Correspondent.) MASTERTON, THIS DATE. The evidence at the inquest on George Greathead, who died at Casterton on Thursday night, followed that he had two medicine bottles in his bedroom exactly alike, except that one contained linament for rheumatism, and was labelled "Poison," while the other contained two ounzes of rum. A candle was burning, but deceased accidentally helped himself to a tablespoonful of linament\emdash which consisted partly of belladona\emdash mixed it with some hop- bitters, and drank it off. Finding his mistake, he called for help. Various emetics were administered, and finally vomiting was produced, but deceased sank rapidly, and died three hours after swallowing the poison. Dr. Smith pronounced the cause of death to be shock to the system arising from fright, deceased being very frail, 72 years of age, and suffering from heart disease and rheumitism. A great gathering of Oddfellows is expected at his funeral to-morrow. He was buried on 20 September 1885 in Greytown Cemetery, Greytown, Wairarapa, New Zealand <pd1633.htm>, Block IX, plots 34-5 with his wife Dorothy.2,3,12 <e1062.htm> <e1062.htm> George married Dorothy TURNBULL, daughter of James Robert TURNBULL and Jane GARDENER, on 3 May 1835 in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne,Northumberland,England. (Dorothy TURNBULL was born circa 1807, died on 3 Jan 1885 in Carterton,Wairarapa,New Zealand and was buried in Greytown,Wairarapa,New Zealand.) |
